  • This was my first roller coaster.<3 My second was the Mamba hahaha. :3

  • I wish I got to ride it. Why did they take it apart?

  • Those were the two best rides at Worlds of Fun. I never really understood why they tor down the Orient Express. I remember when that thing first opened. I was scared shitless. When the ride ended, my sister and I both started raving about it and how much we loved it. That was the best ride the park had. It's just too bad they tore it down.

  • I think I was about 9 or 10 when I rode it.-had family in souix city and we all took a trip. My uncle told me that when you are at the peak of the highest loop then you could see kansas city(the other half) and he was right, but at the time unfortunattly my eyes were closed!

  • let me tell you, it wasnt a ride for the weak! ...i loved this rollercoaster, although painful as is was

  • I wish i could of been alive then...

  • this was my first coaster ever. it broke my fears of riding them. I miss it.

  • @Rhinoryan67 That ride may be bumpy but that ride was history! 1 of the best rides there back in the 80's

  • They should have taken out timber wolf. It's old and bumpy

  • I loved this ride... I remember the barnstormer too. I hadn't seen video of that ever and I haven't seen that damn thing in well over 20 years.

  • :'( what year did they end the ride

  • First roller coaster I've ever ridden...if only it still stood. I can only remember parts of it, like the beginning hill.

  • I can see why people say that this inspired the KI Vortex :)

  • I live five minutes fom there and rode it constantly as a kid. The view of the park will never be the same as I feel it was a staple for KC and the sound of the chains as u walked into the park I will hear forever. For those who never rode it , it was AWESOME. Not the tallest or fastest but something about this coaster was addictive! RIP ..... Orient.

  • dude y did u cut out the loops

  • they still use the loading and unloading box for haloween haunt.....something with a vampire but anyway they can not rebuild it without taking out the spinning dragons which has in fact many mechanical errors as well. every other time I go to wof it is shut down or very very long line. the new gum tree is either on the wall to the patriot or a tree near the mamba loading area. haha

  • First Coaster I Ever Rode!!! Awesome

  • BRING BACK THE ORIENT EXPRESS and get rid of that crap ride spinning dragons!

  • The Orient's sister coaster, Loch Ness Monster, is still in operation today at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Excellent maintenence is always what will keep a coaster alive.

  • The Orient Express was great. They should have kept it.

  • i miss this coaster so much. it was so awesome. sad day when they demolished it. the patriot is nice but nothing will ever replace the express

  • Someone tell me why they tore it down??

I never got to ride that one! Never knew there was an orient express!!

    I noly ride the mamba

  • @onlyyouwould14 Cedar Fair tore it down becuz it was 20+ yrs old and was costing alot of money to maintain it. it derailed too becuz they weren't keeping up on it. i saw it when it derailed nobody died just alot of people had whip lash.

  • @zac613 Oh shit

  • Man, it makes me sad that they demolished the Orient Express. It was one of my first roller coasters, along with the Mamba, and with it being gone, I find it really hard to justify going back to Worlds of Fun. *sigh*

    RIP Orient Express :(

  • I unfortunetly never got a chance to ride this, now they have the shitty spinning dragons there in its place...

  • this awesome monstrosity was my all time favortie steel coaster from 1984 until I rode SROS at SFNE in 2000. I cant tell you what it was that hooked me on the Orient, either: Shock Wave (SFOT) was more intense, Texas Cyclone (ASTRO) was more harrowing and Kong (Vallejo) literally took my breath away (lol stupid asthma) but none of them held a candle to this. RIP O.E. thanks for the good times.

  • when did this close and y? it looks amazing!

  • @all0shall0perish0guy I think it closed like 5 years ago i think.. idk but it closed because it got too shaky and it was too expensive to repair it so they tookit down

  • This was my favorite roller coaster out of the whole park.

  • Okay suzyne, youre right, Cedar Fair does not suck......YOU SUCK, for not having all of your facts straight! haha! Orient Express is gone and no one died on it, just injured. Also Cedar Fair took down the first ride to use a Kamikaze Kurve element, so yeah I'd say that sucks pretty bad. Anyway spending money to rebulid it would be expensive but the ride was popular and they knew it, so it would not be a bad investment. Much better than selling for scrap.

  • the Orient Express was taken care of but 4 people did die but the orient Express is still running in Old Orchard Beach, Main at Palace Playland worlds of fun was goin to melt it for metal but Palace Playland wanted to buy it and it is still running today so dont say Ceder fair sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @suzyne no its gone i think your mistaken. pm me a websight or something to show if im wrong

  • @suzyne > You are mistaken...the Orient Express coaster at Palace Playland is not the same as the Orient that ran at Worlds of Fun. The one at Playland is a kiddie coaster, and doesn't even compare to the Orient Express at Worlds of Fun.

  • That rollercoaster brings back soooo many memories, although I haven't been on it in over 20 years.

  • After viewing videos of Ninja at SFSL, I think that is probably the closest a person can now get to riding something like OE. Not a copy at all but at least a very wild looping etc crazy Arrow coaster from the mid 80's that still stands. Vekoma had to step in and finish it since Arrow BK'ed during it's build but it's an old crazy and wild Arrow designed coaster for sure. I hope to finally hit SFSL this summer and ride Ninja - can't wait! I agree that WOF should rebuild OE in it's old spot. RIDE!

  • @SamusLife > I would agree...There is also Demon at Great America which is similar to OE. They recently tore down Scream Machine at Great Adventure...another classic Arrow looper is now gone, makes me sad. I am so grateful I got to enjoy the Orient for many years...it was my first, and started my love affair with roller coasters.

  • What is so wrong about riding a roller coaster with chewing gum in your mouth?

  • @casinobowling

You could end up swallowing your gum while enjoying the thrill of the ride (and swallowing gum is not as harmless as some people think).

  • Oh Okay Thanks for the replies! Man why do i miss out on cool stuff? It was terrible enough that I missed out on Zambezi Zinger (one friggin inch too short to ride in 1997, one inch! can you believe the luck?) but the fact that i missed out on the Orient Express kills me man. Of all the coasters i have seen there was always something about the Orient Express that impressed me more than any other coaster. the original spot is still vacant, i wish by some crazy miracle they could rebuild it....

  • Great video! Love the footage of the Henrietta and Barnstormer!

  • Can anyone tell me if there was a tunnel before the lift hill? I thought i read somewhere that there was one and it had an illuminated sign with the rides logo on it inside the tunnel. Oh another question, what exactly was the gum tree? I hear alot about it but I never saw it. Thanks!

  • @Bonecracker2389 there was a small hill in the tunnel with a lage sign above the track

  • Yes there was about a 1,000 foot tunnel that you dropped into on the way to the lift hill, it had the OE "dragon" logo over the entrance to the tunnel.

The Gum tree was a tree that was literally killed because everyone would put their gum on it before riding it was right outside the queue house, it was gross.

  • I was so happy I got to ride this one before it was torn down.

  • Oh man!

I have been talking about riding that coaster for 20+ years...

    SO SAD it's gone =(

  • i so remeber this like it was yesterday

  • r.i.p. orient express

  • This was my first roller coaster! I went on it when I was really young and I remember I was always scared to ride coasters after that. Lol.

  • Yes, was a great coaster. I remember I was too scared to ride it even when I was tall enough. Finally one summer I got on it and it blew my mind. The gum tree was too cool. The logo was the scary but awesome!!

  • why did they tear it down?

  • im sad i never got to ride it....

  • @eblekj you would of loved it. i road it when i was 12

  • Hey Horkslair, thats awesome that you went on the first public ride on Orient Express! I wish I was around in 1980 to see the ride when it was brand new.

  • this was literally the best ride at worlds of fun before they tore it down.

  • Hey Shane... When did you take segments of this video? I saw the Barnstormer in there (plane ride) it's been gone for years!

  • I agree with Bonecracker on this one. Orient Express was a legend. I still remember watching them test the ride in 1980 and I was on the first ride they let the public go on in 1980. It was the first coaster with interlocking loops and the barrel roll (after loop 2).

It's a shame that it's gone. I'll have to recreate it for RT3 like I did for RT2. Pity that WOF let such an iconic coaster fall into disrepair like they did.

  • if you want to make really realistic rollercoasters on the computer, try "no limits". trust me, it rocks :)

  • The Orient Express didnt suck. Cedar Fair entertainment sucks. They did not maintain the ride properly and as a result it got trashed to hell. If Hunt Midwest still owned the park then im pretty sure the ride would not have derailed in 1999 and it would probably still be up and running today. The Orient was one of the most unique coasters in the world and removing it was one of the most stupid and careless decisions ever made in the history of WOF.On that note, yes im sure the ride was very rough

  • @Bonecracker2389 There is another coaster fairly simular, the Lochness Monster @ Busch Gardens in Willaimsburg, Virginia. the problem with the Orient Express was not necessarily lack of maintainin the coaster, the problem is getting parts for the coaster. My wife works at Busch Gardens in Willaimsburg, and I know very well what is involved in keeping the Lochness Monster functional....the country is scoured for spare parts...not easy to get.

  • man this was my 1st roller coaster. my dad snuck me on when i was only 3 years old haha (there was no guy with a measuring stick)

  • The last time I was at WOF was spring of 1987 and I rode The OE four times in a row. It was simply the best coaster ever. I was scared to death the first time ridding it on the first big drop. Looked like it went straight down from in the cars.

  • do they still have this ride???

  • No it kept malfunctioning and so in result they had to tear it down. Also one day two cars from it derailed on the back mid way through after a brake section

  • You have to be thinking of another Orient Express coaster. This was the Orient Express at Worlds of Fun. It and the Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg were the only two coasters in the world with interlocking vertical loops, although Orient Express had also the Kamikaze curve element you can find on rides like Vortex at Kings Island (The section from the top of the lift hill to the entrance of the first vertical loop actually reminds me of Vortex).

  • jasonrocks, the timber wolf was made of wood, not the orient

  • I miss this ride!!!

  • Orient Express...what's there to say, will forever be missed. Gum Tree...it had to go with it, that sucked! Chicken Exit...why don't they make those anymore, lol!!! Since being owned by Cedar Fair since the mid 90's I sure expected more from them but they just let WOF/OOF go down a hill IMO. Now with the times they want to sell our park, hopefully we can get somewhere than just being a rinky dink park, but hey I still have fun taking my kids there.

  • prowler is the shit

  • I never got to go on this ride. My two older sisters did back in 1995 but i was too short to go on it at the time. Then in 1998 i almost went on it but did not have enough time cuz i went on Timber Wolf instead. Then when i went in 1999 the ride was shut down cuz it came off the track and that was the last time i went to worlds of fun. Grrrrrr i wish it was not taken down.

  • what was that airplane ride in the beggining. is that the zuma. how old os this video?

  • @BL24R the airplane ride was called barnstormer. the snoopy bounce sits in it's place now. and the timberwolf uses the same station and some parts of the land where the screamroller/EXT once stood.

  • I wish I was alive to see the orient express

  • me too well i was alive but to youngt

  • That was my first ever roller coaster i was there on the last day and im 13

  • this may sound stupid but ive heard rumors that they took this out cause it was extremely dangerous and someone died. idk. someone reply plzzzz

  • Hell no. They took it out because it was over 30 years old and kept breaking down. The only major accident nobody died, just minor injuries. The two back cars derailed on the loop or something.

  • They derailed on the upswing into the final brake run into the station.

  • The Orient Express was 23 years old when they removed it.

  • I typed the wrong key, had caught it after writing that comment but didnt fix it

  • idk if it was exteremly dangerous it just derailed so they took it out and put in spinning dragons idk if anyone died but someone died on the timberwolf a long ass time ago

  • someone really died on the timberwolf! shit! i knew that thing looked sketchy! lol ive been going here 3 times a year since i was like 5 and i never knew that i never rode the orient before they took it out. i was to young. damn this thing looked fun though!

  • long ass time ago the girl was trying to switch seeats with her friend.

  • no thats a stupid rumor ur right they took it out cuz it was there a while and it was 2 roller coasters so they put the stupid spinning dragon in.

  • when i used to ride those roller coasters as a kid i only focused on holding on for dear life!

  • good memorie with that coaster!

  • Was checking out this roller coaster... as it was the one that started my love affair with steel roller coasters! So sad to hear it's gone. What where they thinking?

  • when they took it out they put a new one in its place called patriot

  • the patriot is just like a one track version of the roller coaster "dueling dragons" in universal studios in orlando.

  • actually they put in spinning dragons they put in patriot cuz they had extra room

  • I know. I see other Arrow coasters still operating(Vortex @ KI/Loch Ness @ BG) and it makes me sad that the Orient was demolished. Even more sad that WOF didn't want to tear it down...Cedar Fair Inc made the decision not to refurbish it :(

  • i remeber riding this, then immediately jumping back in line to go again. then on my second time through, some kid behind me turned around in hie seat (i didnt see this ... i was told this afterwards) and it set off some sort of alarm on the ride and it stopped in the middle of the tracks right as it was about to make a loop. i thought it was kinda cool, but that was the last time i got to ride it and i didnt even get a full ride :(

  • I would like to download a copy of this video if anyone has it...

  • I cannot believe they tore down the orient express. I used to have a blast riding it as a kid. RIP OE........... Unbelieveable....

  • Just going down memory lane and came across this. "Orient Express" was the coolest coaster of it's time. I am proud to say I rode it in the early 80's, was not disappointed and liked it better than Kings Islands "The Beast". I wish I still had the ride's Shirt I bought after I rode it. Collectors Item I'm sure. Happy 79th Birthday Ron "Genius" Toomer May 31

  • RIP Orient express

  • That thing looks better than the patriot i wonder why they didnt just renew it??

  • The Orient was an amazing ride. In its final years, the park was paying insane amounts of $ in maintaining this coaster, not to mention the company who made the trains/parts went bankrupt. So, I guess the park weighed the options and the Orient lost the battle. Patriot is a fitting relacement though, as it is also a great coaster(but the Orient will never be replaceable in my opinion).

  • ya same here

  • Actually, Patriot did not replace Orient Express. Spinning Dragons is on the spot the coaster stood on, and I think it was not a good replacement. RIP Orient Express!

  • Yeah...I was just saying that the Patriot compares to Orient in that it is now the only steel looping coaster at the park(boomerang doesn't count b/c it sux!). The Orient Express offered a great ride then...Patriot offers it now :)

  • Spinning Dragons is not on the spot where the Orient Express was. The spot is still vacant as of 2009 with no replacement announced.

Since they just built the Prowler it will be probably be a few more years until we findout what will take the spot of the Orient Express.

  • The Patriot is where Orient used to stand. The loading station is still there about 200 feet away from where you load Patriot. The ravine isn't being used, but the lift hill for the Patriot is on the same ground as the Orient.

  • Patriot and OE have two completely separate plots of land, and do not overlap in any way.

  • @insaneiaq > I think you are mistaken about that. The spot where the Orient once stood is still vacant...you can still see the loading station and supports when you ride Spinning Dragons.

  • i thought that patriot wasnt that good the mamba is the best!

  • I'm sure the scrap yard was glad to get all that metal.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I haven't been to WOF since they took out the Zinger..but I have fond fond memories of riding the Orient..and teaching their crew a thing or two about faster loading..My daughter totally loved watching the POV!

  • Holy smokes, check out the interlocking loops! I've never seen anything like that before... it's a shame it's gone. As a total coaster junkie I would've KILLED to try something like that.

  • Man that thing was a rough ride. My only trip to WOF was I believe the last year they ran the OE. The rails didn't quite look parellel at the top of the drop to me... but I rode it twice that day and my head and neck took awhile to forgive me. I remember it breaking down twice while I was there that day and I just knew that thing was near the end of its life.

  • I forgot to mention how bogus I think it is that Worlds of Fun tore down such a great coaster in the Orient Express and then chose to add insult to injury with building the, in my opinion, pathetic excuse for a coaster Spinning Dragons. Apparently I'm far from alone on this having read many many similar comments about Spinning Lameness. It doesn't deserve a place at WOF. It would totally rock if they used that space to lengthen Patriot to twice or more it's current length.

  • I totally agreee!! I never got to ride Orient Express but yeah Spinning Dragons seems lame compared to it!

  • agree the spining dragon is lame. i never got to ride the O.E eaither when it was out i was to short to ride it =-[it sucks :P

  • Cool Worlds of Fun history. Thanks for such a great vid. Yet another coaster I would've loved to have ridden at Worlds of Fun had last year not been my first time at the park. Luckily I was able to ride Corkscrew at Knott's Berry Farm before it was torn down and sold to Silverwood up in Idaho. I'd have loved to ridden Corkscrew at WOF when they converted it to a stand up for a short while. My brother takes his kids to Silverwood yearly and they love riding Corkscrew. XD

  • i remember the growl! and the bubblegum tree. and the chicken exit. god, i loved that ride.

  • I used to work on the OE back in 85 and then again in 95. The last two cars did derail on the final upswing into the break run in July of 1999. The reason was metal fatigue, but no one was seriously injured as the cars hung off the track and to my knowledge didn't strike anything. I don't remember the growl effect, but I remember the bubble gum tree. The Zinger is up and running in Columbia and is now called Broca. It was my favorite coaster for years.

  • Does anyone remember the growl sound effect when you left the station? the bubble-gum tree that you passed while waiting in line to get on? Sorry, I saw this and it brought back memories. The Orient will always be my fave coaster...but, I must admit that Patriot is a great ride.

  • IT fell off the track? I know the last few seasons it was showing its age, was broken down a lot. I thought the only accident was in the early 90's when a train collided with another in the final brake run? Still, it was my fave ride, and so grateful I got to enjoy it for many years before it was scrapped. Sucks that the Zambezi Zinger is still up and running in Mexico(i think), and the great Orient Express couldn't be saved. OMG, the EXT Roller!! I remember it being stand-up LOL

  • R.I.P We Will Miss You

  • I think they built the Patriot where the Orient used to be. Either that or the Spinning Dragons. I think one of those two were built in the space where the Orient used to be.

Why did it get torn down?

  • it fel off the track rember

  • It may have been painful, but it was still fun.

    I'll always miss you Orient!

  • I wonder what roller coaster in the future will be built on the space that was the Orient Express???

  • I loved the Orient Express! I rode it for the first time when I was 9 years old. I only got to ride it for two years before they took it down! I was so upset.

P.S: What is the name of this song??

  • It was my first roller coaster!

  • That's some old fashioned, scratchy home video there. Looks like it's from the early 80s, which is when I first rode the OE. It was my first roller coaster with loops. I was scared to death, but got up the nerve and then wanted to do it again and again. Think I was about 11 years old and it was 83 or 84. I was barely tall enough for it. Was so said to hear they tore it down a few years back. BTW, that initial climb, slow roll, then drop was something I'll never forget.

  • reminds me of good times.

  • Wow! The park was an entirely different world back then!!! Definitely alot more fun than the corporate remodeled landfill that it has become! Thanks for sharing!

  • cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • Excellent video, brings back great memories, thanks!

  • It took me years to give up the nerve to ride the Orient, and a few more years after my first traumatizing experience... I'm glad I was able to enjoy it before they scrapped it.

I wish I had gotten to ride the Screamroller, though. when I was 8, my mother tried to get me on it, but I was too scared. A year later, the Timber Wolf stood in its place.

  • That logo for the Orient Express was fuckin' bad-ass. So is the Timber Wolf's.

  • I miss those days at worlds of fun, it's great to see vids of the oreint express, I miss it.

  • memorabilia!

  • i miss this. but didnt it wreck off the track or sumthin? i thot i remember hearing that

  • Yea i think it did...

  • they took that out for the gay spining dragons thos jerks

  • They also put in Patriot, which is awesome =)

  • RIP Orient Express.

    You're dearly missed.

  • Thank you so much for this you brought back a great memory :)

  • I also wanted to add that the reason this will always be my favorite roller coaster is because this was the very first roller coaster that I ever went on, and it's sad that they took it down.

  • Thank you for posting this up. I miss riding the orient express so much. This was me and my cousin's favorite roller coaster. I was so mad when the took the orient express down. That will always be my favorite roller coaster.

  • Wow...that just brought a tear to my eye...LOOK AT THE BARNSTORMER IN THAT ONE SHOT !!!!Thanks so mch for uploading this great tune too A+++++

  • Watching this video of the Orient is like watching the old home movie of a family member who's passed on. It's bittersweet. Oh if I could only ride it one more time...

  • This was my favorite roller coaster ever, back in the day it was in high school my friend was running the ride and she let us jump ahead of the HUGE line and we got on and ! WE GOT STUCK ! HAHAHA. But damn I really miss it, the Patriot doesn't do it for me. and that spinning dragon seems a bit lame?

  • Hey Shane - Tim Cole from San Diego here. How's it going?

  • P.S.: Ever since Hunt sold it to Cedar Fair WOF lost it Spirit and Cedar fair just see's as a way to make another buck.

  • I was born in '91 but I somehow "miss" the old worlds of fun like "Ski Hi's" or the stand up Scream Roller.

  • Thank you for this video! I have searched high and low for video of the Orient Express and none have this quality. That was my first roller coaster (rode it the year it was built). I always wanted to go back and ride it again but they tore it down before I could make the 10 hour drive....anyhoo - this is great.

  • That was fantastic. Thanks for uploading it.

  • Thanks for bringing back some great memories. Schools in KC used to go in session a Week before my city's so a friend and I went once the week before school started and there was hardly anyone there. Nothing tops the sheer joy of getting off the ride and going straight back on with no line. I love the way the tress are everywhere, you really get disoriented (No pun int.)

We rode the Orient Express in every car, same with the Timberwolf and Zambezi Zinger (No seatbelts!).

  • Absolute great video of OE, on-ride and off. Very rare footage of it, I searched alot of sites for footage this good. Most intresting is the song though. I guessed A-Ha and found out I was right. I downloaded at I-tunes and though I never heard it before I can't stop listening to it.

  • Glad you liked the song. A-ha is my favorite band, and even though they are considered "one hit wonders" here in the states, they actually 6 or 7 really great albums! This song comes off of "Scoundrel Days"
