With Martin saying that he enjoyed Phil's clowning at a party the other evening, one gets the impression that the New York theater community is a close-knit one. Also, no matter how short the short notice was, you just know that Phil had time to remove his hat and coat backstage had he wanted to.
It sounds very much to me as though Phil Silvers was joking when he suggested he was filling in for Brando, and Daly went along with the joke. He might as well have said the Dalai Lama or Nathan Leopold.
Wikipedia says that Brando appeared once on the radio version of the show, but never on TV.
Phil Silvers was a really, REALLY great performer. And many people say was a sweet guy.

I always mix up Phil Silvers with Richard Deacon, the man who played Lumpy Rutherfords father on Leave It To Beaver.

yes to all - & there must be some joke associated with removing his coat & hat in front of the audience, but it alludes me as well.

turns out that the great singer-diplomat Harry Belafonte was scheduled to appear, and Belafonte did in fact make his appearance the next week.
