My mom was overprotective in a strange way. She allowed me to stay home alone at 11/12, but I couldn't ride my bike past our street. I also was not allowed to walk the 1/4 mile to school by myself, but she would drive me home at 3 and leave me alone until 6. It made no sense whatsoever. Oh, we also lived in a GREAT neighborhood.
a 9 year old alone on the subway IS irresponsible......so is not letting an older child use a knife. Most of these parents are morons. Whatever happened to a happy medium. ffs
I was what they used to call a "latchkey kid". This craze for over protectiveness these days just puzzles me...I am so glad I don't have children of my own, for the simple reason that, by today's standards, it seems I would be considered neglectful at the very least! I have to give "props" to my parents for treating me like an intelligent being...They knew what I was capable of and they let me do it! They set boundaries, of course, but they managed to foster a feeling of sel-reliance in me too
Wat bout those parents come to Singapore and see how many 9-year olds walk home by themselves and see what happens when they are older and compare it to when u walk ur children everywhere all the time
i read a story a while ago about a mother in china letting her 3 year old go out alone, basically saying that the kid would have to learn how to be independent sometime, why not now. i've also had friends whose kid brothers at 8 or 9 were selling weed and cocaine. so she's definitely not the world's worst mom.

Yeah... sometimes we over-react when it comes to parenting. I thought this episode was going to be about child abusers. U_U
