when thrust exceeds traction...here is what happens. some simple math/physics if not common sense could have foreseen this result. Hint...if you have NO experience with rockets...don't strap yourself to a pile of them.
Jesus! This guy will never be able to ride a regular luge again...will be too boring! I cannot believe he stayed with that thing(any straps???)with what must have been some G's on THAT run. WOW!!!!! Was he wearing an adult diaper(just in case!)?
Oh ok,then that's good!!!! Keep pushing the envelope. That video is awesome. I am familiar with the Aerotech reloadable motors. Im sure you're aware of this, but reloadable rocket motors are made that are bigger than G impulse. It would be cool if you strapped a couple k impulse motors on your sled. You could really get crazy with the speed, but may have control issues.
Actually the World Record for Rocketluge has never left the U.S.
What Joel, Roland, and Bob are all doing falls into a whole different power supply category. Yes, they are all luges, but that's where the similarity ends. Joel and Bob are both using jet engines and the speed record between them is always changing hands. Where as Roland is riding one heck of a beast with his harley power plant, pushing him well over the 100+ mark.
They are all great guys, and doing an amazing job!
This is crazy! I just cannot believe that riding The Big Red skate board in high school could bring you to strapping rockets on a luge and riding down a highway. You always were a little more adventurous than the rest of us.
The reason the rocketluge started to go out of control was caused by two problems. I had fired off all the rockets at once trying to capture a good still photo of it launching, and the thrust was over kill and I suddenly realized Houston we have a problem! The other issue was due to a design flaw which I have since corrected.
The take off is much smoother and straighter since the modifications, yet the acceleration is quite fast and tops out quickly! It will go around 100 m.p.h. from a dead start in the 1/8 to 1/4 mile. Once you reach the 3rd and 4th stages you realize your flying!
I raced streetluge once in 93 and after adding the rockets I did a few TV shows but that was it. I had a toy released in a kids meal and appeared in a few magazines. But as for racing with rockets I haven't did that yet. It's scheduled to be placed in our states 2nd largest general museum in 2008. If something comes up they agreed to let me get it out to play.
Yeah, this new board has never been featured on TV yet, but it was featured in the Top Gear magazine. I'm hoping to have it used in an action movie some day.
As for the swerving side to side, I've already repaired & modified the cause and now it launches straight as an arrow! Great visual effects that will close down a 4 lane 1/4 mile.

Thats why you fire in stages and not all at once. You get more or the same speed but keep traction.

Good stuff! It looks like something that would appear on the UK's Top Gear TV programme.
It seems wild to ride and tame - serving side-to-side as it went down the road...
