The brits owned comedy during the 60's-90's. About the 90's the Americans took over and England have produced hardly any good comedy programs, only QI really springs to mind now. back in the goold old days we had As time goes by, open All hours, Prorridge, Keeping up Appearances, Only Fools and horses, Dad's Army, The Two Ronnies, Morecambe and Wise, Ever Decreasing Circles, Outside Edge. These are my favourites. Thank you David Croft. King of Comedy writing.
@TheWhipidhinio All in the Family was well written though of course based on a British original. Mash could be excellent, too, yet "Fawlty Towers" (also from the '70s) remains more consistently brilliant than just about anything else in the television era. (We can forgive John Cleese and Connie Booth all those jokes at the expense of the Spanish.)
@kinksfan1956 All in the Family was brilliant, & it credits the Brit show Til Death Do Us Part in its end credits. I'd like to see it! Fawlty Towers is fabulous! You forgive John Cleese as we forgive Carroll O' Connor! :) :) As for M*A*S*H*, it has no more inconsistencies (with cast names & other such details) than Are You Being Served, & both recycle old jokes ad nauseum, but Alan Alda's arrogance & egocentricity kept the series from shining as brilliantly as it could have. :P
"Are You Being Served?" was such a great show...I became a big fan when my PBS station started airing it late at night and paired it with "Keeping Up Appearances", another great show.
@timmannen It's "ride up with wear" as in as you wear it and you move about, the items ride up and so a larger size keeps you covered when they do. In terms of this series, it's an excuse they give for selling the customer poor fitting shoddy goods.
@sweetdisease A Scottsman who had his inside leg taken under the kilt, a woman who decided to buy shoes instead of a hat, and Mrs. Slocumb's neighbor who has to keep peeking through the mail slot to keep an eye on Mrs. Slocumb's pussy.
@sweetdisease i assure you, it wasn't me! i LOVE this episode -- & indeed, the whole series! :) :) i was just chuckling at the Scottish man: "And just where do you think you're going with that thing?" hahahahaaha....... & i think it's kinda cute how the young man gets shy in front of Miss Brahms about discussing the bra he wishes to buy,,, aww! :) :)
I always thought the expression ''The things you see when you havent got yer gun' meant that that you saw something so obnoxious/disgusting etc you would shoot it if you had your gun
What do they mean when they say the things you see when you haven't got your gun 15:30? I know several characters say it throughout the entire series and Ive never heard it before. I tried yahoo and Google but I'm not getting any good answers.
@TheSaintVanity It's a reference to hunting and things you see when you're out for a walk without your gun. In the phrase, generally odd or bizarre things. My grandad (who wasn't a hunter btw) said it all the time.
20:40 is the chorus from Keep the Home fires burning. Keep the Home Fires Burning, While your hearts are yearning. Though your lads are far away They dream of home. There's a silver lining Through the dark clouds shining, Turn the dark cloud inside out Till the boys come home.
this is perhaps my second-favourite episode of this charming old comedy... when they are forced to camp in together on the department floor... ah, such class, such fellowship, such a cozy feeling, and such bad singing!
@42bluey Trevor Bannister, the Guy who plays Mr Lucas. Incidentally, the only surviving members of the cast are Frank Thornton who played Captain Peacock and Nicholas Smith who played Mr Rumbold.
In Summary, Mr Lucas died April 11of a Heart Attack
Mrs Slocombe died July 09 of unspecified natural causes
Mr Humphries died of complications from Hep A he caught from food poisoning in March 07
Miss Brahms died of breast cancer in Feb 09
Mr. Grainger died 2 months after his wife in May 78
@Brittonsp Thank you for the cast summary -- it's always good to have info all in one spot (even when it's not particularly happy info)...Do I take it, then, that Mr. Spooner is the only cast member still alive (besides, perhaps, Mr. Grace's attendants, played by Penny Irving & Vivianne Johnson)?
@inkadinkadoodle No, As I said, Frank Thornton and Nicholas Smith also are alive. I didn't include Mr Spooner because I didn't consider him as main a character to be considered mentioning but he is still alive.
With the various nurses, receptionists and attendants that have appeared in the series, they didn't really have much of a role to be worth mentioning. Also, because they usually only did small parts in whatever they did, information on them is hard to come across.
Mine is too. Trevor was also very very easy on the eyes when he played Mr. Lucas. I always thought him and Ms. Brahms should have had a secret tryst just once. The whole store finds out...and laughs ensue.
for the longest time when i was little me and my mom would go get chocolate milk and random snacks from the store on saturday nights and watch vicar of dibley, are you being served, keeping up appearances and chef on PBS, awesome times

@ TheSaintVanity The expression "The things you see when you haven't got a gun", I believe, has been used three times in the series:
(1) This episode from Mrs Slocombe;
(2) The episode "Strong Stuff This Insurance" from Mr Goldberg;
(3) The episode "Things That Go Bump In The Night" from Mr Moulterd (this was Grace and Favour, but it still counts)
chrisoneal2718 5 months ago
