Paris looks nothing like this anymore; if the people of Paris in 1900 were to take a time machine to 2011 they would most likely feel they aren't even in Paris. Only the landmarks remain - Eiffel Tower, Arch De Triumph, Notre Dame, Paris Garnier Opera, but a lot of the rest of the city would look foreign to them. Paris is a city that has been transforming itself ever since Baron Eugene Haussman "modernized it" under Napoleon the 3rd in the 1850's.

What a marvelous glimpse into another era! This is simply wonderful, and somewhat haunting, to realise that we are essentially looking at shadows of people from another time...
The effect is somewhat marred, however, by the choice of music, lovely as it is on its own. I'd suggest that it might be better with a soundtrack by Debussy, his 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune', for example, which apparently was first performed only a few years before this film was made.

I think the best times to have lived in Paris were 2 different periods: The Second Empire which was in the 1850's through 1869. Skip the 1870 through 1871 year since that terrible Franco Prussian War and Siege of Paris happened!! Then you have the Third Republic Belle Epoque from the 1870's through 1912 which really did look amazing. Automobiles, electric lights, cinema and 2 grand Expositions - 1889 with Eiffel Tower and 1900 as shown here. What a beautiful time it was.

I got very emotional seeing this video. All of these souls have departed, a reminder of how fast life goes. I see how the world is now and wish I could go back and live at the turn of the century, an age of invention instead of the endless intervention and regulation that dominates now. Despite society's shortcomings, people seemed so much more dignified, they had their pride. Iif this was a film from today, there would be people making rude faces, hurling remarks at the camera, etc.
it's ironic that you mention how dignified people in the video are and how a video from today would capture people acting immaturely and rudely. I came across this video because I'm researching the human zoos that existed at this and nearly every other fair at the turn of the twentieth century. Essentially, any person or ethnic group that could be convinced or forced to make the trip was exhibited for fairgoers as "savage" or "uncivilized" and ridiculed for it. People in 1900 had faults too
Well, in those days the camera was new and quite remarkable to people, so there would be a lot more people acting sensibly, and a lot less people acting silly.

Within the last 5 years or so we've lost the last of the Ziegfeld girls, the last Titanic survivor, the last of the American Civil War widows, the last pre-Revolution Romanov and so on. Just 80-100 years ago there were many of these people around to reminisce. A few weeks ago a local woman died at 106. She was 2 years old when the last American Revolution widow passed away. Our lives are drops in the ocean of eternity.
@MrCombat1965 I sometimes wish I could go back to this time too. Even though it is nice to have tv and internet and everything else it would be neat to go back to this time period. I have actually met a quite a few people well over one hundred! I also met the last survivor from the titanic. I get sad every time I hear about someone really old dying who remembered very old things like this.
It sure is amazing to get a glimpse back in time and I also wonder what kind of life these people had. I sure wish I could spend a day in this time and I also wish we still had at least some of the good values from back then but each time has its own burden and so did this. I sure love how they were checking out the camera ;)

@alorki1947 Nous n'avons pas "laissé entrer l'ennemi", nous l'avons invité chez nous pour nous aider lors du boum industriel des années soixante avant de le parquer dans des HLM en espérant qu'il disparaîtrait. C'est nous qui en avons fait un ennemi. L'absence de politiques actives d'intégration et d'éducation nous hante aujourd'hui. Nous avons notre part de responsabilité dans l'incivisme et la progression délétère de notre société.

Sometimes we're too quick to glorify the past. While it's true the elegance and manners of then are largely gone, a lot of the ignorance and rigid views and values of back then are also gone. Not to mention that the working class were poorer than today and class distinctions were well marked. Ya, no immigrants back then from outside Europe but many things were harder back then and not tolerated. Think gays, women roles, child labor and much more!
These were such great times, a shame society has forgotten the standards of proper dress, and the grand esthetics of la Belle Epoque. This is wonderful footage, and I thank you for posting it for all who harbour an appreciation for this bygone era to see. Good show!

I think the best times to have lived in Paris were 2 different periods: The Second Empire which was in the 1850's through 1869. Skip the 1870 through 1871 year since that terrible Franco Prussian War and Siege of Paris happened!! Then you have the Third Republic Belle Epoque from the 1870's through 1912 which really did look amazing. Automobiles, electric lights, cinema and 2 grand Expositions - 1889 with Eiffel Tower and 1900 as shown here. What a beautiful time it was.

Of course people seemed happier back then, ignorance is bliss after all. Today we will probably digest more information and knowledge than those people did in their entire life times (okay, probably not, but the point is that we can).
We tend to look back at the positive things of the past, and compare them to the negatives of the present. That comparison is not fair and the "good ol' days" always seem favourable.
I just wish more people would be happy with the present.

I got very emotional seeing this video. All of these souls have departed, a reminder of how fast life goes. I see how the world is now and wish I could go back and live at the turn of the century, an age of invention instead of the endless intervention and regulation that dominates now. Despite society's shortcomings, people seemed so much more dignified, they had their pride. Iif this was a film from today, there would be people making rude faces, hurling remarks at the camera, etc.

it's ironic that you mention how dignified people in the video are and how a video from today would capture people acting immaturely and rudely. I came across this video because I'm researching the human zoos that existed at this and nearly every other fair at the turn of the twentieth century. Essentially, any person or ethnic group that could be convinced or forced to make the trip was exhibited for fairgoers as "savage" or "uncivilized" and ridiculed for it. People in 1900 had faults too

Within the last 5 years or so we've lost the last of the Ziegfeld girls, the last Titanic survivor, the last of the American Civil War widows, the last pre-Revolution Romanov and so on. Just 80-100 years ago there were many of these people around to reminisce. A few weeks ago a local woman died at 106. She was 2 years old when the last American Revolution widow passed away. Our lives are drops in the ocean of eternity.

Les cités HLM étaient peuplées par les classes moyennes qui ont fui vers les centres villes quand la proportion d'immigrés est devenue trop forte et a engendré des situations de tension entre français et africains. Les immigrés en provenance d'extrême orient n'ont pas été mieux lotis et ne posent pas autant de problèmes. Je te rejoins quant au manque de politique d'intégration cependant celle-ci devait se faire par l'assimilation que l'antiracisme dogmatique a condamné.

Sometimes we're too quick to glorify the past. While it's true the elegance and manners of then are largely gone, a lot of the ignorance and rigid views and values of back then are also gone. Not to mention that the working class were poorer than today and class distinctions were well marked. Ya, no immigrants back then from outside Europe but many things were harder back then and not tolerated. Think gays, women roles, child labor and much more!

These were such great times, a shame society has forgotten the standards of proper dress, and the grand esthetics of la Belle Epoque. This is wonderful footage, and I thank you for posting it for all who harbour an appreciation for this bygone era to see. Good show!
