Well it did work and the economic boom of China despite the lesser number of young workers was obviously the result. Today the policy is much less brutal. Thanks to an increase of living standards, a better education and a decrease of opposition against it. Economicly successful chinese are even able to buy the right to have a third child, thus helping poorer families to take care of their one child.

What this video is failing to tell us is, that shortly after its introduction the one child policy was altered to a two child policy with the goal to stabilise the population.

The forced abortions are tragic and wrong, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. But then again who's fault is it, that the woman got deliberately or irresponsibly pregnant for the fourth time? Surely not the governments'.

Many people want to see the economic strain caused by a decreased number of young workers as proof for the failure of this policy, but they ignore, that the young will be old one day and do not realise, that an ever increasing population would finally lead to overshooting. And the price for that is much higher.

The problem of gender preference has nothing to do with the one child policy. That and their rejection of the policy just shows how immature and uninformed the masses are.

That's correct. Wealthy people can show off with their 4 or 5 kids and the fines help the poor to support their one child. The one child gets a better start, thus preventing mega-slums like in Africa with big families living a miserable life in tin-huts. And the rich families become a little bit less rich because the inheritance is divided among more people. Some people think it's unfair that the rich can have more babies. It sounds fair enough to me.

Things have changed a lot. Now thanks to the one child policy poverty has decreased so far, that more people are educated and therefore are having less children anyway. What's more: Rich people can just pay for the right to have a third or even more children. This helps to fight poverty even more. (As a side effect there is less left to inherit for each one of the numerous heirs)

Paradoxically, when you increase the infant survival rate you decrease the birth rate. Simply they get fined, the cost of the fine varies

You can have more than 1 child if:

- You're not Han Chinese (there's about 56 minorities)

- You pay the fine

- Are a farmer in a rural area (farming families need more hands)

- Both parents are single children

It's meant to keep the over populated areas from becoming more over populated. So fines in Beijing will be high, and in small areas low.

China needs actually a birth stop for the next fifty years. China´s population will grow to 1,458,421 in 2030 and than they will fall to 1,408,846 in 2050 according to UNFPA. The One Child Policy had little effects. But better than nothing.

1. My first chinese friend had a older sister in the 1970's. The sister died of hunger when still a child (no economic miracle at this time. Some area were very poor).

Truly this was an abomination from the beginning and I remember seeing a documentary shortly after this rule was implemented, very similar to this, but without stats. Women were being forced to abort their babies or their babies killed shortly after birth. The numbers probably are far below what truly happened. And where do people think they get their food from, farmers and rural labourers. Stop and think about that. God help us all in the end and those people too.
