Montague Servant: Bites Thumb. Gets Scared. Jumps in Car. Jumps out of the right side of Car. Jumps back in Car. Jumps out again. Freaks Out. Hides behind a car door. Gets hit by handbag. ^Great directions Luhrmann.
@idonotknowme swords and daggers yes.. when mercutio drops his gun into the sand it had dagger printed on in, and when capulet calls for his longsword he is reaching for a shotgun
There's so many mixed views to this film and I think each one has some good points. In my own opinion I liked it. I understood a bit better what was supposed to be happening and I thought it was a clever idea. And Jamie Kennedy as Sampson was awesome. :)
When reading Romeo and Juliet im not to sure if it was ever clear that the two men at the market (pink hair and bald) were ever Capulets or Montagues. My teacher was even stumped at this. They speak like capulets but theyre always portrayed as Montagues in the movies.
@WeAreTheInnovators Well that's kind of an interesting thing in the play's Character Lists it is said that Sampson and Gregory are servants of Capulet. HOWEVER once the story gets going and we get to this scene Gregory sees Benvolio and claims him as his master's kin, and eggs Sampson on. Seeing as Benvolio is a Montague this implies that the men are not Servants of Capulet but of Montague. This 'mistake' is in 3 diffrent sources I checked.
@petacavanagh Sampson: Well if you do sir, I am for you! I serve as good a man as you! Abraham: No better? Gregory: Here comes our kinsman, say better! Sampson: Yes sir, better! Abraham: You lie! Draw if you be men! Or in Basic English - S - If you want a fight, I'll take you on. My boss is as good as yours. A - Not better? G - Here comes backup, say better! S - Yea he's better! A - You lie! Draw your weapons!
@ayoopdog i hardly know anything about shakespeare, but actually most of shakespeare's works had elements of comedy in them, I think back then the style was to put in equal amounts of comedy and tragedy to give the audience a few laughs as well. I remember having to ridiculously overanalyse that one sentence Mercutio say's before he dies "look for me in the morning and you'll find me a grave man" or something, which was apparently hilarious due to it's play on words of death and seriousness.
Shakespeare was such a genius that even today, when his words are spoken by absolute retards with flowery shirts and pink hair they are still just as good.
God the pink haired guy almost killed the entire movie. He was so unfunny it was painful. I almost turned it off at this point, which would have been a shame, because the rest of the cast do a perfect job. This scene just fucking kills the movie before it even properly begins...
@raphamuffin - I'm not an idiot I said I don't get why they done the scene the way they did it your just some sad person who calls people idiots on youtube because they have nothing better to do :/
@seanthomas642 actually it was really well done. By using the original language and visually modernising it, it allows people who perhaps would've been able to understand, to understand. it was really really well done. tell me another film that was modernised and actually done well. also it was excellently shot and edited. despite it being one of my favourite shakespeare plays, i thoroughly enjoyed it. i think baz luhrmann did a wonderful job at modernising romeo and juliet.
This scene just doesn't work the way they've done it here. It's far too exagerated, I mean this scene is meant to be slightly exagerated but here it just sounds and looks weird.
I remeber seeing this part of the movie with absolutely no background on the story, except that Romeo and Juliet were forbidden lovers, and in the end they killed themselves. This scene weirded me out so much, I had to change the channel. I now regret it.
The combination of the original language (thee, thou) with the modern setting is just plain out weird. Especially when the characters are yelling like this.
This is how it really goes down in the hood...now you know...there are many men in prison at this very moment for biting their thumbs at other men...sometimes it leads to tickling which "Darryl from The Office" would call "Fluffy Fingers"..it must be true.
