This was supposed to be a duet between Fred Knittle (the guy singing here) and Joe Benoit, but just 2 days before show time, Joe unexpectedly died, which makes this performance even that much more heartbreaking. If you enjoy this video, I recommend gettign the whole documentary/film from Amazon or somewhere.
I gave this movie to my 72 year old mother as a belated christmas gift on thursday after watching it she has been running around doing stuff like a teenager Bless this movie
RIP Fred, you made me cry in the theatre...great stuff...see ya in heaven and say hello to Al Meyer...he'll be singing w/ you as he went there a few days before you and he LOVED to sing:)
May he rest in peace. What a beautiful man. I cry every time I see this video, but now I'm crying even harder. I'm going to miss this wonderful guy and his chorus.
As the song says, the world has lost something that it can never replace. I was lucky enough to see Fred in both the Y@H movie and live in concert. He had lived an amazing life, dedicating himself to the country and his community. His strong optimism and humor, even when he was sick, is something that i'll always remember. Fred was a big guy with an even bigger personality and an even bigger heart. R.I.P. FRED!
wish I could have "fixed" you Fred. You gave that song a meaning it would never have had without you. God bless you for the gift of that song to so many of us who only met you through the film of your chorus. "And tears come streaming down your face When you lose something you can't replace. When you love someone and it goes to waste. Could it be worse? Lights will guide you home..." Forever in love, Chris Tyrell Canada
I just heard the news about Fred and I am so sorry. i loved this movie and this was such a special part of it. Rest in Peace and loving condolences to your family and friends.
Never really heard the words in this great song until Fred sang them. Holy smokes; three days ago I heard this story on (NPR or Air America???) and heard him singing. I've been gone from that town for 21 years and it's still an amazingly powerful source of meaning--What a beautiful voice and musical group--
This was an amazing moment in the film. For anyone who's come upon this video without knowing the context or having seen the film, please do. I defy anyone not to feel both teary and uplifted by this.
Fred was an incredible person - raised millions of dollars for deaf children in his professional career - and then retired and created another career entertaining thousands. I was proud to know him and I'll miss his jokes!
I just heard that Fred Knittle died today. I wanted to listen to his performance one more time. Thank you Fred for this heart felt gift you gave to the world. God Bless.
I just saw the documentary on big screen.... I was blown awayu with the whole thing: a laugh and a tear, life and death, .... beautiful, and it shows that life doens't need to end @ 60 of 65... for these guys, it STARTED there!!!!
Actually Fred continued to perform after this movie was made albeit on a limited basis. He lived and performed for quite sometime after and passed away on January 1, 2009.
I saw the documentary in TV today. I never have cried of something in TV, but this did. Very touching. And deep respect for a man who fights for his life and doesn't have much more time to live - gives so much of himself.
It's like when Johnny Cash sang "Hurt." Suddenly, the song is supplemented with a depth of character and experience that the first version didn't have. Kudos to Coldplay; they're terrific, and I love the original recording on _X&Y_ (their best album, in my opinion), but Chris Martin won't have this kind of effect for another 30 or 40 years.
The elderly don't deserve to be cooped up in homes to wither, but to be celebrated, Bob you rock for showing the rest of us how to build a generational bridge.
I actually prefer this version to Coldplay's. Fred rocks. I just saw the movie last night...and it was amazing, beautiful, joyful, sad, every emotion in the book.
I find myself unable to stop watching this cut and damned if I don't tear up each and every time I watch it.
Light will guide us all home one day.
Bob Cilman, I hope you view these responses because there are fewer and fewer REAL HEROES around these days but you are a very special and amazing hero whether you know it or not. You really are. My new aspiration is to be involved with this group one day, just give me a few years.
I saw it with my parents, 85 and 84. we cried, laughed, and left the movie room with new view of life and death, wishing to meet and hug all these great persons
The lyrics make it sound so good and I'm not saying he's not singing from his heart but, this is a Coldplay song and they are trying their best to make it sound the same or almost the same as Coldplay
Every last person in this movie deserves more than an academy award. this movie is a must see by everyone. I watched it with my teenage daughter and we both loved it, although I'm the one who cried like an infant. that guy who put this group together is a more than a hero, he's a savior.
I bought the movie this weekend, and loved it. The members of this group are so amazing, and the songs take on so much more meaning when they sing them.
This is the real deal, folks. All you tossers who want to diminish it will someday find what you have missed. I predict this movie will be around 100 years from now, and this song sums it all up. Sit back and enjoy.
Anybody that watch this and post stupid comments knowing that this is an old man who is fighting for his life and still giving his all to pay tribute to his fallen friends is an idiot who doesnt deserve to breathe oxygen.
I finally got to see it this weekend, and I must say it is one of the most inspiring movies any person can see in their lifetime! It embodies the desire to live. The sheer will and determination to live on for something that truly is fulfilling to one's soul.
Its amazing to see what a fucking cruel little asshole you are, abbotblues...Making jokes of a dying mans obeisity??? Maybe he's got a thyroid problem which effects 45% of our population...Not that your even open minded enough to think before you open that shithole you call a mouth.
Be aware that the only reason your breathing right now is because your a coward who hides behind a keyboard...If you'de ever like to find out what Im talking about PVT message me & I'll deliver you to your maker
The film isn't about the comedy of old people singing modern songs. It's goes past that, and shows how we all are the same deep down. We are truly all young at heart.
I cried. The words have quite a weight coming from someone who needs a machine to help himself breath. I mean, he is singing the words "I will try to 'fix' you" and "lights will guide you".
I just finished watching that movie, and I didn't cry (surprising...) but I got that wave of happiness that floods down your body. This is one of my favorite movies.
I was goin through some tough times and when I saw this video. I had my face streaming with tears automatically but at the same time it helped me smile again.
This is great. There's a video on Youtube called, something like, I Jumped in the River, it's a different ballgame in many ways, a punky song with a narrated story but what a character. She sounds like a hell of a person to have known. Our care homes really should have artists and musicians knocking on the door. These people have so much to offer.
i had a lump in my throat watching this - i wonder if he was thinking about anyone in particular when he was singing it... the film is coming out this friday 17th can't wait to see it
I recently saw the movie at the cinema and... when it came to that part I thought God help me, don't let me cry with all the people surrounding me... it's overwhelming.
When I first saw this my grandfather had just passed away, I am a male nurse and took care of him the last few days before his death. It all came full circle in a sort and I came apart at the seams as this is how I felt during those last few nights staying up with him just him and I, I had 15 years experiance as a nurse but, could not fix him though I prayed I could and was angry and ashamed that I was helpless.
