It depends on if the painter is spraying a Kandy Basecoat or a true Kandy. Kandy basecoats have pearls or metallics pre mixed in with it, so that it sprays down more like a basecoat, basically makes it easier to shoot. A true kandy is simply transparent color, so the basecoat will determine the final color and effect. True kandy is harder to spray, because being transparent, the more you spray, the darker it gets, and if you overlap wrong, you get striping that can't be fixed.
Some shops will only shoot kandy basecoats, because they are usually collision shops that like money but aren't trained to use kustom finishes. I am strictly a custom paint and airbrush artist, I own Suicide Kings Kustoms, so these finishes are all I use. I personally like shooting my kandy over silver basecoat, cause silver will give it the truest representation of the color. You can also shoot a car with a 2 tone, and then spray the whole thing down with kandy, and it will look good too.
Don't get me wrong though, Kandy Basecoats are a great product and provide a great finish, as do all of House of Kolors products, I just tend to stick with a true kandy. Especially when doing a metal flake job. Again, I only use silver flake, unless I have to use something else, which is rare.
Ive been trying to find a really good custom paint place in my area but all I can really find that I trust is my local collision place which is real nice but I know they arent coustom oriented
He didnt sand my shit down its white underneath which is my factory color then he sprayed the gold base on top of that then the brandy. It looks like red as hell and when the sun hits it looks red orange lol. Never again
