The bass is tuned only half a step down to A# (being the B string)

@Stinkbeaner no, the low B string is tuned down a half step. the rest of the strings are tuned up a half step. that way the [if we're talking concert tuning] E through G strings match exactly the notes of the guitars lowest four strings. with an extra low Bb an octave below the guitars 7th string. put a capo on the first fret of any ol bass and you're playin meshuggah, baby.

Trust me. It's a standard A# tuning. They've said so themselves in an interview back here in Sweden.

@Stinkbeaner send the link, friend. they've done different things over the years- and with different bassists. but dick tunes his 5 string to 'drop Bb' which is the B string down a half step and E through G up a half step. try playing along in any other tuning while watching him. that's how i learned to play guitar to begin with. nearly 20 years later i still rely on watching the other guy's hands to learn new material. it's drop Bb, interviews notwithstanding.

@intrepgun I think Dick switches tunings depending on the song. They tuned in Bb standard on 7 strings up until Nothing but I think Drop Bb makes sense for their 8-string stuff.

@Beholdthesharktopus he doesn't. read my explanation again. the low Bb on the bass is one octave below their 7string guitars Bb. that's for the old material. the new material has guitars that tune lower than THEIR Bb, to an F. the bass simply is matching exactly that note on his 2nd lowest string. no bass changes, no tuning changes. they're not needed.

This here's the only guy ive seen covering Meshuggah on the correct string. Everyone always thinks Mr Lovgren uses the B string for the Fchugs. Its all the Estring, up a halfstep, rendering the strings all playing in the same bassclef realm!

@jaws903 meshuggah's bassist tunes Bb F Bb Eb Ab. let's break that down. the low B on the 5string bass is tuned DOWN 1/2 step, the rest of the strings [ie a standard 4 string] are tuned UP a half step. with the four strings of a bass tuned up a half step, they are now doubling, note for note, the lowest 4 strings of meshuggah's guitars. i put a capo on the first fret on my jazz bass and jam on combustion and just about any meshuggah song. the low Bb is good for those bends in bleed, though.
