About 10 years ago a terrible ship-wreck took place in november-stormed Baltic Sea. 1000 people drowned. In Finnish television we had a special program that only had a text, what happened with a sea view and this song was played.
Evening, a rosy, slow &transparent cloud Over th space dreamy &beautiful Th Moon sweetly appears in th horizon Decorating the afternoon like a nice damsel Who rushes &dreamy adorns herself With an anxious soul to become beautiful Shout all Nature to the Sky &to the Earth! All birds become silent to the Moon's complains &the Sea reflects its great splendor Softly, the shining Moon just awakes Th cruel missing that laugh cries Evenin, a rosy, slow &transparent cloud Over th space dreamy &beautifu
I'm a brazilian singer, i have heard this song by many singers, but elina really understand the essence of this song. Villa Lobos would be very happy with this interpretation.
Although I am a huge fan of Garanca's I found this simply aggravating. Mostly because of that awful arrangement that completely mischaracterized the music and is, in the words of several other commentators, "mushy" in the worst possible sense, but also because of her Portuguese pronunciation which is totally incomprehensible (it might just as well have been Latvian - maybe it was LOL). In contrast, Kathleen Battle's Portuguese is absolutely perfect. For comparison listen to Bidú Sayão
@theringisking Funny that you should say that. This version of the song in nice but I heard that the composer Villa-Lobos himself said that the best version of this song that he heard was that with Laurindo Almeida on guitar and Salli Terri on vocals. I myself adore this version, especially Salli Terri's vocals. They are incredible in their expressiveness and beauty. By the way Salli Terri was a mezzo-soprano.
Her voice is incredible and very expressive, as the tears run down my cheeks. It is really a song to nature, and I don't mind the mushy orchestration because it shows off her musicality even more; she's someone very special, I think. She takes the cavatina a bit too fast, though. She should have listened to Victoria de los Angeles. The voice is so fascinating in color though, really quite out of the ordinary.
Very beautiful, but give me one good reason, only one, to use this poor version for string orchestra, which adds absolutely nothing to the original scoring for cello ensemble. Who was the genius that had this ¨$*#¨&@ of an idea?
I repeat: Your interpretation is perfect. Its nuances are accurate ... the vocalise is wonderful. Villa-Lobos, probably wrote this piece thinking about it. Not tire of listening. Congratulations Elina.
carandelothiel: Late one rosy cloud slowly and transparent. About space, dreamy and beautiful! Surge at infinity the moon softly, Decorating the afternoon, what sweet maiden What are preparing the beautiful and dreamily In the soul desires to be beautiful He cries to the heavens and the earth all of Nature! Shut the birds to their sad laments E reflects the sea all his wealth ... Soft light of the moon awake now The cruel longing to laugh and cry! ...
I loveeeee this aria. Does anybody know where can I find the english or spanish translation to the lyrics? Im singing this next year and I want to do a good job :)

I'm a very big fan of Portuguese, e realmente, para mim esta é a língua mais bonita do mundo!! when I heard this interpretation, I already knew the lyrics of this Bachiana, as I've sang it myself...and i adooore the text...I just wanted to hear Elina's interpretation, and it's a pity that nobody wrote anything about it :|
Amigos, you should be proud that somebody like Elina Garanca sings in your language with so much professionalism.. I would be very happy if I were you....
I am brazilian and its not "blablabla" just a few words are quite indecipherable but the pronounced of a lot of words are wrong. However i only understand what her say with de lyrics without its nearly impossible.
Wooof! Much too dark for my taste... The vocalise was elegant, but the part with lyrics was like just "blablablablabla". Sure, she's a foreigner, but she should at least have tried to understand the meaning of the words, instead of blurting them out like that! Renee Fleming also has poor pronounciation, but all of the words she utters have meaning behind them, Also, the only foreigners who come vaguely close to pronouncing an acceptable portuguese are Victoria de los Angeles and Anna Moffo.
Oh Gawd, she can't pronounce Portuguese! Don't worry OlgaSofia, we all know that mispronunciation of Portuguese is warranted by a death sentence so we will go find her and shoot her.
Hmmmph, how dare she even try to sing in Portuguese. Such cheek.
OK. Mispronounciation is one thing, "blablablabla I don't care what the lyrics mean" is another. She's a famous singer, internationally accaimed. She should at least put some effort into it! Singers work hard to pronounce Spanish, Russian and Czech, AND mean absolutely every word they sing (again, Renee Fleming is an example)... so why not Portuguese?!?
Its not Bach, its Heitor Villa Lobos, INDEED a brazilian composer, and i as a brazilian and lover of classical music cry all times with this aria, its perfect, this kind of work, fills me with joy and pride. By the way the "Bachianas Brasileiras" are entirelly devoted to Bach, and we all agree with me, the work of him is quite incredible.
I passionately adore the first part, and hate teh second part. It's as if she's in a hurry to get the lyrics out of her system, finish the recital, and go to the bathroom. Too rushed!!
Certainly, dear Nication, that it not Bach: but this music is devoted Bach - also, as well as the others 8 bachianas. From here and them appellations.
Have been listening to all the different versions of this aria posted here on Youtube, and to me this is by far the best . Technically perfect, sang with awe and sincerity in a rich strong voice, taking notes high and low with total ease and seemingly effortless. Emotions running from wonderful tenderness to the most passionate. What an amazing recording.
I have to agree w/ u! She´s wonderful. However when she sings in Portuguese, it doesn´t seem at all!!! I barlely understand the Portuguese language . (3: 80 min) I never will forget Bidu Sayão voice!
So Bidu Sayão! I just wrote that Mrs. Garanca can´t pronouce the Portuguese words w/ a good accent! It´s not so clear! Oh well... Portuguese is not easy when ur not a native.
You're right. I couldn't stop laughing with some of the words she says (for example in : Queixumes, the first u is mute! She says it!). But she does have a lovely voice. It's a shame she has so many fonetic mistakes!
@YvesGingras Brazilian portuguese is not Italian, and knowing how to say correctly the lyrics in portuguese is so important as knowing it in French or in any other language, no matter how rare it is. I believe she sings very well in Italian, French and German, but that music is in Brazilian portuguese, just as it's author. Italian, French and German are not the only languages in the world.
@YvesGingras Actually, there are lots of nice pieces in Brazilian portuguese for singers, but people usually prefer Italian songs - for its incredible didactic – and German songs – for they are usually very complex and challenging. But every singer, since the beginning of their studying, are taught that good pronunciation is important, no matter in what language they attempt to sing, for people to understand at least something of what they are saying. It's about knowing well the music.
A voz é linda, escura, meio pesadona, "russa".
In my opinion as a non-professionel, Elina Garanca unites many qualities in her voice:
She does not only have a very warm timbre in the mezzo as well as in the soprano theme, but also has a silvery brightness in her voice that makes her outstanding.
Beautiful voice!

It's ok, but the piece was written for a soprano, not a mezzo. Also for an ensemble of 8 celli. What is this mess accompanying her?
For the definitive version of this piece, listen to the De Los Angeles recording conducted by the composer.

Mas, nao custa nada escutar V.Kasarova,C.Bartoli, T.Berganza,M.Horne,G.Simionatto e muitas outras...
