Direct drive heat generator would only work for winter use. Something else would have to be switched over to in hot weather to cool you off, or the half-year usage would halve the bottom line efficiency of the idea. Still, doubling one's winter heating efficiency by direct drive keeps nagging at my mind.

Another thought; a direct drive heat generator uses some kind of an oil-filled drum with rotating paddles in it. Running the vertical shaft directly to the drum paddles eliminates the electricity generating and heating gear, reportedly doubling the efficiency.
