'Children In Need' is a yearly fund raising event the BBC does. Performers and the famous entertain the public, and we donate millions of pounds in total by the end of the night which gets distributed to various kids charities and projects.
If by the blonde guy you mean Barrett Foa (2nd Broadway Rod/Princeton), I agree! Though John Tartaglia will always be my favorite Rod/Princeton. Though I disagree w/ the rest of your comment, I think the original Broadway cast was much better, especially because they were all professional puppeteers and these actors were not. The puppeteers give the characters much more depth in the OBC.
No, that's not Stephanie D'Abruzzo, the only actor from the original Broadway cast in this is Ann Harada, who played Christmas Eve (the Japanese woman)
I think its because it was for Children in Need, and whether or not they sensor the word, it can still be heard live- and you can still read her lips- 'shit' is considered a less severe rude word then 'fuck'.
Also, there has been occasion when theyve been unsucessfull in bleeping the word- take, for example, the Royal Variety Performance not too long after this, when she shouted the scripted 'fuck', and the sensorship people didnt manage to bleep it in time!!
It's not horrible...but they interpretted quite differently compared to other casts on acting. Brian slightly annoys me cuz of the way he sings... and i think kate needs to open her mouth more. She sounds like a baby. And nicky was ok, but nobody can beat Christian Anderson and Rick Lyon! And yes, I do hope they didn't change the lyrics. It sounds offbeat and somewhat awkward...
Broadway and the West End are actually quite different in themselves. Origionally, Avenue Q was the same in both places, but the British are different to the Americans, and they had to change the script slightly to suit a new audience. It's still fantstic though! (I've seen the origional and the edited version in the West End)
why is "gary"s bit different in the West end version to the broadway version? Anyone? and i dont just mean in the west end its a guy, i mean the words are different
I disagree about this being the better cast. Brian is very stagey (more than necessary) Voices are fine, but...the boys are cuter. Are the guys not singing live? Blah.
Well if you look at a video...I dunno where it is. But if you watch it, it's the same song. The difference is that they are offbeat and the Brian there doesn't even know how to sing
...I really dislike the fact that they use a man in the West End version to portray Gary Coleman. Anyway, maybe they decided to give the role to a man since they did edit some of the show.
oh my god what talent it must take those people! they look the the muppets on tv the way they move like that! wow! I've never seen avenu Q before, only heard of it, but now i wanna see more! that is amazing how the actors when they were talking to the hosts, they still moved the puppets mouths and made them do gestures, just off the top of their heads! wow!!
Definitely a unique take on this song! I have a question, though. Why so many changes in the lyrics? Was it so the British audience could get more of the jokes (Avenue Q is full of US culture), or what?
Sorry, I cant help you there. I pretty much know nothing about Avanue Q. I've seen a couple of the US public performances of this song, and personally I prefer our cast, but then again, I've only seen a couple of examples of the US and UK cast. What are the lyric alterations you spotted (I saw the US vids a while ago)? I agree that its most likely so we get the Brit versions of the jokes, and basically use the British terms.
They changed kate's bleeped out line from the American line "Fuck!" to "Shit!". They also changed the asian woman's line from "try to work in korean deli" to "try to work in chinese restaurant". They pretty much rewrote gary coleman's lines from scratch. The American version is "I'm Gary Coleman, from TV's different strokes. Made a lot of money that got stolen by my folks. Now I'm broke, and the butt of everyone's jokes. But I'm here, the super intendent, of avenue q.
Hmmm, cool. I can see why they changed the chinese restaurant one, that works. But an interesting thing about kate's swearing, is that she did say fuck on the RVP- and they didnt manage to bleep it fully!!! Thanks for the info.
@GrimdourTheRampager I couldn't agree more... and this is coming from an American for god sakes! "My life was over when I hit puberty- but I'm here, fixin' the toilets on Avenue Q!" This was the kind of humor that made me fall in love with the play in the first place... THANK YOU LONDON CAST!
Avenue Q is a brilliant musical, I saw it last night (23/3/07) at the Noël Coward Theatre in London and it was well worth the £20. I recommend everyone to go and see it, top draw performance!
(<cont)I will not remove negative comments which give a good reason, or make a decent point, but I will remove others which do not have a point to make apart from dissing this cast. You have been warned.
Can I just remind people that this is the British cast, they will not be the same as the OBC, and you shouldn't expect that or take that as standard. They will have worked out themselves how they want to perform, the way they want to play the characters, so saying that this cast is substandard to the OBC is ignorant, as well as disrespectful.
If I see any more comments along the lines of 'nothing beats the original cast', they will be removed. (cont>)
They should've done The Money Song! They could've done the "give us your money!" parts to the studio audience, who give money as it is, and appeal to those at home! That would've ruled!
i love avenue q!!! they are so funny! i want to buy tickets! they're not bad compared to the real avenue q but they changed the song a little and christmas eve is a little bigger^^;;
i loooooooove this musical, but i'm not so sure about the london cast. i suppose i'm just hypocritical since i love stephanie and john and basically the entire OBC!
Avenue Q was THE highlight for me on Friday, all the other shows which performed on that day, looked so crap compared to Avenue Q! This show just rocks!
Watch out, current Wicked fan, comming through! Though I must admit, seeing a song on the TV, even if you do have close ups and whatever, never really compares to the real thing, seeing it live.
Plus, Wicked wasnt shot as well as some of the other stuff. Too many distant shots, not enough close ups (some of the ones which were there looked really weird.) Avenue Q was one deff. of the better shot ones.
This is the point, really, to balance the expressions that can be displayed through the actors with the innocence assosiated with puppets. Personally, I found the delicate balance to be amazing when I saw the show live. I could watch both at once, it seemed. I think it's completely different on a screen. I looked at the puppets much less.
I did, its in another video. I didnt realise when I was seperating the clips from the origional recording, that this was directly afterwards. It was easier to load them seperatly.
