One reason might be that In freestyle there is no such thing as an illegal slam - in folkstyle the thrower is partly responsible for the safety of the other wrestler so high amplitude throws are discouraged. Folkstyle also emphasizes wrestling from all positions - you can't be passive on the bottom or on top once you go to the mat so its not any better or worse than freestyle, just different... (cont.)

Also, in america is a wrestler wants to compete internationally, they will have to do more than just wrestle in high school - the path to national or international competition is not provided there. So the wrestler must get training and compete outside of school and off-season - this is where freestyle and greco-roman are learned by those athletes. Most off-season wrestlers compete in all three styles at younger ages! :-)

Nobody can defend his ankle pick well enough after he shoots to eliminate it, the only reasonable defence would be to change your stance to protect your legs, but seeing Cael wrestle he could probobly get around that or just work the head all match.
