Why is it that hispanics are more than 50% of L.A.'s population yet only represent about 6% of UCLA's student body? The reason is that hispanics don't value education, they are not upwardly mobile. Hispanics are pretty lowly and primitive people, unlike whites and Asians.

Latinos are underepresented in higher education because they don't value education like whites and Asians do - that's the ONLY reason. It has NOTHING to do with poverty. Consider the Vietnemese "boat people" who came to the USA in the late 70's (about 850,000 total). They were dirt poor w/ no money and yet they and their children are some of the highest achievers academically and professionally in the USA (in one generation).

Even with affirmative action, latinos still fail.

Latinos in the U.S. do value education. Why larger numbers of Latinos do not attain degrees from institutions of higher education does not have to do with a lack of valuing education. If your argument was true, then the Chicano Movement and various other organizations would not exist in the United States that promote the attainment of higher education to Latin@s in the U.S. This proves that Latinos in the U.S. do in fact value education.

Immigrant Latin@ youth actually does better than their 2nd and 3rd generation counterparts because the immigrant students tend not to take their opportunities for granted like most Americans do.

About the Vietnamese population in the U.S. having a higher attainment of higher education, we also have to acknowledge that they were given a lot of help by the government as refugees. Also, because they were immigrants, the youth had a strong drive to attain an education.

In South L.A. which is 62% hispanic, the schools there spend double what they spent in 1960 per student (adjusted for inflation), yet the hispanic high school dropout rate is 62% in that area. Why? The Vietnemese boat people (mostly peasants) were fleeing the re-education camps after the war. These were farmers, and shop keepers.

The difference between Asians and hispanics is that Asians value education (they worship it) whereas hispanics don't. It's a cultural defect which is widespread in Latin America.

Empirical evidence ---> Hispanics have a 56% national high school dropout rate. In L.A. County, hispanics dropout at 59%. Most of the others are just "pushed through".

Read Herman Badillo's book who writes about hispanics and their lack of interest in education (check Amazon). Another hispanic guy wrote a book called, "Clipping their own wings" - it's about the same topic ie. hispanics don't value education.

NO DOUBT the drop rates of latinos in the U.S. Is horrible but not all latinos have the same outcome. Why? Cubans fair alot better in education than say Mexicans or Central Americans. Actually in a recent report, 94% of latino families place education as their priority, ahead of health covereage and immigration. I actually go to speak with Eduardo Caravantes about his book, and I asked the same question, "What empirical evidence do you have?" his reply that the book is a social critique.

"Subtractive Schooling" by Angela Valenzuela and "The Elusive Quest For Equality: 150 years of Chicano Education" Although I don't agree with EVERYTHING these books have to say, they do offer some good insight. I would like to ask you some questions., if don't value education, why are there ANY latinos in college? Why do some latinos make it and others don't?

People like you actually hurt Mexicans themselves by defending them here. Cesar Chavez would agree with me. He once said, "the enemy of organized U.S. labor is an endless flow of illegal labor". He protested the illegals coming into the USA.

Mexicans should stay home and join EZLN and fight for change in Mexico instead of coming here and undermining the U.S. labor class. I'm no commie, but I do respect Marcos and his struggle in Chiapas (and for keeping the fight in Mexico).
