I you use hydrogen in a internal combustion engine like bmw and mazda...you will still get pollutants....because a small amount of lubricating oil is burnt is the process. However a fuel cell car ie hondas..there is no pollutants. The only zero emission car is electric or a fuel cell.
There is a VERY large misconception here. Fuel cells are a marketing adage, completely and utterly useless. The only way to go is to simply modify the gasoline engine to run on STRAIGHT hydrogen. Also, the octane rating is above 130... more horsepower :)
i agree, it does look very slow from the start as well as around the track. however, for a car with zero environmentally harmful emissions, it seems well worth it!
i heard the government was holding back the production of all hydrogen cars for 5 years to rape us americans with the fuel prices while they still can...
suzukichamp, you don't think they're going to rape you with Hydrogen prices too?
They're holding back on production because it's failing. Battery technology is surpassing Hydrogen technology, and its cheaper. Fuel cells are made out of Platinum - a precious metal - another thing they will rape you on when it burns out in 50,000 miles.
that's a very... republican thought. you may be saving on an upfront cost on your combustion engine that gets a 30% burn efficiency, don't forget about the high cost of maintenance on that combustion engine, wherein mine only needs minimal maintenance every 100,000 miles. there are 10-second electric cars racing in the nedra, how fast is your hydro? additionally, the long term goal is to minimalize energy usage. a ICE producing a 30% burn efficiency is NOT the future.
What? I'm a republican (as far right as you can get) on every single topic except for this one. This is one of the only hings I think it's OK for the government to spend lots of money on.
If you're gonna go out and spend well over 2 trillion dollars it may as well be on clean energy than killing babies and forcing everybody to have the same crappy healthcare and pay for it with taxes.
And I think it's VERY important that we develop both H2 Fuel Cells and Internal Combustion engines. Fuel Cells for buses, laptops, cell phones, etc., then internal combustion engines for cars, etc. so that we can continue to enjoy the wonderful sound of a V-8 and watch Indy Cars.
And for the moron who said they'd freeze in the winter, the steam that comes out is well over 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Also, think about this, Raybob95 - It takes electricity to make Hydrogen through electrolysis. It takes electricity to compress the Hydrogen into a cylinder. It takes diesel trucks and trains to transport it. It's then fed into a fuel cell catalyst made of $20,000 worth of platinum to turn it back into electricity in order to spin an electric motor.
You've used 70% more energy just to convert electricity into gas rather than just storing it in a battery, and you got less power out of it...
Which still makes you a right-wing Republican lol.
I don't think you understand how inefficient fuel cells are, Raybob95. They have 4-second electric race cars - you can't do that with fuel cells, they don't have a high enough output.
Also, Hydrogen has a very low BTU rate, meaning it doesn't produce the same power output as petrol does, meaning they'll never use it in the Indy 500, and your V8 will only make 190hp at peak efficiency.
I wonder if every car ran on hydrogen, the highways would always be wet... that's kind of dangerous lol. There should be a cold storage tank for the water that you can get at for refreshment during your drive. =)

wow, with a top speed of 80. that's gotta be a world record. piece of junk. they probably made more pollution in that single run than my car has made in it's entire life... hydrogen is not clean people. do your homework.
Idiot. The electricity required to produce hydrogen causes almost twice the pollution from coal & gas plants for the same horsepower - not to mention using 8-mpg diesel trucks for distribution & transport. Hydrogen costs half as much to make, so invested corporations will regulate the price & double profits. Why do you think it's being federally funded?
Hydrogen is clean energy, however coal and gasoline are not. If solar or hydroelectricity were used to produce it, would hydrogen energy be any less clean?
It would still be less clean than electric cars, half as efficient, & not remotely as convenient. Electricity is on a nationwide grid, with no transport costs. It's a direct charge, electric motors will produce twice the power with little maintenance. Plus, Hydrogen engines still need lubricated cylinders.
I simply argued that it was clean, I have no doubt that with current technology it's full potential has not been realized. What you have to understand is that without trying there are no quantum leaps. You look at technology as something that should work perfectly the first time and impress the fuck out of you. You are very wrong.
Agreed. I understand your viewpoint, and I do enjoy the physics behind Hydrogen combustion, being an chemical engineer. However my wife is an electrical engineer, and I've yet to provide a legitimate contradiction to her theories that support Hydrogen's legitimacy without a hidden corporate demeanor.
Honestly... the future of transportation actually lies in magnetics, antigravitational propulsion, & the law of attraction; rather than combustion or electricity.
Interesting comment bennytan. But all my electric energy comes from two 4'x7' solar panels on my roof... Much like thousands of people around the country. I usually get a check from the electric company every month for around $40, and that returned energy from my panels is distributed back to others throughout the grid. Don't be ignorant benny, pony-up & go solar.
Hydrogen requires 60% MORE electricity to produce the same converted kW of usable power to the wheels versus a direct battery-to-motor electric operation to the wheels. Simply put: E-cars cost approximately 10 cents per converted gallon versus Hydrogen's 30 cents per converted gallon (suggesting you made the Hydrogen cell at home and didn't have to buy it from Exxon's new Hydrogen factory, where you're likely to pay $1 per converted gallon).
You think you're the only one using Solar, I have solar too on my roof, and I also sell it to my electric company.
And tell me how much it cost to convert Internal Combustion car on electricity? Thousands of dollars!!!... I use Hydrogen and it only cost me $80 + water, an I save 40% on my gas, the electricity is coming from my alternator, and its FREE!!!
The Honda FCX has an electric motor which is powered by liquid hydrogen. Instead of burning it like in an internal combustion engine, the electric current hydrogen generates is used to power the electric motors. There, stop asking stupid questions. olleylewin is the victim of penis envy in the form of patriotism for his third world country.
... The electricity produced from hydrogen is 70% efficient over a lithium ion battery. It also has 50-odd parts for the hydrogen storage & conversion system, which will need servicing just like a combustion engine. The Honda FCX is only useful if you can't find a plug.
this car probably burns the hydrogen in which the process of cultivating the hydrogen in the first place still takes a significant amount of fossil fuel burning in the process. hydrogen is another attempt from the auto makers at keeping you the public addicted to fossil fuels.
It's gonna be like Tucker(the movie). Hydrogen/electric cars will be developed. Then some someone with ties to the oil companies will recall all of them and destroy them just to maintain our dependence on oil.
I truly feel sad for the hydrogen highway planers of the world, for our dream is very different of how a car or any engine for that matter will be run on hydrogen on demand units. They are just throwing money away planing for a future that the people in the, "Hydrogen Revolution," will never let happen. Hydrogen on demand is the answer, just not the one they want, for they lose control of power.
Its a concept- its meant to stand out. Its just a body really to develop the technology. More to the point wheres america contribution?? Ha I hear you say- GM and ford have developed this too. Yes they have- in europe and japan. They may have the name but they, being american lack the engineering. Yanks cant even get normal engines wrong let alone something of a new era! It is ugly though!
solar power? water power? here in berlin are hydrogen fueling stations that get their hydrogen from a built-in solar cell and standard water from the tap
Here's the thing with hydrogen cars. Yeah they are clean, and enviroment friendly. But, where will we get the energy to make the hydrogen fuel??? OIL. Unless you want to go with nuclear power, which let's face it, it isn't all that safe.

srgturtle, you can do that with a 100cc motorcycle too. It's aerodynamics and gear ratio, has nothing to do with power.
