This was also back in the day when Redstone was pretty fresh and not a lot of people knew how the fuck it worked. It was so early in its release, that it still broke when you stepped on it. It also wasn't even called Redstone at this point, that came a little later on.

Neatly, no, it is not possible using only plates. However, if you imagine a 4x4 grid, the center of the grid being your entrance port, A and B being the the stones on the north side, C and D being the stones on the south side of this grid, you can place a door on the south edge of A and on the North edge of D with pressure plates on C and B. They actually trigger both doors at once to an open position that works going north or south through the doorway.

Also, keep in mind, this makes the doors slightly ajar in the closed position, and they open opposite direction, but they still mirror the correct open and closed positions needed to move through infinite times without going out of Sync. I have a tower with its base set up this way. Just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone who didn't really care about whether the doors are slightly ajar to begin with.

I can get double doors to open at the same time with 1 pressure plate and some redstone. I can also do the same with switches and a XNOR circuit.

Hopefully paired doors being opposite is a bug that will get squashed. :)

To get two doors to open with one pressure plate, you need to do some redstone work. You can also put a pressure plate in front of each door and wire them into an OR gate so either one (or both) will work.

i solved this porblem by putting doors in opposite directions and having 1 pressure plate. Doesnt look nice, but it forms a wall and is easy to get in/out

I say how to make this work, but it requires lots of redstone and space to work in. You have to make an inverter for one of the doors, just make the redstone go to one door, and branch off toward the other. Instead of making it go directly to the other door, place a block and a redstone torch. this makes the inverter, and will make the double doors operate on a single switch.
