@Shoknifeman I was refering to the early '60s.The Supremes were the biggest female group of all time, but they didn't have their first big hit "Where Did Our Love Go"until the summer of 1964 which was the mid '60s.
Every time I'd pass your house on the way to school in the morning, I'd think of you Mike S. Best you never knew a guy had a crush on you. Sorry to hear about you passing so late in our lives but you moved and there was no way I could say goodbye.
Ah, The Shirelles, singing as good as they looked! This is not one of their biggest hits, but, oh well, I always liked it! So, chrysler30062 thanks for the upload, as always thanks to You Tube for the space, and long live The Shirelles!
I close my eyes, mind wanders, and this is one song which can still bring me back to the heady optimistic feelings of unlimited vista that I felt in the late summer of 60 when Tonight was a hit along with A Million To One, Alley Oop, Yogi, Cruise To The Moon.
I was at a record hop in about 1958 in a suburb of Detroit, where the DJ spinning the records announced he brought a group he thought was great to sing live--it was the Shirelles! They were wonderful that night and have been ever since. They sang so soulfully, without the posturing you see so often in today's entertainers. Wonderful stuff--thanks a lot.
This is the one. This and Mama Said. Long before Betty Wright, this song was the jam. I bet Betty was influenced by this song. BITD, every teen sang this - it was an anthem. One could sing one's fantasy out loud right in front of your parents and get away with it! That's why it was so cool apart from vocally it was so slinky. 5***** for this post.
I don't think I had the slightest idea of what they were singing about when I first heard this song when it was released but I loved the music, and Still Do!!!!!
Thank you so much for the tune. iam abig fan of The Shirelles... its people like you that keep great music alive.. thank you and bless you ( chrysler30062 ) peace and love from California.. Usa.. Giorgio... :)
Oh, those black female groups of the sixties, how I loved them! I feel sorry for the kis of today they'll never know what it is to dance close to a romantic song like this. They have free sex today, but in reality it cost them their childhood, their youth. They throw it away too soon, what a terrible price to pay. Anyway, thanks for the wonderful memories. Even just hearing the name Scott Munie brought back memories.
When I listen to these songs, I think of what my parents were enjoying and how fortunate they were to be able to turn on the radio and have songs like this playing on the radio!
funride53 This song is one of the reason's they are One of the Greatest Girl Group's of all Time. Surely they are all Queen's. Thank You Girl's IN JESUS NAME!!!
R U really 14??? I assume your profile is accurate though. Wow! Glad you enjoy the motown sound and the beatle too---it was indeed a grand era for pop music. Very cool that you like this era so much.
Just curious about the Shirelles breaking barriers long before motown. I thought the Shirelles and early motown were about the same time (I think Smoky and the Miracles first hit was in in either 60 or 61. If i recall correctly, I bought Tonights the Night in 60 or 61). Other than their first hits, I thought the Supremes were sort of a musical confection..
They are the best....Shirley's voice is incredible especially when she sings "Baby it's you" NO ONE can sing that song like her...shirley wrote this song...."Tonight's the night" Another great one.....
@shaka1521 UP TO NOW I HAVE AROUND 35 OF THEIR SINGLES STARTING WITH "I MET HIM ON A SUNDAY", I BOUGHT BACK IN 1958.. I'M UP THERE WITH YOU, A GIANTANTIC SHIRELLES FAN.
Way back in the 60's, the Shirelles recorded this hit with alternate lyrics for WABC-AM Radio NYC's DJ Scott Muni (Scotzo) program introduction. Scott Muni evenually went on to a more sophisticated FM format in the CBS-FM era.
I think of that every time I hear the first few intro bars of the downbeat. Suddenly, I'm 10 years old, again and tuning in for the Top Ten Countdown of for the week's chart busters.
@scottybroker I sure do remember them. Cousin Brucie now does a show on the Sirius Radio 50s station and you can find Murry, The K's son selling CD music anthologies at most Greater Metro NYC Rock & Roll related events, antique car shows, Lead East, etc.
doo wop and the pop of mid50s-mid60 was the best music for "young people" in pop history. that really captured and evoked how all that stuff feels when youre that age

Damn this sounds so good. The 60s was the best with the music. ESPECIALLY the early 60s. The Shirelles were the girls before the Ronettes and the Motown girl groups.

The Shirelles were probably the biggest of the girl groups in the early '60s.

@5191keith I messed up. They're not from Brooklyn. They were from either Bayonne or Hoboken, New Jersey.
You're 100% right that a ton of great music came from Motown especially between 1960 and 1975.
