watched from the turns for years, but NOTHING gives the "shot from a rifle" sense of speed like behind the pits at indianapolis! thumbs up, thanks for posting
I was there that day. A fun day of speed. In fact, I was in the upper deck on the outside of Turn 1 where the camera panned for a couple of seconds. Tom Carnegie on the PA calling speeds and new track records, John Totten calling the action on the track and Jim Phillipe doing the interviews. All three are gone now and the big crowds on pole day are gone as well. Those were the days. Thanks for posting!
Thanks so much for posting have been going for so many years(1977) and have lost so many family members that used to go this really brought back memories of what it used to be like
I was looking for me in the video. We sat in that area that day and I remember it well. I was about 17 and used to bring my cassette recorder to every major event and now have a lot of ferric oxide memories. Thanks for the memory.

Tom Carnegie had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand during Sneva's run for the pole.

That came as close to capturing how it felt to be in the stands on Pole Day back then as anything I've seen on film. I miss those days.
Good job!
Hopefully someday Indy will see that kind of wonder and enthusiasm again!

@Fredzilla2k i think Indycar in 2012 will help those days come back

I'm amazed at how good the quality is on this old video, even the TV broadcasts weren't this plain. Awesome, nice to see the good ol' days of Indy.

3:50 you can see how Tom Sneva would use such a tiny rear wing.

Track record? Only record that is going to be broken this year is the low attendance figure.
Crowd? There are more there then for qually than there will be this year for the 'race'.
The snorting grandson sure made this a great event...

"...And it's a new track record!" words we'll probably never hear again

Maybe, maybe not: turbochargers seem set to return to Indianapolis in 2011.
