She belonged, belonged to another-- Another forever.!!! As evening fell, a maiden stood At the edge of a wood. In her hands lay the reins Of a stallion. And ne'er I'd seen a girl as fair, Heard a gentler voice anywhere. Whispered, "Alas..." She belonged, belonged to another-- Another forever. Yes, she belonged to the twilight and mist.
I love this movie. I hate everthing about Susanna she's a triflin' ass bitch who's arrival almost destroyed these brothers. Only when shes dead and gone do they realize they care more for each other than she did.
I met Bradd Pitt during the filming of this film.... Didn't know who he was. I watched many scenes being filmed and was struck by the beauty and excellence of the sets in Gastown Vancouver.
This is a Canadian film. As much as it is American.
When i have children, if i have a son, im going to name him Tristan as well. Not just because of the movie, i just think its a beautiful name, I love it. Such a beautiful song too, it gives me chills. This is one of the best movies i have ever seen, its a shame more people havent seen it. Im 18 and most people my age have never even heard of it.
How strangely serene it is that fair maidens always belong to the twilight and mist...never really belonging, we all long to belong. But, as faith would have it: unfaithfulness if bliss.
I never understood what was up between Mr. & Mrs. Ludlow and why she just up and left (maybe that's explained in the book???). Whatever it was apparently the separation was mutual cause they were still friends.
This song is a summary of the film....Susannah belonged to neither Tristan nor Alfred, but to Samuel who had long gone through the twilight and mist (death)
@Polica40 hi, here's a 'better' explanation to your question...I was writing sort of quickly when I responded to you a few weeks ago--so now, I happen to be on this video, and notice you posted the question and someone answered you--read (if you'd like) my answer to 'nomorephones'--pretty much the same answer I gave you (because after all, it's my belief of why she cuts her hair), but maybe just better 'explained'...
@Polica40 well oi can tell you that in ancient tradtions cutting your hair is a sign of mourn... i can't assure you that that's what the director tried to say but it makes sense. it's also get you the understanding that she is about to do something radical...and then she kills herself...
@nomorephones Susannah cuts 'some' of her hair, because it will serve to 'remember who she was' for those who will want to remember her. The cut hair also represents the 'pure and unsoiled' part of her, before she blows her brain with the gun, and last, but not least, there's the symbolism that her torn hair resembles the inner turmoil she has endured for so long...
@emma473 i guess you are right, it does seem more logical, although i do know that act as an act of mourning and you can look it up in the bible for an example..
Twilight and Mist Music by James Horner Lyrrics by Brock Walsh As evening fell, a maiden stood At the edge of a wood. In her hands lay the reins Of a stallion. And ne'er I'd seen a girl as fair, Heard a gentler voice anywhere. Whispered, "Alas..." She belonged, belonged to another-- Another forever. Yes, she belonged to the twilight and mist.
it was and i live there and wish brad would come again. the last time he was in alberta was for the assassination of jesse james and i wanted to stalk out his hotel. my mother would not let me lol
I believe the movie took place in Montana. Anthony Hompkins plays a retired Colonel from the US Army. It was filmed in British Columbia. The three brothers enlisted in the Canadian Army before the US was involved in World War I which explains why they were wearing those Uniforms. Also if you remember in the film Alfred moves to Helena, which is in Montana.

I love this movie soooo much...and the name Samuel. Well my brother named his son Samuel. He loved it and took it from me. I also love my nephew for having such a great powerful name.

Thats a good reason for naming your son lol. Son, I named you after a character in a movie not your grandfather or someone great. Sorry, perhaps you can pretend that your as great as that character. LOL
If I have a son someday, I'll call him Samuel because of that movie! I decided that when I first saw the movie (I was like 12!). Thanks for uploading this extract!
@a520simba Samuel's death was the most tragic and hurting...I was 17 when i first watched this and I did cry over and over...He represents the unspoilt nature in man
Love the song, the music, the actors, the story, everything. One of my favourite movie. I wish I could live in that place. Unfortunately the ranch is not the same anymore, you hardly recognize it :(
@pampwdj :D I was going to name my first child Tristan, but I had a girl. If I ever have a son I am going to name him Tristan for sure also. Favorite movie of all time
God i wish i lived in those days. Everyone is just standing around watching him sing.. Fuckin awesome. God what a family, that is how family's used to be. I hate my life, damn.. I hate Technology :( I want that!!
No this is much different. It is what all family's made of it back then.. one person cant change it. This was before people stopped caring about their family, like today. :(
