-- Mairead is one of a group of talented beautiful young women who perform like no one I've ever seen. The orchestra with all of it's string & wind instrumente; & percussion set the pace for the unbelievable voices of these performers. Add to that the pixie-like charm of this firefly violin player, who seems to float & fly everywhere on stage, & the audience is left breathless. This is truly an unforgettable musical event that has something for everyone.
This song is actually a hymn from the new testament. Hymn #260 written 1899 by John R. Clemens. And it's Night, not Light: There Is No Night. Done beautifully as always by Mairead :)))
And here's the rest: All the gates of pearl are made, In the city foursquare; All the streets with gold are laid, And there is no night there. All the gates shall never close To the city foursquare; There lifes crystal river flows, And there is no night there. There they need no sunshine bright, In that city foursquare; For the Lamb is all the light, And there is no night there.
So lovely, and the music is just awesome. so much better on live, than on the CDs or maybe its just my player system. I spend so much time on my computer I love to take breaks and watch and listen to Mariead. She does wonders for the soul with that music of hers.
Amazon also lists the song as "There Is No LIGHT", but Mairead's official website and Celtic Collections lists it as "There Is No NIGHT". I vote for NIGHT.
I love this song sooo much! It always makes me wanna cry. I'm actually crying right now. It just reminds me of home. I'm not from Ireland but it reminds me of home because I was listening to this song in the car with my grandmother (I live with my grandparents) on my way home from college for Christmas break. Now I'm back in college and homesick and this song really gets to me. My sweater got wet from all this crying I'm doing. It's sooo beautiful!
I hope I´ll play this on my 2nd absolvent concert (I learn play piano for 8 years and recorder and flute for 10 years (I started to learn piano when I was six and recorder when I was four) ) , but on alto recorder, on flute..... But I know that I can´t play it as vell as máiréad.
YOu may not be as good as her now, but practice is something that will change that, perhaps some day you will be a famous violinist! The important thing is that you just have to keep trying and think you can, i think you can i don't even know you or know how you play.
If you want to settle the arguement about what IT is called, you can go to the Celtic Woman website and see what SHE calls it. You will even get the chance to see and hear her play some Bach and other pieces. SUPER TALENTED LADY !!!!
Sorry but their not. They are different even thought they seem the same.Trust me I know.My friend Mina plays the fiddle and her younger sister plays the violin.
It is not, but you may believe what you would like. I went and looked at four different websites to make sure I wasn't wrong, and all of them say that they are the same thing. Fiddle is just a nickname for the violin.
You are partially right. I play violin and the only difference between a violin and fiddle is the bridge or in lay way terms the piece of wood that keeps the strings up. In a fiddle, the bridge is slightly bigger and wider than that of a violin's. But yeah its the same instrument all you do is change a small part.
Thanks for your clarification. Kindly tell us if it's possible to identify from sound effect whether one's playing fiddle or violin. Under what circumstances should use violin or a fiddle. Thanks a lot.
The difference between a violin and a fiddle is the bridge on the violin.. Fiddles will have less arch on the bridge... Additionally, fiddles have lower string heights and minor tonal adjustments to give it the "fiddle" sound.
TECHNICALLY there is no difference between a fiddle and a violin except what the user prefers to call it, but you are right. Those who fiddle tend to use flatter bridges to make it easier to play double-stops. That question used to bug me a lot before I finally extensively researched it.
BUT fiddlers usually use a flatter bridge than classical violinists. This makes easier to do quick movements and play double-stops (or sometimes triple-stops).
There is a video of Mairead playing this piece on the Celtic Tenors Live In Concert DVD. Wish I had a copy to share. It is a truly inspired piece and inspiring performer.
The recurring bit in the 2nd half of the melody where she slides from the F# down to the B is one of the most gorgeous moments in any piece I've ever heard ... this is easily my favourite Máiréad track.
Yes, it would hae been great to have seen her expressions while she was playing this. That pretty smile and those haunting eyes tell a lot about the woman. It is always a pleasure to watch the prettiest fiddler in the world perform !!!!
The hymn is an entirely different tune. The sheet music can be found online.

Sure thing. I have to split it in two comments, here is the first one:
In the land of fadeless day
Lies the city foursquare;
It shall never pass away,
And there is no night there.
Refrain:
God shall wipe away all tears,
Theres no death, no pain, nor fears,
And they count not time by years,
For there is no night there.

Hello!
From what hymnal? The old National Baptist?
I sang it at my grandmother's funeral in 1966- I was 10 years old.
I sang it to a dying friend 2 days ago, and he died the next day...he drifted off to sleep like he was listening to a lullabye- so beautiful.

Hi there. It's the Trinity Hymnal. Hymn #548. And some more data: #220 in Hymns for Worship Revised and #407 in Sacred Selections for the Church.

Besides, it can't be that, the song is too lovely. Saying that there is no light, would imply it would be a very sad song, this is more romantic.

A violin sound is more classical like Bach and Mozart but fiddle players usually play Celtic/Irish/western types of music.
