Nonsense: Washington chose to play the best team out there, versus a 6 - 6 Michigan team which was one of their worst ever. In 1984, the Holiday Bowl was low-end. No school would have picked it over the Orange Bowl. I went to the Holiday Bowl that year and saw a weak BYU team beat a weaker Michigan team (barely). No way in hell should BYU have been awarded the national title. They played high school teams. Washington would have killed them - by a massive score.
Barry Switzer was the man! I just read Charles Thompson's book "Down and Dirty" and that fucker tries to lay all the blame for his cocaine dealing shit he got into trouble for on Switzer. Fuck Charles Thompson.
yes even a mediocre usc team can win the PAC ten and yes Michigan was very mediocre that year. what else do you want nowhere but nowhere is there any rule that says you haft to play in a certain bowl game or play on a certain day to win a national championship. washington had there chance but opted to only play for second place that's what they got nothing will change that. get use to it and get over it
@misfits4life1 UW was by far the best team in the nation in '84 and would have taken a shit on BYU if they played.. hell, oklahoma probably would have also. You're the first person i've ever heard say that they opted out of playing BYU either, so that doesn't sound credible.
@thehuntman47 UW wasn't the best team that year byu would have killed them and yes the holiday bowl tried to reach out to Washington but opted not to play them. let see play byu for the national championship or play oklahoma in the orange bowl no brainer there
@misfits4life1 BYU played no opponents in the top 20.. thats why they were undefeated and thats why they ended up in the holiday bowl. If washington had BYU's schedule that year they would have been undefeated with a 50 point victory margin in every game.
@thehuntman47 washington played one ranked team that they lost to so whats your point . washington would have barely one half the game byu played that year
@misfits4life1 One ranked opponent? They lost a tough game to a high calibre USC team and killed #4 michigan at the beginning of the season. Not to mention the win over the ranked Sooners in the orange bowl. BYU was the first team ever to be awarded the title without beating a ranked opponent at any point during the season. Oh, and please learn how to speak english before you respond again. its obnoxious.
@misfits4life1 a mediocre USC team that ended up pac-10 champions.. (albeit a fluke) and a mediocre michigan team ranked #4 in the nation... interesting
@CLUTCH,i don't care if they never win another game,im gonna always root for my team. Its real easy to cheer when the goings good, but when its bad,the winning is even better. This is a down year for florida, simple as that,if meyer keeps addazio AS OC?Then yeah, the down years will continue. But,despite addazio, florida is 3 plays away from being 7-1.The horrible upheld call against lsu(when the nose of the ball was in front of the holder)and 2 missed fg's by the punter against msu.
Remember watching this exciting game well! YES, Barry the DAWGS were the Best team that year, too bad we're were cheated out of the #1 ranking though..
That's what Dawg fans think. We'll never know, for certain, but I, personally, will ALWAYS believe that the U-Dub had the better team that year. Too bad they didn't get the chance to prove it.
Switzer's a "class" guy. I contend that Switzer's the best College coach in my lifetime and I graduated from LSU back in '86. Also, the Triple Option is far from dead.
the officeal penalty was "faggotry on the field" which is a penalty levied against any team using shetlands as a mascot. Shetland ponies are, without a doubt, the gayest mascot ever. BOOMER!
I could never remember if it was "takeaways" the Dawgs led the nation in that year, or turnover ratio. Based on your statistic I think it was probably number of "takeaways." I'm in agreement with you - given the opportunity the Dawgs would've KILLED BYU that season. Too bad they didn't get the chance to prove it.
It would have been ugly. I know Bosco got hurt in the Holiday Bowl and that hurt BYU, but still, Michigan wasn't very good in 1984. The two best teams in '84 (not counting Florida, who cheated) were the two that played in the Orange Bowl.
It's a little "touchy" for Dawg fans to say that 'cause the Dawgs played, and beat, Michigan that year, too. But the difference is that the Dawgs beat Michigan in "The Big House" and held Michigan without a touchdown until the last minute of the game. Plus, the Wolverines were coming off of a BIG win over the Miami Hurricanes the week before, so they were pretty confident. By the time BYU played them they were a mere 6 - 5 and they had TONS of injuries. The Huskies played the "better" UM in '84.
Switzer was right. Washington was the best team in the country that year. BYU, with an unbelievably easy schedule that gave them an undefeated season, was named number one. BYU wasn't even in a major bowl that year. They were in the Holiday Bowl for God's sakes.
This had to of been recorded in the LP record mode. The tracking glitches that appear have the distinct look of an LP recording being played on another VCR. For some reason only LP recordings play 100% good on the VCR it was recorded with.
Switzer did have a good point back in 1984. He was mad because BYU was in position to win the national championship (Oklahoma was #2 at that time) when the #1 Cougars had played an unbelievably easy schedule. Their toughest opponent was a 6-6 Michigan team that they barely beat.
Nowadays, the BCS rewards one-loss teams with tougher schedules over non-BCS teams that go undefeated with easier schedules. Otherwise, Boise State and Utah would have been the 2006 and 2008 national champions.
Yup. That's why the BCS takes "strength of schedule" into account, as it should. Yeah, it's REAL TOUGH to go unbeaten when you get tested no more than about 1 or 2 times a year. How would the '84 BYU Cougars have done in the Pac-10 or the Big 8 or the SEC? How would Boise State do in the Pac-10 or the Big XII or the SEC now? I'm pretty damn sure neither of them would end up unbeaten or with only one loss!!
I never understood how Washington got out of having to play in the Rose Bowl that year. These were easily the two best teams in the country in 1984 (BYU should be ashamed to claim that "title"), but isn;t the PAC10-Big10 contractually obligated to the Rose Bowl back then?
They didn't "get out of it." Washington's only loss that year (to USC, in L.A., 7 - 16) kept them from winning the Pac-10, so they had to choose a different bowl to play in. Some people claim that the Huskies chose not to play BYU in the Holiday Bowl. I don't remember if that was true, or not. What I'm pretty sure WAS true is that the Orange Bowl paid out a LOT more money to its participants than the Holiday Bowl did.
Plus they probably figured that it made more sense to play a national power like Oklahoma in their bowl game than a "johnny-come-lately" like BYU in an effort to impress voters. Obviously that line of thinking (if it was actually there) didn't work out for them. But I still regard the 1984 Washington Huskies as, if not the national champion, CERTAINLY better than BYU on the basis of their respective strengths of schedule.
I was at the game in the end zone the original kick was kicked into. The penalty did negate one field goal, but Washington was the better team. There was a lot of confusion in the whole stadium when the ref threw a flag at the schooner. OU was just getting some momentum in a knockdown-dragout game. OU looked worn out the whole night & made some big mental mistakes (Buster Rhymes catching a punt/kick while running out of bounds at own 2). Washington should've been consensus nat'l champs.
"The Boz" (I believe he was a freshman on that Sooner team) later said that Washington won that game only because it had been something like 4 or 5 years since OU had been to the Orange Bowl and that the Sooners were "just happy to be there" that year. I'm not sure if he meant that or if he was just trying to rile Seattle fans up since that's where he (briefly) played his pro ball. Regardless, the Huskies passed a MUCH tougher test in the Orange Bowl than BYU did in the Holiday Bowl that year.

Wow...just read the description...typical of OU fans to rewrite history in order to make it seem like they were screwed out of a game they should have won...
In the description you say the field goal was "blocked by Washington"...except it wasn't. It was good. That's why Switzer didn't complain about it in this video. The reporter says..."You still got your field goal" and Switzer says "it wasn't a big deal...the kick was good after all that".
It was blocked idiot. The next series they held Washington to a 3 and out, got the ball back, drove down the field and got a field goal. OU was leading 17-14, but it as a different series they got the field goal.
I'm a Husky fan, and thank you for posting this video. No slams here, OU was an outstanding hard hitting team, it just wasn't their day it was a great game, alot of excitement, and the Orange Bowl in my opinion was and always will be the true Natl. Championship that year not BYU...that was an insult to both teams.

Fuck yeah we do. As a matter of fact we got more then either OU or Alabama, I just came here to state the facts about this coach. I hate him yes because he screwed the longhorns, breaking the rules and not giving a fuck. Then I kinda like him because he led Dallas to a superbowl. :)
to end all arguments about this game there was no chance of either Washington or Oklahoma playing for the national championship that year the only thing that was at stake was an orange bowl victory . second if Washington wanted to play for the national championship they could have played brigam young university but they didn't in fact they pass up a chance to play them opting to play in the orange bowl instead that decision cost them a shot at the title that year
Texas Tech? Starting quarterback got hurt in the 2nd series while we had the lead. TCU? Rebuilding year 2005 (In which we still won the holiday bowl), Colorado? Blew a 17 point lead in the 4th quarter, Boise State? Ranked ahead of us when we played and beat every team they played that year, USC? Ya... we played like *insert expletive* in that game, Texas? We own Texas, LSU? Lost by 7 in a game that was pretty much a home game for them with a hurt QB SEC? We've gone 2-1 against the SEC since 2000

12-0 BYU beats 6-6 Michigan 24-17 in a NEUTRAL location
BYU beats 3-7-1 Pitt 20-14 AT Pitt
9-2-1 Oklahoma beats Pitt 42-10 AT Pitt
11-1 Washington beats Michigan 20-11 AT Michigan
Washington beats Oklahoma 28-17 CROSS COUNTRY in neutral location
Washingtons lone loss coming to a 9-3 USC Trojan team AT USC
BYU didnt defeat an opponent that finished in the top 25 and the UW team that lost to BYU in 1985 lost 17 starters from their 11-1 84 team.

Fuck yeah we do. As a matter of fact we got more then either OU or Alabama, I just came here to state the facts about this coach. I hate him yes because he screwed the longhorns, breaking the rules and not giving a fuck. Then I kinda like him because he led Dallas to a superbowl. :)

The wishbon is a formation, not a play, you idiot. And you can't own a formation, just like you can't own players from the state of Texas. \

As he said, Washington was the best Football team in the country that year, not BYU, who played ZERO teams in the top 20 that year!!

cannot agree with you more, this was the natl championship, regardless the winner

to end all arguments about this game there was no chance of either Washington or Oklahoma playing for the national championship that year the only thing that was at stake was an orange bowl victory . second if Washington wanted to play for the national championship they could have played brigam young university but they didn't in fact they pass up a chance to play them opting to play in the orange bowl instead that decision cost them a shot at the title that year
