His claim that corporations don't exert influence on governments/nations is laughable.
Actually its not laughable, its flat out dangerous. I would have assumed a man who has the experience of Giddens, who has the kind of intelligence that makes him able to speak fluently for an hour without lecture notes (no mean feat in my book), could believe such a thing. He is either uninformed on this particular point or lying to some degree. and personally I find it hard to believe he is uninformed
This guy is a advocate of globalization, He believes globalization is a phenomenon, that is obsurd! Globalization is a contrived plan of a few global elitist. He is a typical intellectual, he knows his popularity is based on middle ground. He actually believes nothing, he operates his life in the gray area.
On the part of the growing inequality, id like to see where he found those numbers. These are usually dependant upon where you accquire those statistics - for instance compare the SAPRIN report to the World Bank Reports on market liberalization. 2 VERY different views on the impact of free-markets with 2 VERY different results.
No doubt that he is a very bright guy. But he doesn't seem to get it. His advice is to bend over and take it. He seems more a mouthpiece for the global corporation controlling a left and keeping them as docile as they have become. It is voices like his framing your consciousness. Look past him.
look at the dancing leg of the audience!

Does anyone have the speech by the Monsanto Corp CEO, to which Giddens refers? I want to see it.

Agree. If you havent engaged into it before i'd like to recommend Giddens theories over "reflexiv democracy".
(e.g. extemely stong theories with implications of "divide-n-conquer)

Ojalá sus libros tuvieran muchísimo más alcance y éxito... así, tal vez, no tendríamos "Un Mundo Desbocado"
