Man I'd really like to get ahold of Jiu-Jitsu University, Saulo's instructional book for his method of teaching BJJ. But I can't afford it, I am trying to find someone that hosts it in .PDF format but surprisingly no luck yet. Can anyone here help me?
@XxXxXJonathanXxXxX Yeah, I actually bought it last month, but to tell you the truth I'd like for Saulo to release a no-gi version. He's got his "Freestyle Revolution" DVDs out there but they are not as comprehensive as his JJ University book.
Not that this makes me great but I actually trained with Saulo for quite a while when he first moved to USA saulo is a high rank in judo he actually practiced judo before BJJ.
I think we agree there. Jiu Jitsu was there before Jingoro Kano and Helio Gracie. Both guys articulated it into a comprehensive system which was shaped over the years into a specific sport. Judo guys spend 9 out of 10 hours throwing people and can throw anybody the way they want. BJJ guys spend 9 out of 10 hours tapping guys on the ground and they can tap anybody the way they want.
bjj and judo... are two different arts completley diferent ... a lot of people who practice judo constantly want to take credit for bjj... but in reality there is no basis for your argumet just as karate and tia kwon do are differet so is bjj to judo... judo was better the jj but bjj is far superior in terms of evolution of the way people look at ground game ... bjj is responsible for an active gaurd ... judo is great if you want to toss a mo fo both good but very different
Oy vey. I'm a Tae Kwon Do blackbelt (taught for 11 years)... TKD is very much rooted in Japanese Karate. In fact, Korean martial artists were typically training in Shotokan Karate (and other Japanese styles) until Korea became an independent nation and sought to create its own national martial art, at which point 6 Kwans (houses) of martial arts were chosen to create a true Korean style, which was refined by the Korean Karate masters of each Kwan and we now know as Tae Kwon Do.
jdizzle233 - Of course BJJ owes to Judo. Just like Tae Kwon Do owes to Karate and, ultimately, every martial art owes to the Chinese. Martial arts, like mankind itself, have evolved and will continue to evolve. Know your history, know your future.
*And if you really truly don't think BJJ owes anything to Judo then I have to question that you either a) train in BJJ at all, or b) have a BJJ instructor who doesn't know what he/she is talking about.
I wish I remembered the account name of the guy who said the top BJJ players don't use many judo throwing techniques and choose to use dragdowns instead. These two are an example of the fact that many of the top players don't just have great newaza but fantastic tachiwaza also. Seonage, kataguruma, te-guruma, o-ouchi gari, etc. Great technique. I have the elitist attitude of BJJ re: that it definitely IS employing established judo techniques. These guys are off the hook though! Fuck!
Saulo started in Judo though. Not a typical pure bjj path. They do teach judo throws in their bjj classes and it is an amazing advantage in bjj, no doubt about that. BJJ does go beyond when it comes to the ground, it is not just judo newaza.
I'll concede that it teaches the fundamental tenements of newaza to a much higher standard than most judo places, but I still don't see how it has evolved beyond judo. When I ask this most people cite moves like the omoplata, gogoplata etc. However, most moves such as these that people consider "purely BJJ", have been found in textbooks, being demonstrated before the Gracies were even born. Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki demonstrates many "purely BJJ" techniques, and has never cross trained.
I guess I'm being a bit elitist here, and I have a bit of a negative attitude at times due to the sorta, elitist attitude of my coach. I do respect the grappling abilities of BJJ people. I just do try to remind them of their roots, because I get sick of the increasingly popularity of bashing judo. If people want to get exposed to techniques through a particular avenue, awesome. But people should remember their roots. Just like us judo people should remember it was probably all invented...

these guys are top 5 in the U.S. how are you going 2 say moves like the flower sweep are pretty much eh they are the moves that got them where they are now but im sure u trainined w/ helio gracie so ur thebest right jayh81
Leo Vieira, Cobrinha, Marcelo Garcia, Roger Gracie, Jacare, Demian Maia, Andre Galvao, to name a few. For americans Robert Drysdale, Jeff Glover, Ryan Hall, BJ Penn, are all very skilled as well. Just throwing names out i am not saying who is better.
You know, I had thought that those takedowns starting at about :40 were just busted Seio Nages that he had tried and they defended against, but I just got through watching Saulo's DVD on takedowns and he's doing that on purpose. He fakes the Drop Seio and then goes for the trip (Kouchi Gare). He goes back and forth between him so his opponent's don't know what he's doing. Looks like it works. haha
Yup. With your left hand grab your opponent's right sleeve. With your right hand grab his gi pants at his left knee. Now, plant your left foot right next to his right ankle. Then, get perpendicular to your opponent by driving off your left foot and drive him over with your right leg. Your right arm will push his leg over to make the sweep more powerful while your left hand can either just hold his sleeve tight to your or pull it towards your right shoulder to turn him even more.
If you're having trouble getting this there are 2 very common mistakes. The first is planting your left foot too far from his ankle. It can't be up by his knee or somewhere on his shin. It has to be right next to his ankle and tight against it to make sure he can't post it out. The second is attempting it when your opponent is postured up. His weight needs to be forward. You can set this up by first pulling his arms towards your head, then releasing one to grab his gi pants.
This looks like the Flower Sweep in Saulo's Jiu Jitsu University book on page 115. My instructor just had me get that book the other day. Very good stuff. Andrewi2000's description matches up with the description in the book.

If helio never learnt or trained before, how do you think he knew and able to execute the moves we see today.
All those moves are observed in what we call "judo" and "BJJ". Terminology is meaningless.... all we have are different people.
Helio might not have trained with Maeda, but his older brothers did.... and the knowledge is passed onto him.

Remember back when Saulo was untocheble? Well, people don't sleep on Xande cause hes tearing up in Grapplers Quest, and he avenged his loss to Roger in this year Mundial. Not to mention he already has victories over people like Dean lister, Jamal Patterson, Rolando Jacare, and Marcelo Garcia.
