Everett was great. Brett was best but should they stop making Holmes films because Brett isn't around? Should people stop making records because the Beatles split up?
I too am a Jeremy Brett fan but have always thought Rupert Everett made a great Holmes and seemed to give him a sexiness not portrayed before as well -a pity they didnt make anymore more with him in.
By all accounts the latest Holmes film to hit the cinemas is a travesty .
yes -I too thought Rupert made a great Holmes( and Im a Jeremy Brett fan) wish there had been a few more made with him in the role-he came across as being clever ,cool and detached .
I personally thought Everett was an excellent Sherlock Holmes, very true to the books in his manner and it was a supurb performance all in all. Lets hope theres another in the future with Everett.
Best Holmes Everett, Brett and Rathbone in that order.
I love the music in the begining. Does anybody know the name of it? I think he is a very good Holmes but I still think Brett is the best. XD I can't wait until the next Holmes movie comes out! XD
To play Holmes and Watson AFTER Brett and Burke/Hardwicke is a courageous think per se. The have done it well! And the movie has a good soundtrack! Only the story is too cruel for my sense of a fine british crime story....!
How could anyone compete with Jeremy Brett? There is a spate of Holmes films coming out but without the late, unforgettable Brett none will amount to much, I guess. Everett, whom I usually like, is not bad but could not possibly compare with Brett's interpretation of the character. Brett fleshed out the obscure and perverted nature of Holmes, thus ambiguating the nature of good and right action, making it more human, more borderline. Everett opted for mere ennui.
You could go and adapt whatever you like, whether 'your' adaptation is a good one or not is another matter. Whether it would be better than JB's would also be a matter for interpretation and judgement. For some of us the standard (to match, surpass, etc.) has been set. Besides I was not talking in the abstract but referred to a concrete failure to match JB's Holmes. If you can do better, I shan't withhold praise, or as they say my neck of the woods 'ecce Rhodus, ecce saltus'.
@MarthaDelios Why does something have to be better? Not everything has to be the best. (After all, IMO the Clive Merrison is the best but I still love Brett.) Good can be good even when comparisons don't make it seem so.
Nobody is talking about 'being the best'(it'd be silly to think that way in cultural productions),but different interpretations, whether you like it or not, do establish a dynamic of comparison between themselves, competing points of looking at/understanding a character. JB did not just portray Holmes well, he opened up a new dimension in Holme's very character that is not immediately available in the book(s).For that reason, I claim,he has set the standard for portraying Holmes.
@MarthaDelios Did you partake of the new BBC modern-day adaptation with Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes? I think if anyone could match Brett's performance of Holmes, he could. Word perfect in nearly every line, borderline Aspergers with his reactions to various other characters and in the way he solved the case before him, I think Brett was stupendous in his perfermance don't get me wrong, but I think you need to be more open minded when Holmes is portrayed on screen.
Partake? No, but I did turn on. BC's portrayal was rather interesting, the makers going for that sleek look that is very en vogue.I remain sceptical, though, about the whole approach. In the rush to bring Holmes 'up to date' (as if that automatically means more profound) they presented SH as an eccentric, quirky-mad bloke, more Dr Who that SH.JB's SH was 'subjectivity in crisis', a SH who had it not been for the prosodic impulse of his deductions, he'd simply be ill, possibly psychotic.
First of all, I think that Brett was THE Holmes of his generation and he will surely be my Holmes.
But let's face it: the King is dead! Long live the King!
There will always be new addaptations -some will be good and some will be bad- and I like Everett in this one! In fact I would say: his is the best Holmes since Jeremy Brett (allthough he is obviously not grown into the role)!
I would like to see more Holmes- Episodes with Rupert... but this won't happen.
By far one of the finest actors that the British film industry has produced. Everett's class, diction and style are second to none. More please, Beeb!
Sorry but I think Jeremy Brett and David Burke were the best Holmes and Watson. I don't feel as if Ian Hart is enjoying the role. Burke however, is always happy and firendly.
I think Rupert should carry on wearing make up, skirts and being called Camilla.
Actually, Jeremy Brett was originally too old for the part, but seen as he was such an excellent candidate they made an exception.
However, I personally think Everett is horrible as Holmes. I like him as an actor, but, God, is he slimy as Holmes. And the real Holmes would have politely dismissed him, though he would always be scathing about any of Watson's wives, past wives and future wives regardless. He wants Watson to himself.
"Ignore him." Poor Watson, that was pretty harsh, just because he has a fiance and likes the odd cup of tea. lol. I'm sorry but Everett cannot touch the wonderful Jeremy Brett, he was the quintessential and ultimate Holmes.
Everett is pretty good, but I think he's too young. Holmes is supposed to be middle-aged or thereabouts by the early 1900s. I didn't like much of this film. The only thing I reckon they did really well was the London fog. Very realistic. And most of the period-details, but that was it.
Rupert is brillant!

eugh, can't say I like it, even from this clip. Hate Everett's voice, but to be honest I don't think anything can compare to JB's.

Sorry for the typo (on line 7) it should have been Holmes' and not 'Holme's' .

@MarthaDelios So, what, we should never adapt the SH stories again because some people think Brett is the best? What a shame that would be.
