This is what he means; When you become enlightened, you are opening your minds eye. He makes several references to the minds eye in this show. Enlightenment is a constant state of bliss and only the lucky are fortunate to experience it during life, whereas the unlucky experience it after death. When you open your third eye, you see a bright light and colors you cant recognize with your normal eyes, colors you never knew existed. I should know, I've experienced it.
You guys are overlooking "what he saw." The island was the place they were all brought to, the place where they could start their lives anew with each other. Locke saw all of this, the beauty of the island. It makes me think of the quote from the Buddha about a simple flower being beautiful. Look around you, the world is a beautiful place. That's what John Locke saw, and he knew they were meant to be there.
what he saw was the BLACK MONSTER maybe in the human form, or some other form, and he convinced him to work with him, for sure he met the black monster and had a chit chat with him, refer to my video number 11
@LostMomentsandClues im pretty sure that he saw the light, the smoke monster new that he could manipulate john into thinking all that so that he would kill himself and come back. This allowed the monster to use his body and try to escape, and he was almost successful. John probably saw the light when he looked at the monster when it "scanned him" in the episode where it stopped in front of him in season 1
@wrathcard In the season 1 finale when Locke encountered the monster again he was terrified as opposed to the first time. Simply, this is just the duality that is found throughout the show. The Monster is no different, it has good and evil in it just like any person does.
@wrathcard Mother told Jacob that every man has a bit of this light inside of him. So John Locke could have seen some of that light within the monster. The Monster also has the ability to read your mind like it did with Ben and show you the past events of your life. In a way the Monster reflects your soul. So John could have seen the light within himself being reflected by the Smoke Monster. The Monster is very much connected to the light.
@wrathcard No, no, no. Locke saw the monster, sure. But he ALSO saw the white light cave - we just don't see him see it. He tells Mr. Eko in S03E05, "I know what you saw; I saw it too. It was a beautiful, white light." (a paraphrase, not a quote).
Locke saw both the Monster and the Light by S01E05. In fact, I think he even says at some point in season 5 or 6 that he's been trying to find that cave again.

I'm confused as to what he actually saw. How could the light have come out of the cave and confronted him?
