@Semifastslim They were all donated :) We asked people to donate a specific type of car (USA trains 5 car articulated well car set) so we could make an attempt at the worlds longest model train, and they did. And the manufacturer (USA Trains) is sponsoring us because we are using only USA Trains equipment on the train. This is only a very small percentage of them.
Hmm. Yeah I know it's mostly all plastic; but something just makes me wanna say my one USA Trains car that i have is heavier than a pound or two; it's a "55 foot covered hopper" if I remember right.
Yes we have a set of those as well. They have a lot more to them than the well cars and are going to weigh quite a bit more. They might weigh as much as 5 pounds or more.
In that case it prolly weighs 160 pounds. Between 150 and 200 pounds. the engines are 2 or 3 pounds? Geez are they just a plastic shell; the "engine" itself and and the trucks I would think would add some weight.
Thats the thing. The entire engine is made of plastice. The only metal is the wheels, axles, and motors. And there are 2 motors per unit. They are housed inside the trucks themselves. However, we have some extremely heavy engines as well. We have a USA trains 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. Its made of die cast steel all the way through. Including its 6 batteries, it weighs over 75 pounds. Its the largest and heaviest mass produced G scale engine in the world and will run you about $4,000 out of the box.
Those engines only weigh around 12 pounds? I'm surprised since they have batteries that they don't weigh more. I'd weigh just one car to see what it is then just multiply by how many there are; if they're 5 pounds each the train weighs 450 pounds! 390 in cars and 60 in engines. Actually I'd guess the cars are less than 5 pounds a piece if the engines are only 12. I can't believe they are that light. I'm driving 50 miles to my Rochester house to weigh my non-battery USA Trains one! just kidding.
Surprised me too haha. Actually the batteries are most of the weight. They probably only weigh 2 or 3 pounds out of the box. And in case your wondering all the cars and engines are made by USA trains. It would be hard to weigh the train by weighing just one car. They are 5 car articulate sets so the end cars would weigh slightly more because of extra truck. so you would have to weigh a set of 5. But I wouldn't be surprised if each car only weighed a pound though. Maybe more, maybe less.
that is so cool; you've never had it derail from too much inward pull around all those corners? Especially with the incline. Considering all the cars are the same and there are 78 of them, might you know what they weigh and be able to figure out the total weight of all that? Plus the engines; I'm sure their weight is published or easy to find out.
we used to have them derail from too much inward pull "(or "clothes line"). But we figured out how many sets we can put before we need to put another set of engines. That is why there are mid-train and rear train helpers. We can actually do longer sections before we need helper but we shorten it just to be safe. We don't know the actual weight or drag or any of that about the train. We do know that each engine weighs around 12 pounds though. We can watch the train and know if its too long or not
Our engine are all battery powered. The railroad is way to large for track power. We run 3, 6 volt, 2.8 amp hour, heavy duty rechargeable batteries run in series to give us a total of 18 volts in each locomotive. What as an added benefit adds around an extra 10 pounds to each engine, increasing the total tractive effort. If you want track power though, there are many options for transformers. The easiest and cheapest would be a 20 or 24 volt basic transformer.
I don't think that the train going over the bridge is the same train. The train below has the two middle engines couples together. The train on top is seperated by a intermodel car.
Its the train, trust me. Its a big loop that goes around a pond. The video isn't long enough for you to see the next 2 engines. count the cars in between the engines then watch one of my other videos, The worlds largest garden railroad parts 1& 2 to see the railroad it was run on. The bridge that you saw in this video is near the end of part 2.
Amazing! Like your name indicates... ;) I've been admiring that layout ever since I had found it on youtube. Thanks for sharing!

I've got an interesting question; how many WATTS is that taking/transformers putting out/engines capable of/however you rate that.

Its just enough to get trains moving, nothing special like DCC. We dont rate WATTS

why do people never put the handrails on their engines?!?!?
strangledparrot 2 years ago
We take them off when we get them. they only get get chewed up and end up looking like hell. we put thyem back on for photo runs.

5 locomotives and 78 cars!
Balasidine957 2 years ago
that was only 78 cars? LOL I know that's a lot but it had to be longer than that.... didn't it?

Great train, but next time tell the guys to shut up while you are filming - the chatter kinds of kills the atmosphere.

Holy shit!
Thats soo kewl with what you can do with G-scale. I have an HO scale layout.
That looked sooo real...cept with the giant foot crossing over the train. hahaha

thank you!!!!!

It's realistic. There is even the clacking of the track and some wind/rail noise.
Awesome.

haha nice. i actually thought those were big trains, but then i saw a giant foot step over; that kind of gave it away...
