Check out the eBook "Joe Meek's Bold Techniques 2nd Edition" by Barry Cleveland, chockablock with information about Meek's production techniques and his extraordinary contributions to recording.
It is interesting how Joe Meek's fascination with space, extraterrestrial life, non-human intelligences and the occult is often played down or somehow seen as the epiphenomena of his queer 'outsider' status when personally I think it is central to his psyche and the way he was able to absorb, integrate and communicate new sonic possibilities that existed far beyond the consensus reality of post-war Britain's musical landscape..great video!
Another classic case of "what might have been" Meek and Goddard's partnership was very original & productive but Joe's "control freakiness" hurt Geoff & others & bought things to an end far too soon. Meek had a creative technical genius decades before his time, so sad. Just imagine the Beatles & Tom Jones "under his wing" too! How different they could all have been with those spacey echoes, clangs, buzzes & twangs ...Imagine!
Great song! Just wonder how high Meek/Goddard would've gone if The Beatles wouldn't have been or have had less success. It's very rare that someone is saying or writing about this ''parallel universe'', The Beatles is a holy cow. I like The (early) Beatles but it's fun to think how it would been. =)
Though Joe Meek was "of his time" completely, when I hear this & the "New World" recordings I seriously wonder what it would have sounded like if he worked with some of the more "out-there" Psychedelic bands from the '67 UK's UFO/Middle Earth club scene. Imagine if Joe had dropped LSD at the 14 Hour Technicolour Dream, I wonder what sounds he would have heard in his head & put down on tape?! It could've pushed Meek-sound into a next phase of pure creativity without the standard Pop restraints!
Joe Meek at the controls! Avant-pop with a magickal flourish, who could ask for more! I always get annoyed that he is invariably excluded whenever the history of electronic music and record production is recounted (or he gets a brief passing mention)...In my opinion he was up there with Stockhausen, Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Boulez , Phil Spector, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Bob Moog et al & the fact he worked in the "pop" medium is irrelevant...the guy was a sonic alchemist!
This is actually my favourite Joe Meek track as it sums up everything about what Joe could do when he wanted a commercial hit and a bit of fun. A simply amazing production, speeded up, a great and interesting tune and a genius songwriter and pianist in Geoff Goddard with a sonic alchemist at the controls. geoff wrote Johnny Remember Me and plays the Clavioline in Telstar. Geoff sadly passed away on May 15th 1999. He is missed by many.
Geoff recorded 3 singles under his own name, best remembered for writing Johnny Remember me.He ended up washing up at Reading University which is why theire is a dedication to him on British Sea Power's first album - Scott and Simon from the band knew him there.
His character is featured in the recent film Telstar.

I played "i hear a new world" to my mates the other day - they laughed - but when you compare it to what was around at the time it was years ahead!
meek on acid in 67 would be total universal chaos!

I actually think Joe's accent rubbed off to Geoff....it's very clear on some of the lyrics sung.
