You can that even without a fixed gear. You just slightly throw the bike back and forth, using the brakes when needed. I do this frequently when I ride. Fell over only a couple of times, but not in recent years.
stopping for lights and traffic is silly on a bike! i used to commute with a bike to work about 10 miles downtown and could get there faster and easier with a bike then either driving or taking public transit. I used to run lights all the time if it was safe
granted I did eventually go flying and break my right scapula(cracked my helmet), it was because the bike fell apart at 35 mph riding downhill with traffic. I'm lucky the truck behind me had decent breaks.
*reads the description* i am glad someone finally has the balls to voice up for us cyclists, yeah it is easy to act tough when your in half a ton of steel, that is why i recommend cyclists get the "airzound3" it is a compressed air bike horn that is 115decibels and make no mistake it is LOUD just look at clips of it on youtube. best £24 i ever spent and after 6months it is still going
Best i can do is when at a red light, slowing a good few metres away and gently edging forwards, but i'm definetly up for doing what i've just witnessed. Impressive stuff!
@wsbygt On my old FZR250 I could almost do it (for 1/2 second) but I was really comfortable with that bike and knew it. Lot harder to do it on my 600 sports now.
@aussiekwv I dont believe you. I ride a bike everyday almost, and I always stop at red lights. I admit some cyclists dont, but they are the minority. This is a myth, I believe as many motorists over exagerate this, in order to make excuses for agression towards cyclists.
@KrunchyJD Sorry mate, I have to agree with aussiekwv .. I ride 100-200km a week in town and in 2 1/2 years have only seen 2 other cyclists stop for red lights. I'm surprised I haven't seen one get hit by cross traffic yet. I agree with you on the bike police though. It would make things a little better.
@KrunchyJD Agree with you entirely. While it would be nice to run all the reds, fact is motorists DO justify some cyclists' flaunting laws for their agression and contempt. If any cyclist feels red lights should not apply to them, they can change that law (not gonna happen) or live in a world of people selectively obeying laws they like. Like drivers not giving us the legal amount of room.
@aussiekwv I always say, as a cyclist I believe that we should have plain clothed police on bicycles. I am happy for them to book cyclists jumping reds, so long as they also book agressive motorists.
I can trackstand on my freewheels for a few seconds. Supposed it depends on how good your balance is.
With regards the other cyclist thats a shame. I've had threats of violence against me but the guy was too gutless to get out and fight like a man, LOL! Big man using a car as a weapon, these types of people, lol!
I also read about a big courtcase you had last year of the hit and run where the driver defended himself. Proper nutjob he was
It's certainly a skill being able to sit there without putting your feet down. The way most do it (especially on a slight uphill) is to move the bike back and forth a couple of inches either way (of course with the wheel turned and the balance right. I feel skilled if I can bring my motorcycle to a stop and then putting my feet down (partial balancing for that extra second) LOL
Funny I should find this clip. I commute to work every morning by Bike, and while Track Standing at a light, a motorist and I striked up a little morning conversation while waiting for the light to change. But I tell ya, the terrain of the pavement / road determines the difficulty / ease of the Stand.
That is quite impressive, that's got to be a fixed gear?
And to your comments and story in the description, one of the many reason's I've now got a cycle camera is because of violence offered to me as a cyclist. Sad, isn't it?
I think you are right about getting a front and rear facing camera, I've been looking into how I can set it up.
Not sure if fixed gears. I didn't check although that would make it easier I guess.
Yes very sad but that's the world these days. I gave up cycling for that reason. I think cars / trucks / etc need to be a little more patient and cyclist friendly. I also think cyclists need to obey the traffic lights and other traffic laws. I certainly did when I was a cyclist.
Some car drivers I think have this attitude that cyclists shouldn't be on the road. B/c I see behaviour similar to what you described (although not as bad). Instead of maybe seeking to change the legislation - they take matters into their own hands. It's madness to think human beings actually target each other to do harm or scare - for no other reason perhaps, other that the lack of positive mental health in one party.
i can do that :D

I balance at lights too, but I do it on two wheels and one foot.

I'm guessing he was clipped into the pedals and didn't want to unclip. I used to do that when I rode a lot. Don't ride now.

@DaveBC1 Unclipping isn't the bit that's a hassle - it's clipping back in that takes a little more time. ;)

you can do this with practice, it's much easier to do this when you are facing up hill as you can roll backwards.

That would've won you a sprint or two in the old days before they outlawed it. Well, put a time limit on it anyway.
I saw a sprint once that lasted about half an hour - each was trying to psyche the other out, till one of them went for it lol
