Mr. Shinohara is a prideful man and a man of dignity. He said at the end ' I loss because I lacked the skill.' I would've gone frantic if an Olympic gold medal was robbed from me like that.
@adtd13 point here is though French guy initiated the throw Shinohara countered his throw by lifting his leg higher turning the French guy with his hands. Same thing happened to me when I tried an ochimata but win was awarded to the other guy rightfully. Thats why the Japanese Coach was so upset.....I'm afraid they robbed the gold from Shinohara.
@RayanFern Happened to me too my coach taught a sweet little side separation variation from a hip throw attempt and my opponent was awarded an ippon =/.
@jekizeuch: the control wasnt overtaken by shinohara.that´s right. but the throw, which shinohaara throwed is named uchi-mata-gaeshi, a counter technique which resulted in ippon.but the referee saw only yuko.i cant understand this, cause i`m a judo-referee too, but i think, ALL referees hadn´t the best view on the throw
mTW, by the way, after checking your profile, I would like some Katame Waza with Britney Spears too. I like your point, but the uchi-mata-gaeshi had nothing to do with Shinohara. I think. This sequence is similar to responding to morote-gari with tawara gaeshi. If you are caught , fall, but then roll your opponent over, should you get credit for the end result? Tough call, man. Tough call.

Actually, after watching the throw 100 times (thanks YouTube!) I would tend to agree with you. Before that, I was so sure that Shinohara had won. But I see Douillet doing the throw, no counter, and if nothing else, like another one said, Douillet ipponed himself. Tough call. Douillet landed on his back after all. I'm still on the fence. I admire that Shinohara did not blame the ref, like some viewers do: that's the mark of a true Judoka. It's a close call. Not a ripoff.
The fact that you cannot see Shinohara's uchimata-sukashi, does not mean that he in fact did not throw. I just simply mean that you are not properly trained. Take a look at the following video, and you will be embarrassed with what you said.

In this video, you wiil also see how dishonorable Doouillet is.
ippon by shinohara... judge made bad mistake. Too bad there's no instant replay in judo. I can see how refereeing judo is difficult but the other judges should've reversed the call.
@drgentlewolf : Big respect for the judge fast decision. This situation is so complex and misleading.
The shoulder of Shinohara hits the ground as a consequence of his opponent's uchimata (and Douillet is logically awarded an advantage, here a yuko). The japanese cannot score after this. Besides there is no technique used to make Douillet fall.
Lovely uchi mata sukashi, shame it wasnt given the correct score. Judo suffers terribly from bad refereeing. This just shows it happens at the highest level too.
I think its across all sport. If u watch soccer, u know its really common. Afterall its human to err. Sportmen will continue to feel being wronged at certain times, but it happens and move on. I'm no elite sportsman, but thats my take on the issue. =)
douillet is undisputably good, but that was definitely an error on the judge, shld have been a point to shinohara, in fact shinohara landed on his front when he did uchimata-sukashi and douillet landed on his back. fair play to the judge, its possible to have missed that cos u cant anticipate when there will be a throw. considering the errors in soccer, judo judging is already top class.
That was DEF an ippon. That corner judge had a perfect view of the sukashi. The fact is, Judo can be as corrupt on an international level as ice skating sometimes. It wouldn't be the first time the reffing was biased.
The Gold medal is definitely Shinichi Shinohara's. That's his Ippon for a very well executed Uchi Mata Sukashi. David Douillet won the 1997 World Championship final against him from a controversial penalty from a French referee!

I think a Zero decision would have been correct. Control was lost by Douillet and was not completely overtaken by Shinohara.
But very hard to decide even after a hundred views.

Stop! We're not cheaters!
In fact we don't care about Judo in France -__-'
But look maradona's hand, the cyclists using drugs, fakes by ice skating judges: sport is NOT fair.
Here Japan is the victim, tomorrow Japan could be the winner...
Trunkrillin 3 years ago
if you don't care about judo in france, then why don't you make douillet give the gold medal to shinohara? douillet didn't deserve it.
