GAWDS this is AWESOME! I was listening to this unbelievable awesome stuff as a little kid -- & i grew up to become one of the most celebrated radio personalities in my entire region. ALEX ROCKED 'em ALL!
Fabulous performance! And so aware of the cameras and the angles. Brilliant close up of Alex around 2.10 with Zal's face moving softly behind. And later when the three are together, Alex singing and the other two mouthing like, well, bad boys--and Zal yawns wonderfully when Alex makes a serious point! I saw SAHB at Reading Festival in 1977 at the height--'framed' as Jesus on the cross. Then I saw him with a pick up band in early 1980s in Norwich, sad, watery eyed and on the way out
the first band i ever saw surpported by the pat travers band at trentham gardens in stoke i think it was 74 i was 14 saw many bands after but none ever matched that night rip alex
I saw these legends at Earls Court in 1973 supporting Slade - Alex took the place apart! Slade were really good - a decent band - but Alex was The Real Deal!
This is progressive rock, right? Only I looked on the Prog Archives site and they weren't there, but I've watched this and some other SAHB vids and they seem very psychedelic to me. And excellent, of course!
@r3tr0r0ck3r They are hard to classify,... yes, I consider them "psychedelic progressive fusion rock". They were in a league of their own, that's for sure.
Great! The first time I saw them was on ABC's "In Concert"-at the end of "Framed", he said "Never piss in the water supply!" Then they did a crushing cover of Sly Stone's "Dance to the Music"!
This is in my opinion the best SAHB song ever. Goosebumps indeed. Just listen to those keyboards at 3:39 - insane, off the scale! I was lucky enough to have met drummer Ted McKenna a few times back in the late 90s.
Still get goosebumps on goosebumps after all these years. The most under rated band of all time. They should be multi millionaires. Alex is is still my #1 influence and I'm an actor!
Words cant describe the impact this band hand on my own musical upbringing ... The SAHB were musical pioneers , every song and the characters within were larger than life ... I still mourn his passing but the music brings me back to that special place where still , 'Vambo Rules' in 'Hot City '!!!

How I pity the youngsters of today who missed it all and have nothing remotely similar to enjoy and experience. I remember broke up a fight at the Free Trade Hall with a few waves of his cane, what a guy !!
when people ask 'who are SAHB?' send them here... Jesus these guys were from another planet!! progressive music owes a hell of alot to SAHB!! RIP Alex
Give my compliments to historyman for this excellent quality vid. Alex was a genious, the consumate showman... the 'Ringmaster' to a sensational band ;)~ I love the way Zal sneeks around behind and beside Alex... hehe
Alex's incomparable showmanship and sense of theatre, coupled with the band's superb musicianship, always made their gigs really special and memorable events.
I saw the SAHB twice, one supporting the Who at Charlton Athletic and the other at the Liverpool Empire. The latter was the best gig I ever went to. Alex Harvey was superb. He is missed.
In-chuffing-credible! I saw this little gem on the Whistle Test DVD, and my jaw dropped to the floor, after that I found their version of "Delilah" which I think is better than Tom Jones's version, just a pity I was too young to appreciate them.
Absolutely, undeniably brilliant... Cleminson, Harvey, McKenna's and Glen perform with fluidity, and what a sound!...this is what today will never have...Tomorrow does indeed belong to them!
This reminds back in the 70's when I used to stay up late at night watching the Don Kerschiner rock concert. I think it was around '75 when i saw the performance of this great band. How I wish I can find a video of their concert. I am mesmerized by the guitar playing of the clown and the lyrics of Alex Harvey. For all of you who were not there, it's no big deal, but you're intellect must tell you that this was way ahead of it's time. Could this be pre-emo? Or just another goofy 70's band? Ha!
Thinking back to the big concert tours of the 1990s, like Zoo Tv and Voodoo Lounge, with their big screens and props, I can't help thinking SAHB were 20 years too early.

I rate this as one of the finest, if not THE finest, video performances ever. Everything about SAHB is sensational with the extraordinary time signatures and virtuoso playing, the lyrics, the theatricality of it all and above all the greatest rock frontman of all time. And they're scots - you cannae get better! This is what made me waste most of my life trying to be a rock star!!!!It was worth it - still in awe. Thanks Historyman and what an amazing story of the origin of this song.
It just occurred to me to check & see if any YouTube videos were out there. I am soooo blown away. Ever since I first saw SAHB on a live concert show back in the early 70's, I have been totally hooked. I got their SAHB Live LP when it first came out in '76? Now I have the same on DVD. When I want to really rock out on the road, I pop in this DVD & goto this song. They were so unique, so imaginative and so ahead of their time. Fan forever! RIP Alex! You have many more fans than you ever knew.

I don't know what it is about the guitar and bass at about 1:30, but it never fails to stop me in my tracks - not bad for a track I've been listening to for about 32-years.
brilliant version of my fav sahb song, one of the best pieces of rock ever, totally unique! just listen to the way the piano interacts with this beautiful guitar! thanks a lot, historyman, you are a very lucky guy! what did you serve them for breakfast, chef, to make them write a song like this?
The best band I seen at the "Old" Cleveland Ohio Agora Ballroom...and I seen a lot of bands there!! This has got to be one of the "Great" bands that never recieved it's just rewards!! Shame...God Bless you Alex...I for one Loved You and your "Sensational Band"!!!!
Simply amazing lyrics, serious and funny at the same time, and all those contrasting time signatures and very unpredictable changes everywhere...wow!!!!!!!!!
Alex and his band were awesome. Stories was one of the first albums I ever bought as a kid. My ipod is loaded up with almost all work. Just brilliant.
Wow That was awesome. I've loved this band for a long time . We had tickets in Toronto at Convocation Hall. It was suppossed to be Alex harvey and Manfred Mann, but Alex couldn't get through customs. Rush was the replacment Band.
I have known the band since Tear Gas days (pre-Alex). After one gig in Liverpool, they were staying at the hotel where I was working as a chef. We had a post-gig bash then I stayed over as I was working at 6am. I cooked their breakfast then went over to see if they were ok. I hadnt told them I was working there and they were blown away! They wrote the song for me on the next album. I still havent recovered 32 years on.
Saw them in '76 and blown away! Rediscovered them two years ago, thank God! Part of the fabric of my youth and I love them all over again. Vambo Rool!
Definitely in my top ten video performances of all time. Alex was the man, but what a great band too. He'd have been 72 today (5th Feb). Have a wee scotch on me auld buddy.
Thanks I can't get enough of this band. I got introduced to them on midnight special when they were on the Humble Pie and Foghat show. Seems like a million years ago.

Nice post. Clearly the most under-rated band of all time.
My 3 year old was dancing this tune and he is very particular about what he danced to!

Simply amazing lyrics, serious and funny at the same time, and all those contrasting time signatures and very unpredictable changes everywhere...wow!!!!!!!!!

Just discovered all these SAHB clips on Youtube and can't believe it--spent most of the seventies following them around in awe.

I never did get to see them live.
