Birds singing in the background is an Earthly compliment unlike any other. As if the animal who first inspired song approved of where a man had taken it and unwound his soul around it. Segovia; a true virtuoso with a songbird in his heart.
Actually Tarrega transcribed a lot of Bachs pieces as well. And Llobet was the first to record on the guitar, if only he hadn't been as self critical as to not release the recordings the world might've looked different today.
Tarrega and llobet transcribed a lot of the spanish music. Barrios was the first to record bach transcriptions on the guitar. Segovia really brought the guitar to the concert stage and made contacts who wrote modern music for the guitar.
The squeaking in the background is actually the sound of bats, not birds. These tracks were all shot in the middle of the night. Granada gets very hot in the summer apparently. The film is called "The Song of the Guitar". 1976 I think.
"The second, filmed in the stunning Alhambra palace, Granada when Segovia was 84, has his narration off camera about his childhood years, why he chose the guitar, and goes to the beginning of his concert career. The music only option (41 minutes) is very useful. There is a lot of music and short passages of dialogue, and Segovia's playing and anecdotes are the stars of the show. The director Christopher Nupen provides enlightening introductions to each documentary as an extra feature".
The DVD containing this clip is "Andres Segovia-In Portrait."
The following is quoted from an Amazon review: "This excellent DVD contains 196 minutes of the great man in two documentaries. The first, filmed at his home, shows Segovia on camera throughout recounting his life and career.Camera angles show left & right hands clearly. His sound is utterly beautiful, and expresses the many tone colours of the guitar.Excellent DVD essential to any aficianado or player of the classical guitar.
This man has to learn hot to tune his guitar in first place. Just kidding. I never hear that stuff but sounds really beautifully. For many uTube player he a style for classic guitar . Guess Andres Segovia's last video of his live. Thanks who posted it!
Perhaps the confusion is a result of an error by the host. I believe this piece was named "Ballet" by Manuel Ponce. At least that's the title of the piece as it was told to Christopher Nupen by Segovia when they made the above film together (The host's clip.) A must have video by the way!
I am not kidding but Segovia was. He was full with pranks anyway. It is the same piece but composed by Weiss. Gangi was Marchione's teacher by the way. Good Luck
Thanks for the info I did think it was a bit baroque for ponce but his sonata clasico mirrors the classical style very so I thought he might have done something in the baroque style here.
You are wrong. This is a Ponce piece, Segovia was actually joking around attributing it to Weiss, just like he attributed Preludio in E to Bach. Gangi heard Segovia attribute it to Weiss, he assumed it was public domain, transcribed this piece off a Segovia recording and said he got it from a rare TAB of Weiss' --what a dork. So not to be mean or insulting, but this IS Ponce writing in the baroque style.
The style of fingering Segovia uses was originally developed years and years before his time. It was written down by the Great Sor in his book "Method for the Spanish Guitar"
A very lovely song from a master of the guitar. Although Andrés Segovia is not my favorite, that spot is reserved for Paco de Lucía, he was amazing. What he did for the guitar, bringing it into the spotlight and not letting it be obscure. Amazing. While I generally play Flamenco, I still have a deep respect for Segovia and love his music.
The greatest guitarist of all time. Nobody did more for the guitar as Segovia did. His legacy lives to this day with the plethora of students he taught and guided through the very difficult task of becoming a classical guitarist. Without Segovia, Rock n' Roll would be played with electric violins today. Trust me.

Segovia was the best. But for him, classical guitarists would not exist. He transcribed all the music in the first place, Bach etc.
Excellent!
alihobbit 3 years ago 2
@alihobbit
There were Classical guitarists before Segovia and surely there would be many even if he were not around...
please...the hyperbole does not help the Art of Classical guitar.
Let's just say he was great and an inspiration; but not go overboard.

Does anyone know where i can buy a copy of this piece? I have seached for Ponce and it comes up with zero.
As a struggling guitarist it has to be said that Mr Segovia was relaxed when playing in a similar way to Mr Hendrix. The soul is all important.
