A cocktail party just wasn't a cocktail party unless you played this with the volume knob up high with everyone screeching out the words. Oh boy did this single get a work out!Always got played at the end of the night after we had been listening to James Last 'Hammond a Gogo' for the last hour. Happy, happy days, that sadly, are no longer here.
I'm gobsmacked! I've never heard of or seen this before. And it IS cringe-making. BUT...I need to know the story behind this recording. How on Earth did this make it to the top of the charts in so many countries? How did the Ofarim become involved? Did they write it? They were fine singers in Hebrew. But this is, well...pretty bad. Ugh of all the Israeli acts to score an international hit in the late '60s, I'd never expect this.
One of these days I am going to find the Nancy Ames/Mason Williams version (they wrote it). I seem to remember them performing it years ago, maybe the Smothers Brothers show.
@CaptBill1947 Yes, it was on the Smothers Brothers show...and I prefer their version. I wish someone would post that video!! I have it on VHS, but haven't the technical ability to get it posted, unfortunately.
@katbaloo3 The Composers are always the BEST. People can improve WITH LOTS OF HELP but to compose a song on the spot, to compose a noise unlike anything heard, to be the FIRST...one cannot beat that, n'est ce pas? So Smothers Brothers is like SO a rehash...improved or not.

This song was a (huge) hit in Europe, but not in the States, (low Charting)...most American cringe when they do hear this song though (and rightly so!)
just a bloody great song, who cares if you cringe, it is a bloody sad day when politics gets into music, anyway good song, should be more of it. Australian here by the way.
I don't recall hearing the Ofarim's version in the US but the Mason Williams version was extremely popular in the US. I must have heard it a million times in the 60's in the US.
I didn't say I didn't like it (I do), but I think it's her trilly voice that do most people off here in the States... and yes I remember Mason (Classical Gas) Williams version.
My parents, who were groovy BBC people in London in the 60s, had this record, and they used to play it to me when I was a tiny kid in Dublin in the early 70s. Very kitschy but good fun.
I never thought anything could be worse than the "Legendary Stardust Cowboy." He's on YouTube. Just go to "Parallelized" by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy. Seriously, I didn't think it was possible anything could be worse than him. But here it is.

I don't think that this is a bloody, great song, but this song introduced me to Esther Ofarim in the late 1960s, and she is a bloody, great singer.
