Instant reply should come into effect when two umpires can not make a sound judgement. This would be for a bang/bang play or fan interference. Umpires are human and mistakes, this one was a huge history one that should of been reviewed and put in the correct category. This is a perfect game for Galarraga.
They shouldn't reverse the call because there is not precedence for that and no instant replay for such calls. But I think it should be in hall of fame list of perfect games with an asterisk next to it.
As an umpire, I can say blown calls are a part of the game. Umpires really do get over 99% of the calls correct, but nobody's perfect all the time (no pun intended).
In retrospect, Armando Galarraga will probably be remembered much more for how he responded to Jim Joyce's error than if he had actually gotten credit for the perfect game.
The measure of a man is how he responds in the midst of adversity. Both of these men did absolutely everything right.
To participants in all sports at any level - THIS is sportsmanship personified.
Galarraga is awesome!!! Jim Joyce feels like shit for missing the call and Galarraga just takes the blown call like he would as if he wasn't 1 out from a perfect game... now thats some sportsmanship! :)))
I wish this guy had the balls to go, "Fuck you Joyce and fuck you Selig. I want my Perfect Game and I want my instant replay." Now fans of baseball have to continue to suffer through blown calls and shitty umpires. Thanks a lot.
@kgoo867 excuse me you fucking asshole scum bag i have a damn disbality and no we do not need replay you don't like stop watching and stop bitching go back under your cave. replay its not going to help
Cry more. I'm dyslexic. You're preaching to the fucking choir, kid.
And yes. We DO need instant replay. Most fans today who aren't old and watch other sports and see how useful it is want it, and once Selig is out, replay will be in. End of story. Replay will make up for the incompetence of these umpires. Problem solved.
@kgoo867 first off no just cause you are does not make us the same you fucking moron every deals with there stuff diffrent you idoitc scum asshole. replay is a waste of fucking time seling is not his problem players don';t even what it. you fucking moron. your are fucking running the baseball exprteince
@kgoo867 replay does not work "fine in every other sport" you can watch football and hockey and still have judgement calls that can go both ways. half the fan base is not stuck in the past. the point of baseball is enjoying the game and human error is and always is going to be part of the game
Do you see the word "perfect" anywhere in that definition? No. You don't. No one said instant replay was perfect. I said it was FINE. Which it is in every sport that actually has it. It's hard to enjoy a game when you have human error making it so the best team doesn't succeed when it matters most.
Congratulations. You belong to the other half. Go be somewhere.
shitty pitcher? are you fucking kidding me? a perfect game i garenty all of you non atletice fat asses who say hes a shitty pitcher couldnt get 1 batter out so shut the up!
this incident was good for galarraga and good for baseball. another perfect game... thats cool but this made more news for an otherwise average pitcher, and it showed that 2 people in MLB can be real stand up guys... and for a league with so much cheating and controversy thats a good thing
This guy is my hero. I am a die hard Tigers fan and I know MILLIONS of people who would have strangled Jim Joyce on the spot, including myself, but he didn't. When i encounter a situation in life that should have ended differently, I think of this man. I just think to myself "This is how it's mean't to be" even if I don't like it. He handled this like a true man with such class. Looking back on this, yeah, it would have been cool to have a perfect game in Detroit, but i learned a lot from this.
He responded so beautifully. His reaction.. his class.. his almost amusement by it all really I think helps baseball more than instant replay or revenue sharing ever will come close to doing. Armando will forever be one of the best pitchers in my mind.... And I'm a Phillies fan who saw Halladay's perfecto be completed.
Hey this game inspired me to write a song called "Nobody's Perfect" A tribute song for Armando Gallarraga that is about asking Bud Selig to turn the call around. Let me know what you think. Video on my page!
@MikeyAceStudios The problem is if Selig decides to overturn the call then people are going to say that he should overrule other calls as well, and to me that would just be bad for baseball.
The difference between Galarraga's 28-out and Haddix' 36-out near misses is that Galarraga's Tigers actually were perfect through to the final out, whereas Haddix' Pirates lost the perfecto with an error after 12-2/3 innings. In other words, Galagaraga actually would have gotten the perfect game if Joyce hadn't blown the call, while Haddix' perfect game was never completed because his team provided no runs and made an error. That said, of the two pitching feats, Haddix' was the more amazing!
Once, a great pitcher, who never cursed, drank, smoked, or womanized played the game. One time he had to cover first base to take the throw from the first baseman. The runner appeared to be out easily but Evans, the umpire, called the runner safe. All hell broke loose. Johnson slowly walked passed the scene and said, "Leave Evans alone boys. I missed the bag." Nothing more was said. That man was Walter Johnson, the greatest pitcher and most respected man to play the game. One in a million.
Racism. I'ma play that card. Old white supremist Jim Joyce wasn't havin no spic get a perfect game on his watch, even if it meant making the most blatantly wrong umpire call many can name. It's a damn shame.
Don't mess up things Armando...Narcissism & Racism that's the problem with Jim Joyce...if you were gringo, that assholesnake NEVER-EVER would dare to make that kind of mistake...
i guess if you're gonna have the third perfect game of the month, the only way to get recognition is if something ridiculous happens on the last play.. what a classy pitcher
A real special guy here. A good portion of today's athletes are full of themselves, but this guy is at the opposite end of the spectrum. His family should be just as proud of him for the way he handled himself off the field as for the way he pitched that game. A real role model who probably had a very fine upbringing.
Hes a winner - he is the shit and he teaches the rest of the world how they should act in the face of a "bad call" I wish him the best in his career and he is now and always will be an ICON
@aldejesuso , Do you mean exactly 28 outs? If so, you're right. But back in '59 there was a guy pitching for the Pirates. Harvey Haddix threw a 36 out perfect game......and lost.
@aldejesuso Don't forget Harvey Haddix who, with Pittsburgh in 1959, was perfect for 12 innings (36 outs), only to lose the game 1-0 in the 13th inning on an error, intentional walk and a double.
As far as I'm concerned, the guy pitched a perfect game and I'm not likely to change my feelings about it. At least, not in this lifetime. Nuff said!
