To sockmess...Honestly, I've seen Robotech, most of Macross, The first and second films, and the first 2 episodes of Macross plus (I was bored outta my mind with plus) and Shadow chronicles. I've not seen any other stuff. I didn't care for Macross the movie because it's impossible to shoehorn an entire series into 2 hours, and also because it was a thinly veiled reboot. Loved Macross 2. I seem to be the only person around to like Shadow Chronicles. It wasn't great, though. Just okay.

And to the people complaining about robotech sucking, face facts: if Carl macek hadn't brought Macross over, as world events did with Goloion/Voltron, we wouldn't have had anime become as big as it is. And honestly, there's just as many stupid things in the original japanese version as there are in the american version. Personally, I like both, each for their own reason.

Robotech: The sentinels was going to be a continuation of the american Robotech series. And would have told the continuing adventures of Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Max & Miriya, Minmei. Which pretty much none of the Japanese Macross series have dwelled on.
They did make a few episodes of Robotech: The Sentinels but they just threw the 3 episodes together and made it into an animated movie. It was supposed to be a new series. Not sure what happened but it was never made. I can only hope Harmony Gold resolves all their problems and make a new animated series or a live action movie. Hell even StarBlazers has a japanese live action movie.
@yamatokira54 HG's financial partner pulled out of the project, so they didn't have enough money to finish the series. There was a petition from a few years ago that tried to lobby HG to finish the series, but it didn't get very far.

Ok here is the story... Big/West and Studio Nue had problems making the original macross due to lack of budget. Tatsunoko helped them financially and in return Big West gave them Distribution Rights. Tatsunoko sold a license to Harmony Gold for it's Robotech.
Then due to copyright flaws, Harmony Gold was able to secure copyrights to Macross as well as U.N. Spacy, it's logo.

He had to combine parts from three different shows (Macross, Southeren cross and Genesis climber MOSPEADA) because he needed 60+ episodes for the syndication packages. r You're right the Macross Saga is similar, but that is only cause they are constrained by the animations to help the story flow. However, protoculture is not a powersource in macross. Protoculture in macross refers more to the society of males and females being together. There is no protoculture matrix in Macross. There are no Robotech Masters. The Zentradi were not created by the Robotech masters. So there are fundamental differences. Which is why Robotech is not a copy.

@thomasmiller1 - actually, with production costs these days, a couple of mill is only going to give a D rated movie. Yes, I went that low. I believe they'd have to expend at least 10 - 20 mill if not more at the VERY least to make it "look" decent. That and the movie sets they'd have to create. Props, etc. GOOD ACTORS...yes...they must have GOOD ACTORS, good story writer, producer, director...all of that. Otherwise, it would just be a P.O.S movie that I wouldn't even torrent.

Actually, BigWest / Tatsunoko still retain the original rights to everything pertaining to the Macross Universe, they did not sell off the rights to Harmony Gold, Tatsunoko only gave them a sub license to use the original Macross series outside of Japan. So in reality Japan isn't stealing anything back, because they've always owned it to begin with :)

For one who cares which was released first, both are good. Second of all, even if macross was released first, without Robotech people in the United States may have never heard of macross. How did you first hear of the Macross movie? did you live in Japan? I didn't hear about it until after I had seen the series. In fact most Robotech fans love the Macross movie and if anything Robotech has helped the movie far more than it has harmed it. Besides how many times has the Japanese cartoon makers ripped of Robotech? Do I need to say things like Macross 7, Zero etc etc. All of those are rips on Robotech. Macross and robotech both came out 1984 but the original was called The Super Dimension Fortress Macross then the switched the name to Robotech: The Macross Saga so i dont know why some poeple fight over macross is better then robotech to me its the same series but both got two diff backgrounds but same veritech fighter and both fighting diff kind of stuff

I've not seen any other stuff. I didn't care for Macross the movie because it's impossible to shoehorn an entire series into 2 hours, and also because it was a thinly veiled reboot. Loved Macross 2. I seem to be the only person around to like Shadow Chronicles. It wasn't great, though. Just okay.

Robotech: The sentinels was going to be a continuation of the american Robotech series. And would have told the continuing adventures of Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Max & Miriya, Minmei. Which pretty much none of the Japanese Macross series have dwelled on.

They did make a few episodes of Robotech: The Sentinels but they just threw the 3 episodes together and made it into an animated movie. It was supposed to be a new series. Not sure what happened but it was never made. I can only hope Harmony Gold resolves all their problems and make a new animated series or a live action movie. Hell even StarBlazers has a japanese live action movie.

Ok here is the story... Big/West and Studio Nue had problems making the original macross due to lack of budget. Tatsunoko helped them financially and in return Big West gave them Distribution Rights. Tatsunoko sold a license to Harmony Gold for it's Robotech.
Then due to copyright flaws, Harmony Gold was able to secure copyrights to Macross as well as U.N. Spacy, it's logo.

He had to combine parts from three different shows (Macross, Southeren cross and Genesis climber MOSPEADA) because he needed 60+ episodes for the syndication packages. We didn't have the internet in 1985 we just coudln't jump online and see what was happening acorss the world and see if they had anynew shows like we do today. and in robotech they had it it is protoculture it links with the mind of the pilot and responds to what he is thinking yea they may have 57 robot controls in the cockpit but the only time they realy used them is out side of combat to do little things or fine toning things stuff like that and if you look closely in robotech there mechs had 4 forms they had the jet fighter the human robot anf the garden form with the arms out or the arms in so thats 4 forms not 3

r You're right the Macross Saga is similar, but that is only cause they are constrained by the animations to help the story flow. However, protoculture is not a powersource in macross. Protoculture in macross refers more to the society of males and females being together. There is no protoculture matrix in Macross. There are no Robotech Masters. The Zentradi were not created by the Robotech masters. So there are fundamental differences. Which is why Robotech is not a copy.

It's no different that US producers taking scenes from a Japanese show of what we called "Power Rangers" there and used it over here after splicing in shots taken with American actors. Robotech for me was a big part of growing up back in the 80s even though I was teased for liking it as much as I like Star Wars. Robotech for the most part, has it's ups and downs and I'm sure for what it was back then, it was "ahead of it's time."

@thomasmiller1 - actually, with production costs these days, a couple of mill is only going to give a D rated movie. Yes, I went that low. I believe they'd have to expend at least 10 - 20 mill if not more at the VERY least to make it "look" decent. That and the movie sets they'd have to create. Props, etc. GOOD ACTORS...yes...they must have GOOD ACTORS, good story writer, producer, director...all of that. Otherwise, it would just be a P.O.S movie that I wouldn't even torrent.

in the end they made it into there on story and went many gens with it hell look at the moive and macross is good to the story is opened ended so anything can happen but its never the same charters and at some points theres what almost 100 years of a gape after a massive battle and bom all new charters new ships and new plot ill will say this they got some dam good plots but come on if your going to give it the same name at lest follow the story you laid down not change it all up

@golin123456 hmm from what i have seen of both which isn't alot i think that the main differences is that in robotech earth gets invaded by the aliens and in macross we are the ones basically invading and calling it colonizing but basically in macross earth sent out huge ships to go colonize they found planets and repeated the process spreading out across the galaxy
if your gunna watch all the macross go in the right order but if your just guinna watch one to get a taste for it watch frontier

@JamesBond77 yes i did know that harmony gold bought the rights of 3 anime shows to make and bring Robotech and new and strong u.s. Following. Which if you take the boring original macros movie tanks mostly from it. It much better story line line then any jap one as they had too steal it back and make thier marcross 2 and better seirs with a few real bad ones. the fact is Harmony gold still own it and japs keep stealing it Macross 0. I am pissed that they didn't make more adult versions though.

Actually, BigWest / Tatsunoko still retain the original rights to everything pertaining to the Macross Universe, they did not sell off the rights to Harmony Gold, Tatsunoko only gave them a sub license to use the original Macross series outside of Japan. So in reality Japan isn't stealing anything back, because they've always owned it to begin with :)

Since macross 2 there has been issues with robotech and macros even with in states like battle tech copying the mech. By u.s. copy rights Harmony Gold owns it.

@starknight97 The only reason why Macross 0, or any merchandise from Macross, couldn't get into the US, is because HG holds the trademark to the word 'Macross'. Back in the early '90's, HG already knew their rights is limited to the original Macross TV series only, hence they had no qualms when Macross 2, Macross Plus, and even the badly dubbed Clash of the Bionoids, came to the US.

They are making it more problematic for anyone else who wants to distribute anything Macross related in the US. The only reason they can scrape by with Shadow Chronicles is tatsnoko owned Genesis Climber where as Studio Nue owned Macross and Southern Cross

For one who cares which was released first, both are good. Second of all, even if macross was released first, without Robotech people in the United States may have never heard of macross. I bet if you ask the creators of macroos they are more than happy with the fact that it has become so popular here in the United States.

How did you first hear of the Macross movie? did you live in Japan? I didn't hear about it until after I had seen the series. In fact most Robotech fans love the Macross movie and if anything Robotech has helped the movie far more than it has harmed it. Macross and robotech both came out 1984 but the original was called The Super Dimension Fortress Macross then the switched the name to Robotech: The Macross Saga so i dont know why some poeple fight over macross is better then robotech to me its the same series but both got two diff backgrounds but same veritech fighter and both fighting diff kind of stuff

no worries i'm not one of those guys who says one is better than the other.....i just don't like the way some people just drop off one and give no credit and make a vid featuring units from macross franchise and label it as robotech. the common point between sdfm and robotech is only in first saga of robotech....macross plus units like the yf-19 and that other unit from macross frontier featured in this vid....they weren't a part of robotech...that's why the vid name bothers me.
