Good to see that Iron Mike continued on with training the next generation of wrestlers. He had charisma which was underused in his national TV exposure.
@versacepower I don't remember what I picked, when they took out the music I put in myself, I just selected something instrumental that matched the length as closely as possible.
Wonder what ever happen to the bigblack guy in those videos. I know what happen he got left out of all the great stuff he did while training there. youtube his shit, well my shit
Had some great times at Iron Mike Sharpe's school when he was in Brick NJ. My friend from HS Dan Dubiel aka Johnny Handsome trained there in 1991 - 1992. He went on to wrestle for WWF but I lost track of what he did after WWF. Sharpe himself was a Class act and great person to meet. His students put on some great shows, better then whats on TV today. Glad to hear he's doing well after being ill for a while.
I remember Iron Mike Sharpe wrestling in the WWF and even at my hometown's fairgrounds during the fair. He was a real wrestler with some talent. Too bad the WWF never had much of a role for him besides a jobber. I remember the one time on WWF Superstars he got to wrestle Hulk Hogan and Hulk Hogan went through that whole Hulk-up routine for that match also. But it was always hard not to like Iron Mike regardless.
ahh i see..i remember the boxing gym. that front ring was rough..no give whatsoever, but that ring in the back was sweet...i wanted to join when sharpe and rumsby had the school in Brick, buit i was too embarassed.
My ex brother in law Larry built a ring and rented it out for shows with Toms dad ( executioner) not sure if he still does. did you ever go at night when sharpe wasnt there? i might have seen you. maybe not. then we would go to hooters after training.
I never trained unless Sharpe was there. Generally if he wasn't, we couldn't get in. There was a boxing school that ran for a few hours before Sharpe would get there, perhaps Ron had something worked out with them to get in. I didn't get close with Ron until two years after doing the initial show, I focused on training and worked for NWA. In 2000 he brought in a bunch of guys, threw Sharpe $100 and I trained them in the back ring. I started working for him again and continued til '05.
wow...the Rumsbys..my cousin is married to Tommy Thunder ( Tom Rumsby) him and his dad tried to open one themselves in the back of Gysers gym in beachwood. i tried training at sharpes with a childhood friend Kevin Glenn ( dr. hurtz) and Ron Post (reckless bullies). Sharpe wasnt there so they were training me for free. Ron said i was a natural, but i was used as a tackling dummy. wish the training was better i would have stuck with it. blew out my right elbow on a bad bump.. still hurts dammit!!
Sounds very similar to my experience with Ron and Kevin. I was 5'8" 175 when I started training in 97 and was the training dummy as well, but I was always there when Sharpe was there. I heard stories about Ron bringing in guys and training them before Sharpe arrived. Kevin told me I had the "it" factor and they booked me for a show the first night. I saw Kevin for the first time in years in Dec at a show I ran with Ron, but I have since severed ties with Ron. I did a show for Tom in April, 2007.
About 2 years or so ago he had some kidney trouble and was in the hospital in Canada. Apparently he is recovering well and has lost a lot of necessary weight. He looks pretty good.
Yeah I remember. It was actually a pretty good match from what I remember. I always thought you were really talented. I started training there when Rumsbys closed in 96. Do you have any old EWA shows on video by chance?
I have tons of clips on a website from mostly EWA, NWA and some from other companies. Any tapes I have are mostly just my matches. I borrowed about 35 tapes from JC Rage several years back to get a lot of content for an EWA page but I don't have them anymore. I'll PM you a link to the worker page.
I remember when he was in Mid South back in the early 80s. He wasnt always a jobber. He actually beat Killer Khan for the Louisiana title. Seemed that most of the former NWA wrestlers were treated like trash in the WWF and that was only because the NWA outshined the WWF.
$300 to sign up, when I joined it was only $100. That is unheard of today. After that it was $20 a week, whether you trained one or both days it was open.
Correct me if I'm wrong about any of the following...1) The building also housed a boxing program too during this time period, yes? 2) Were these the old convention hall wrings? Asbury Park had a very rich wrestling history, besides Bam Bam Bigellow coming from the area, Stu Heart often wrestled at the Armory and Convention Hall in the 1940's and 1950's. I also remember Hulk Hogan doing a house show at Convention Hall in the late 1980s...Too bad I didn't go!
The was a boxing school as well that usually finished up the day as we were coming in around 7PM. We stayed til generally 12 or 1AM at times. The ring behind Mike in the main area was a converted boxing ring which could have been in Convention Hall. The ring in the dome area was a "Lego" ring as I called it because it basically just snapped together with no bolts or anything. The guy who gave it to us said he got it from Randy Savage in Florida. I don't know if there's any truth to that.
It was a recognized school by indy promoters. You had to pay Sharpe basically and you were in. It was a fun place to be but pretty lax and inexpensive compared to most schools.
Cool video, where is iron mike now?

Iron Mike was great - he had all the moves and theatrics that made wrestling cool back in the day,

Chuck I don't know if we ever crossed paths there, I think you went before I did. We worked each other in a 4 way in EWA once back in 2001.
