Trust me, I'm as big a Coldplay fan as it gets, bought everything they've ever recorded, listen to them non-stop, seen them live, and I have tickets to see them again next year. This isn't a cover. It's just taking the words of the original song and putting them to an entirely different melody. It's not even attempting to be the same song; the lyrics are practically the only thing that are the same. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great; but it's not Strawberry Swing.

not random improvisation and making up chords that were not in the original song.

This is indeed a cover. A cover does not have to be an exact replica or else there would really be no point. Unknown artists take known artist's songs and adjust them to their liking.
