This is a great song. No offense to anyone, but Saul does not sound like the typical black musician. (I'm black, and I know that for a fact). Same with Darius Rucker. This guy has some serious talent, and Trent Reznor? He's amazing in all aspects. I could listen to this song all day without stopping. This song applies to everyone, even those who don't like this song. We all have flaws, or "breaks" in us, and we get smashed up and broken, but we still have potential in some areas.
@bionitroop First, that just IS kind of offensive...
Also, you're black so you know what a typical black musician is? Whether you know or not, I do not know, but being black is far from a good argument, and in fact, may work against you, since chances are high you'll be biased, again, not saying you are.
Just saying, whether he's black or white, he doesn't sound like a typical musician to me. Not like a typical black musician too, of course.
I have grown up with a white family. I was adopted out to one. I grew up listening to a lot of country music, and then started experimenting with other genres once I discovered how to access it.
What I said was far from offensive, it was accurate. Since I am a member of the black community, yes, I do know what type of music typical black musicians make. It's very much urban sounding whether it's rap or even jazz. This was not intended to start any sort of argument?
@YoungDirtyCwalk (continued) It makes me wonder why this is an issue. I said what is true. Saul Williams is black, or African American if you please. So? He does things that a typical BLACK musician does not do. He does everything a typical musician does. He makes music. That's what typical musicians do. He, like Reznor has amazing talent. His talent disproves many stereotypes about black music which I like. I like people to know that stereotypes are disgusting. Williams is doing it. :)
In my own personal experience, this represents what a lot of life is about. Being, used, abused, broken and everyone trying to turn you into them. But it is also about keeping that beauty, that art in your heart, mind and soul that is yours. It is about being true to yourself and wading through all the shit and being able to stay true to your self, and the end of the day being able to play YOUR song; no one else's. If you can do that, it's wonderful. Despair and hope in one. That's what I hear.
im a HUGE reznor/nin fan. now im a huge Saul fan too. and this goes down in history as probably as legend a collaboration as Quincy & MJ. probably replaying it the 40th time today now..
@johnnybfernz Yeah I agree, when this album first came out as a free download I snatched it up and played it on my mp3 player for about 2 months straight. I learned every word and every beat. I'm a massive NIN fan and it made me realize the greatness of Saul as well.
@metalgearcolin75 Wowww you guys got Saul for NIN|JA? I'm so pissed.. Jane's performance was phenomenal but I felt like NIN wasn't that into the show (they look weird playing with the sun up too)
@haisevaewok wow .. Trents NIN albums are totaly different from each other .. Almost like he switched personality's on each one .. TDS sounds nothing like WT , and TF sounds nothing like PHM .. LOL .. For you to say that shows you havent listed to much of his work ..
@sickmessiah Can't I just have an opinion? To me Trent's music sounds pretty much the same. Not that it's a bad thing. The album's have a different sound to them yes.. but the "personality switching" to me is just a load of bull. Every album (lyric-wise) is a bunch of whining and angst.
@haisevaewok@Sickmessiah it all sounds similar because it's industrial. it sounds different because Trent is very good at what he does. he does tell stories, as year zero was a concept album. and @haisevaewok, you don't sound like much of a fan. now lets just talk about how amazing Saul Williams is, not just on this album but his previous albums and poetry books.
@TheTfraze So being a fan means I have to give up any analytical thoughts I might have? Trent has a very apparent manner of singing and writing music so it's normal to sound quite a bit alike. And I never said it was a bad thing. He has an influencial touch. Just like Josh Homme. He has manners and techniques in singing, playing and producing that it always tends to leave a mark on the work he's doing. The new Arctic Monkeys album and the Vultures album are a prime example. Oops off-topic.
@haisevaewok Isn't it good make that sound for yourself? To have that one instantly recognizable and well known distinctive central sound? Trent created a sound that's similar because you know it's him and no one else. And he takes that sound you know to be NIN, and makes it different on each release. The Noise strum Year Zero, the synthpop laden Pretty Hate Machine, The heavy metal spasm of Broken. It's called, making that defining sound to be known as an artist and not a genre.
@haisevaewok Well, yeah... that's the reason people like the work of a particular artist (be it musical or otherwise), it has some continuity that they appreciate.
If you aren't really into his sound, then you won't appreciate it, just like any artist.
and... That said, he's actually far, far, far, far more diverse than most.
Not to sound like a wack job but this song feels like it always takes me to another worldly place. A fucking beautiful one at that. I love Saul and Trent, he goes without saying, but Saul's collaberation with Trent was golden and this album proved it a success.
I f#cking love this f#cking song! Saul Williams is so poetic, his voice is sooo haunting. HOW does he manage to hit the right notes so consistently and in a fashion that makes my heart want to leap out of my chest? I could cry to this song. Job well done. My hat's off to Will and Reznor right now. I can't stop listening to this. Fifth time in a row this morning! "Conductor! Conductor! Can you bring out the sound in me?" It's like a cry out to god. :)
I hate to say it because I'm a big NIN fan, but this album was better than any NIN cd I have. Why is this guy so fucking underated. It makes me sick.

@haisevaewok Yeah , Nin doest make party music .. Closer is the nearest thing for party music from nin .., nor does nin tell story's ..

@sickmessiah you'll find year zero told a pretty good story, if you followed it or not - with the music, and the viral campaign
