Because I don't see the use if it. I never keep layers that i don't want to use afterwards. In this case it's fast and simple. No need to make thing more complicated than necessary. Masking is a great option, layer masking is overrated and something you learn at school.
I copied the eyeball, transformed it with with a vertical flip and made it half transparant with a gradient to 100% transparant (you can do this with a big soft eraser). Don't forget to make a shadow (horizontal motion blur and a gaussian blur) to give it more effect.

only problem i have with this tutorial is sometimes the moves you make are too fast. I had to pause and replay certain parts to see what you did.
