Gotta give a hand to who ever choreographed this. The immigrants seem to be doing an Eastern European folk dance, the upper class were doing box like steps, small movements. Reminiscent of the Foxtrot and Waltz, and the African Americans seemed to be doing a bit of a jazz dance mixed with early swing. Very iconic dances use to add flavor to the characters. Who ever designed that deserves an award for their attention to detail.
For those of us who can't get to Broadway, would it kill them to put these wonderful numbers on a DVD or is Sondheim the only one to realize that that is where the money is?
I saw the original Broadway version twice. I loved the show and couldn't understand why it closed as early as it did. With the large cast and lavish costumes and scenery, it was obviously a very expensive production. I just assume it was too expensive to keep it going once ticket sales started to lag. This particular production, however, garnered far more praise than the original. Why it only lasted a mere two months on Broadway is a great mystery to me.
@findthelight2000 I thought the orignal had the perfect cast [except Peter Friedman], a great premise, wonderful production values except for a few sets and was beautifully staged but the score got boring and too bombastic in the second act, as though every major character had to have a moment to scream at the audience. Regardless, it deserved a much bigger audience than many worse shows which are not even that ambitious. The peformances will remain in my heart and memory forever.
like if you came here just to see CACox97
