@redmartian Do you have more vids when you play it like here? Because i'm hooked to this sound, and instrument, like you use it in this video... Very basic, but sooo good in my head! ;-) Hope to hear from you! Anyway, congrats! You do a more than awesome job!!!
where's the mini part...not seeing anything mini about a wall of instruments LOL.
This isn't different from any other modular video on youtube. I'd rather see you try to make some type of music there rather than just jack around with it, which there are a million vids of modulars making just unorganized sounds, or playing one riff over and over.
Listen to all the Jealous swines trying to pull a strip off. If they hate modular synths so much what are they doing on you-tube watching videos about them?
Good luck and I hope you get it running real sweet.
Its awesome and all , but funny enough, I sold my expensive over the top synthesizers and down graded to much more straight foward ones. The variety of sounds is lower but the creative output is higher in my opinion. I look at this synth and I just get anxious lol.
Someone is actually comparing Reason Software to a REAL SYNTH! That's like comparing ROCKBAND to hiring Eddie Van Halen to play on your recordings.......
You know I actually had a good conversation with them, and the thought never occured to me to remove my comment. You make some interesting points but when have you really seen modular synths geared to mainstream "commercial" music?
@Rhythmicons Try listening to Micheal Stearns, Isao Tomita, Wendy Carlos, and many other artists. Recently Steve Roach, Robert Rich and many mainstream bands have modulars in their performance rigs.
@Yuwipiman I don't think any of those you listed couldbe considered mainstream though. IM not saying people don't tour with them, but my point is that its not very common. Ive actually had a nice conversation with Carlos.
He wasn't programming for Billy. He was getting it set up while we were delivering it to Billy and was just getting ready to demonstrate a function we happened upon that we coined "gate mixing".
The camera was just rolling while we were waiting for Billy to appear to see his new purchase.
That was me wearing the Matrixsynth 'T'. I told him I was going to. :)
Yes, Billy has a system 55 and an EMS synthi but, this video was taken while we were delivering Ichabod.
Generally you've got to keep your programming subdued for commercial tracks that have a lot else going. He wasn't programming for him, but still the point should be made that programming isn't always about making the most exotic thing.
I started trying to add 16 cabinets and all the modules he has to the shopping cart on the web site to find out how much he dropped on that behemoth but it was going to take a while.
That is a good starting place even though the system beyond the modules (power, cabinetry) is all custom. There are 32 VCOs, 16 VCFs, 16 VCAs, 16 EGs, 16 Mixers, 16 LFOs, buffers, gate delays, Utility 1 (gate producer and divider), 8 MIDI interfaces, Envelope followers .. this first video only shows it at maybe 7% utilization. I could (and hopefully will) spend years with this system.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
These are pretty expensive synths. A system configured like this one would easily set you back $895.50 or so. You can get much more flexibility by buying Reason for a fraction of the price.
Reason is a nice program, but a software synth will never replace actual circuitry. Its a talking point really to imply that the money you safe is worth the difference.
Not to be a jerk or anything but did you ever have the chance to play an analogue modular synthesizer? I don't think you understand Analogues appeal vs. software programs.
Thanks for the reply. I know K.L. the guy who repaired his 55, he had pics of it on his site. I really would be interested to hear some works of his using those synths, but its hard to pin down what albums they appear on.
Man I got that figure just adding up the cabinets! I really appreciate your reply. I would love to see a picture of the room those synths are all housed in. I have some Moog stuff myself but nothing on that level.
PM me if you like, it must be nice to work with that gear.
@beardsarecool all depends on who's playing it. He's not playing it to 1/100th of its potential. I know, although I don't have a Mattson my own modular makes some very complex music

Making music with a system like this is like tying your shoes with your teeth..
I'll NEVER understand the modular garbage...It is only on a very rare occasion that
I have ever hear anything REALLY good being composed on a modular synth.
What I don't also understand is how some act like this is the end all-be all
of synthesis...maybe it's some mucians way of saying " Look at me, I know what I'm doing " while it looks more like they have no clue.
