i got an idea Q... how bout you stop being a bitch and just come out to the best Electronic Music event in the country?. its not free to put the event on so why should it be free to watch it? its also a shit-ton of work. but then again...why should u have to pay?
This isn't "happy happy dance festival" music... techno comes out of a complex layering of interesting sounds... guys (and gals) putting together crazy sounds that reflect deep base instincts. Close your eyes, bite your lower lip, and lose yourself to it. : )
We're not a nice city. We're not, in many ways, nice people. Certainly not cheery and happy. We're pissed off factory workers without jobs in a ghost town thats either empty or burnt down.
This music was made to represent the city with sound, and with futuristic sound at that.
I'm with ek9009, you really missed out. They had a great lineup and some incredible performances this year. And the atmosphere...well, it was DEMF, what more can I say?!? ;)
I'm sure it was blast. But I live in NYC now and the way the hotel prices have sky rocketed and the fact that they are charging people to get in has made it a lot less feasible for a lot of people to go to. It has become more like one big corporate ad than a celebration of electronic music. And yes, I realize it's necessary to charge to keep it going, but it just sucks for a lot of us long time Detroit techno fans.
Yeah, I know what you mean about hotel prices and all. It does kinda suck, especially for out-of-towners. I have to say that even with the corporate sponsorship and charging for admission, it didn't have that commercial feel to it like most big events do. The vibe was the same as it always was, one big day-rave with people gathering to celebrate the music and have a good time.
And I must also say, it doesn't matter who sponsors DEMF, it will always be the people who are attending who make it such a special event. On a side note and since you live in NY, did you happen to go to Camp Bisco? I wanted to go see Infected Mushroom and Hallucinogen perform so bad, but I had already expended my summer entertainment budget and couldn't get off work that week anyways. :(
$21 day pass, $41 weekend pass, or $150 VIP pass. Not too bad for a 3 day event. What got me was the price of food and refreshments. Outrageous!! $3+ bottles of water, $3+ for a Pepsi, nearly $8 for a beer, etc. And of course you couldn't bring in any outside food or drink. I can understand making a profit on the refreshments, but when they charge 20 times the actual cost of a bottle of water or 4 times that of a cola, that is just plain greed. But, what you going to do...
For me, I just don't support the festival. They have chosen to go for all my money, so I give them none. And maybe I'm just getting older, but the last few just didn't have that good feeling that the first ones had. Hell, I even have a bad knee which keeps me from dancing. And no, I didn't go to Bisco, I gues I am just pretty out of touch now. I still listen to my Richie and Juan Atkins but what are you going to do...?
I hear ya. I just bought as little there as possible. The second & third days I took a cooler with bottles of water (same kind they were selling) and Pepsi, left it my car which was parked in the parking structure right next to Hart Plaza and just snuck them in one or two at a time as needed. Kind of a pain to have to run back and forth and sneak them by security, but it sure beat lining the vendor's pockets. ;-)

Yes.
I love this Music anyway.
Every nation...every culture got his own touch of electronic music. and thats why i love techno - it's so full of storys, different storys.

Detroit techno, the original techno, was about sounding cold and futuristic. It was, in a sense, a combination of Kraftwerk and Parliament.

20 some odd years later, Cosmic Car still is still one of the coldest techno jams of all times. And Alleys of Your Mind....OMG!!!
Man, I had a blast at the festival this year. It was awesome!!

This was the first year I didn't go to DEMF. It's gone downhill big time. But damn, I wish I was there for this.
