The reason because only one wheel spins is because its an open differential. No lock out on it. Cars today have a lock out that keeps the wheels spinning some what together when one slips.
I think a burnout CAN be cool, as long as you spin BOTH wheels. Regarding drivetrain I would say that once spinning the drivetrain doesn't suffer that much anymore.

The motor is a 2017cc w/dual Weber 40 IDF's. It's only spinning one wheel because it has a Stock VW Thing transaxle in it with a stock diff.
