  • 1st to 2nd chorus by Joshua in key of F. Hah.

  • Just phenomenal, completely amazing anybody who says this is lacking musicality does not understand how each of these techniques could be implemented in a normal piece, and shown all in one setting is more impressive. All I've gotta say is fantastic, and as for Redman not being able to reach the partial at the very end, I've been there before and by that time I'm sure his reed had called it quits.

  • i find joshua's parts much more interesting

  • Two words: Bad Ass.

  • Why is there a random picture of Paul Gonsalves at 3:00?

  • 3:25 joshua quotes a sonny rollins lick from a recording of tenor madness. found it as interesting...

  • I just asked a professional plate I know who some good "crazy players" were. Coincidentally these were the first two name's he gave me. I always thought I was the only knew who played like that because I've never heard anything so brilliant in my life. from the sound of this performance I think they play two different styles so people shouldn't be saying one smoked the other. However each one does have qualities that appear to be more represented in this video. I was really digging the mid rang

  • Toma no meu viu...

  • Come on guys, can't we leave the judgments aside and just see two amazing musicians (they are) having a hell of a time?

  • Carter smokes redman...

  • 本格的なジャズのフルバンドの演奏がユーチューブできけるとは?

    感激

  • they aren't competing, those cats are just boppin'

  • this duo is the shit... they can swing with the best of them... proud to say I've seen them both perform... wish I had seen them together... thanks for posting!

  • The look on Redman's face at 5:25 haha

  • Its clear those 30 dislikes, are people who pissed their pants while playing a solo on the sax

  • James Carter is my cousin seriously

  • sorry, didn't make it past 5:40. and don't feed me no elitist jazz talk, i love jazz, swing and big band, just got tired of the two trying to showboat one another. and if i had to choose, I was a little more moved by carter's playin, though i usually like redman.

  • ı saw that

  • Excellente version de ce standard avec 2 solistes exceptionnels!

  • "If you got the technique and I got a good sound, I'll beat you every time. You can play a thousand notes and I can play one note and wipe you out." That's what Dewey Redman said. All About It....

  • The negative comments tell me that good music is beyond many unfortunates who will sadly never get it. Listen to the notes and you may discover magic but then maybe you won't. Instead of disliking, go back to your electronica and metal. This is real live acoustic music, brilliantly played and you are obviously on the wrong channel.

  • @daverow49 So basically is what you are saying is that you are better than everyone else, because you enjoy watching two guys masturbate musically on stage

  • I wish Carter's studio work represented his abilities better.

  • The Impossible!! :)

  • The insanity starts at 6:18. Lol, they're just goofing off. XD

I wish I could do that.

  • the back rounds are way to loud

  • 1:06 Donna Lee quote.

  • Absolutely raw....Love it.

  • I like the expression on JC's face when he hits the #11 at 0:59 ...he's like, 'yeah, you like that, don't you, bitch' haha

  • 3:25 awesome:D flageolets ftw;)

  • what we need is carter vs redman vs chris potter :D

  • @walsh93jazz no, what we need is carter vs redman vs chris potter vs eric alexander

  • @walsh93jazz chris potter would destroy them both! but that would be sick

  • At 6:18 they go crazy, at 6:49 the band leader's face says everything, no more comment necessary...

  • I like a lot this video!!! What a body has the sound of James Carter, it blows away Joshua Redman!!! Incredible!!! I never see Carter plays like this.....I feel more american the sound of Carter, I don´t know if he uses here an american horn but it seems to do it....

  • at 5:29 the lead trumpet was probably passing out...

  • Un régal pour les oreilles ces 2 solistes!

  • No real musicality here, just athletics. Its admirable that these guys have such control over their instruments, but they should be ashamed for performing in such a tasteless manner

  • @TheAdawg1789 Don't be such a prude. They're just doing some JATP style shredding. It's all in good fun and certainly there is heaps of musicality to be found here.

  • @qsaras1 In the JATP recordings which i believe you are referencing one can hear the musicians developing new avenues of improvisation in real time. In my opinion this is what makes those recordings so exciting. It's quite the opposite here; both musicians are using the vocabulary of past masters, and not in a particularly innovative fashion. Not that there is anything particularly wrong with this, but it means that more attention should go towards crafting logical, concise solos

  • @TheAdawg1789 Thats so untrue. Athletics without musicality is Kenny G. :P

  • JC is blowing a 'BLASHAUS' 1926/27 Conn New Wonder hybrid with Yamaha/Custom keys by Martin Suter on a Pan Am neck with custom Buck Rogers octave mech on a lawton 7* bb. JC now blows a Lawton 11*BB 'special' (bronze).Crazy stuff but dead easy with the best gear. J

  • Who is the men that appear in the minute 3:02?

  • @carxofanvinagra It is Paul Gonsalves of Duke Ellington fame.

  • Woah.... Both of those guys are true masters on the tenor. Very different from each other, but both masters in their own right. I feel lucky to live in the same time as these greats.... I've got no words to describe that video. All that I can even do to react is to go play tenor until dawn.....

  • Carter is the epitomy of great improvisation, highest caliber of playing and unrival emotional content.

  • Has anyone transcribed this yet? And what sax is Carter playing on? At first I thought this was a Conn (because of the split bell keys) but it has a modern G# cluster.

  • @jazzmann1984 I think its a Chu Berry with Yamaha keywork? Could be wrong though

  • Comment removed

  • Fail of the video in 2:20!!!! hahaha who's playing the solo?? Carter or Redman? :)

  • @Marinauer its both of them

  • @mike197592 No, it's in the solo of Redman, look for the minute and see it

  • @mike197592 No, it's in the solo of Redman, look for the minute and see it

  • Comment removed

  • Two of the best.

  • 5:25 - Redman realises he's completely out-ridiculoused

  • A certain empathy between these two great musicians. Note Carter's copy of double-note playing at 2:30 to mimic Redman's earlier use of them. His ears (and feet) are listening intently while Redman is playing! Awesome playing by both men who are capable of feeding off each other.

  • That transition from a Bb blues to F (when Josh starts his solo) throws me off for the first few bars every time lol

  • Does anyone else notice that it's James Carter playing at 2:20 and then it switches back to Redman?

  • @bbbiggs haha what a bad edit...

  • @bbbiggs I never noticed that before XD I'm usually looking at the creepy conductor

  • @bbbiggs ya whats up with that?

  • @bbbiggs Ha!!!! That's funny...!

  • JC soundmaster!

  • Redman blows Carters jive shit out of the water

  • 2:29 Billie's Bounce!

  • 5:12 Now's the Time!

  • 3:07 Perhaps!

  • these guys are both such beasts.

K checking Yoshi's schedule again, K Checking wallet again ;P

  • You must like this comment if the entire video you were thinking, "I need to go practice, after I'm done wiping the drool from my face."

  • @bashong122 disagreed sorry. i think the brain has to be involved at a conscious level. that's how we generate ideas, decide where we're heading next melodically and how you're going to construct a solo. without that you're playing just ends up being a whole bunch of lick and patterns you've practiced the shit out of, not true improvisation IMO

  • Slide Hampton on 3rd bone xD man that lead trumpet is like the annoying fly lol

  • I love how Redman keeps cool and calm while Carter goes nuts. Different approaches.

  • That was fucking amazing.

    **Find fucked**

  • realmente incrível! eles são os melhores!

  • remove versus from the title. they are just jammin' :D

  • @Muse333 But this way the projected rivalry entices more views. Who wouldn't want to see a sax battle between two greats? The more people who get to hear this, the better. But it truly is a straight up jam. They're just chillin

  • both of these guys are two of the best jazz musicians on the planet... however i see a difference between them... redman seems to be more into the musicality of the solo, where as carter is completely devoted to the technical difficulty of his solos.

  • Redman gets my vote.

  • Music at its best!!!

  • The trumpet lead is off his head .... Higher Higher aaaaaaa squeeeeeeek awsome !

  • Carter has better sound effects and follows the scales up and down, but Redman has better syncopation, jazzy rythmns and scale jumping ability in my opinion. Both are top notch players. I love when Redman smiles at 5:22 because he knows he'd be battling Carter on his "turf" if he tried to keep up "tit for tat" on the sound effects. Each resort to their own "mastery" which makes this song more complete as a whole. Fanjazztic!

  • Redman is a fucking groovemaster.

  • 2:20

  • carter fantastic!

  • Who is this conductor?!

  • 26 people do not have a sole, we really are living amongst the dead!

  • @rishsn I could just as easily that 685 people are unthinking morons. Try to remember that nothing is absolute, especially not in art

  • btw what year was this?

  • who the hell is that in lead trumpet? amazing

  • Chills down my spine. Amazing!

  • Wow....Amazing. All I can say.

But the lead trumpet is a monster too!

  • They can, but choose not to.

  • Beautifuly Amazing! Wow! Redman Highly Simple, Carter Highly classy! More than a gift... A Blessing!

  • 1:10- sax fart of epic proportions

  • O Carter deu um Laço no Joshua, kkkkkkkkkkk

    dessa vêz pelomenos.....

  • joshua the best !!

  • i heard these gentlemen used to 'experiment' at summer camp? can anyone confirm this? it's a good thing there is a conductor.

  • Man Joshua's laugh at 5:25 is very telling.....

Both monster players, my vote goes for Redman though.

  • Awesome performance!

  • This performance really demonstrates the difference between these two. Redman is a musician, Carter is a performer. I go to shows to hear musicians. I go to the circus to see performers.

And I bet James Carter wasn't happy that Redman also knew every single one of his smoke-and-mirrors tricks.

  • @fergman333 if James Carter is so "smoke-and-mirrors," then how come nobody else in the world can play like James Carter?

  • haha whats the sound at 1:10? a real low note??

  • Tanto o Joshua quanto o Carter,

    são influências indiscutíveis,

    muito bom o vídeo !

  • Was waren denn das für 26 Idioten, die den Falschen Button gedrückt haben?

  • Carter has that lack of inhibition that reminds me so much of Sonny Rollins. Like there's no brain involved whatsoever (in the best way possible), everything just comes out without getting clouded by overthinking, just raw, unbridled musicality. Having said that, Redman has done some of the best recordings of the last ten years. Some might view it as a "battle," I view it as one of the greatest delights on Earths.

  • @bashong122 @bashong122 Perhaps but listen to Carter with the World Sax Quartet playing alto. Not really sonny rollins at all

  • @bashong122 can you tell 2 things well 3 !!! ? what is that touching of the reed that carter does everytime he rest ?. 2- why does joshua laughs when carter does a crazy sound in 5:25 ? 3. do you know how to make thee sax laugh like James does in 6:29 ?

  • @bashong122 I disagree about Redman making the best records in the last ten years. He's made some good to really good ones, but in my opinion he hasn't knocked anything out of the park.

This video is a great time had by ALL!

  • Both great players, but Carter can be an amazing madman. I'm thinking of his soprano sax solo on 'Along Came Betty" which gets further and further over the top; every time you think he's run out of things to say, he goes one better... That said, I think "cutting contests" basically are not much about art, more about testosterone.

Muchas gracias.

  • also that right there is an excellent conductor

  • they're really talking to each other during 3:21-4:15

  • two very different cats, different styles and approaches, but both being absolute virtuosity on their instruments, amazing harmonic knowledge and both of course having impeccable ears on them

    two great modern players

  • carter has the licks and the technique. Redman tried to emulate it... pulled it off a lot of the time but Carter comes out on top there. Carter wasn't as much melody friendly in this one. tells less of a story than redman. Carter did repeat some lines - not Redman.. but Carter does have a more range on the instrument. Would love to see a rematchh!!

  • this has to be one of the best jazz preformances. ever.

  • @Gatorsfreak21 Well, just for the record, this is done before in a much better way by there ancestors. Listen to 'Mingus at Carnegie Hall' from 1974, especially 'Perdido' (22') with, hold your breath: George Adams, Hamiet Bluiett, Roland Kirk, John Handy, Ch. McPherson and John Faddis. They are only backed up by Mingus, Don Pullen and Dannie Richmond. And listen how Roland Kirk copies George Adams exact solo on 'C Jam Blues' (24'). Mingus called it: "He was cuttin' him at his own shit". Harsh!

  • at 2:20 it's supposed to be joshua playing but it shows james instead haha.

  • Why do these guys even HAVE a band behind them?

  • this is conversation

  • Carter's got the technical ability, but Redman has the soul. Both are a hell of a lot better than me and I don't really see a loser, just two guys having a sick jam session

  • @idymface Redman is half black half Jewish

  • Bonito documento, dos estilos diferentes pero compatibles...

  • Bonito documento, dos estilos diferentes pero compatibles...

  • sick

  • i wish the big band would shut the fuck up! so i can hear the saxes damn!

  • it's the band arrangement that sounds over-the-top to me.......how can anyone have a cutting contest like THAT????

a bit like two men running out and having a pistol duel on a hill that's being blasted by artillery.....what's the point when everything's going to hell anyway? (like this arrangement)

  • Two cornball motherfuckers in suits

  • Dewey was better than both of them anyway

  • @jumpsteady1

    Who is Dewey?

  • @JH5251 Dewey Redman, great sax player and father of Joshua.

  • you know, I've been playing for three years, and I can do most of the things that James Carter exhibits in this video. The real talent (although both of them are amaing) lies with Redman. He not only exhibits an excellent tone, and mastery of his instrument (as it is way harder to play in the smooth flowing style that he does), but he "speaks" the language. His Improv contains words, ideas, and sentences whereas Carters contain squeaks.

  • @sigmayacht

but technique wise, they are almost even

    but who cares about that.

    I prefer redman here but.

They both are very good but with their own styles

  • @sigmayacht

    plus

carter has a really resistant setup that takes up a whole lot of air.

  • so awesome!! two niggas at one night!!!

  • so cool!! two niggas....hahahaha....

  • Josh talked about this in a masterclass at Stanford Jazz Residency, he said he wouldn't do it again if he got called and that he found the whole concept of the tenor "battle" to be anti musical and that he'd tried to make the best of the experience, and also that he has huge respect for James.

  • Redman destroys.....clearly

  • Dont forget the Tenor battles of the past. This aint a new phenomenon its just part of jazz music .

  • My,my!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW fantastic! nothing like retro jazz... all real sound!

  • I realize this isn't exactly a duel to prove the talent of one musician or another, but James Carter clearly overshadows Joshua Redman in this video. Carter makes it look so effortless. Redman is an outstanding saxophone player, but Carter is just so perfectly fluid. I've never heard a tenor player that can hit such amazingly high octave slurs and drop right down into a low C/Bb without even flinching. Incredible.

  • except the point "this is a great video" I totally disagree with adawg1789! they both don't "beat" each other, but interact and complement each other! you saw them smiling at 5:20 and thereafter? that has nothing to do with "gladiators"!

  • @MrKenobe Well I can't really prove this, but to me Redman's smiles look uncomfortable as though he realizes that the way they are playing is musically unconscionable, and James Carter's smile are clearly for the crowd and demonstrate what a "showman" he is.

  • AMAZING SLAPTONGUE POWERZ!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I liked SOME of that stuff...but turned into a serious jerking off session... Some interesting sounds and technique..here and there.. Have to admit..it had me smilin'..? ..not exactly sure why..

  • YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! This is sexy!

  • @adawg1789, man, if you think the point of music is to "beat" other players with technique, i can only feel sorry for you.

  • LOL Carter playing at 2:20

  • you can only hear the sraight no chaser part

  • @saxmaster25 Billie's Bounce at 2:29, I Mean You at 2:55. There are some other tune in there too, but I can't name them off the top of my head right now.

  • who so you think won that battle beetween redman and carter??

  • soooo this video is kind of like having ella fitzgerald sing next to janis joplin. ella sounds like amazing while janis sings like she's got a cock in her mouth right? much like carter's tone. haaaahahahaha

  • @adawg1789

I don't see how your response have anything to do with my comment. Please explain.

  • what was that thing carter did at 6:30?

  • Okay I have read many of the commnets, and let me clue some of you in. Tenor battles has been a jazz tradition for many years. The tenor sax is to jazz what the guitar is to country music. In jazz such duels are called "cutting heads". You had Rollins/Coltrane, Gordon/Ammons, Young/Hawkins and on and on. And don't think for one moment, that during any of those battles, the axe men were not playing to the crowd. After all it is the crowd who crowns the next Boss Tenor.

  • @BossTenor If what you say is true, then "legit" musicians are completely justified in looking down on jazz

  • Of course it's only you're opinion, once again of what a "legit" musician is. I'm sure no "legit" Jazz musician such as the above, Trane, Lacy, Mingus etc. would give two pickles what you or your "legit" musicians looked down upon. Jazz has never been a extremely popular music anyhow, nor based on euro-centric music ideology. Continue peering down and the brothers and sisters will continue with the music as normal. I'm watching the vid. where Trane kicks Getz's ass - I mean share a moment. Ciao

  • @outersun All I meant was that saying that Trane or Sonny played to the crowd demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of their true legacy. If we truly consider jazz to be an art form, then we ought to hold jazz musicians to the same standard to which we hold other artists. The notion that jazz musicians simply should play "soulful" music divorced from the intellect and engineered to work the unthinking masses into a frenzy demonstrates belittles the music and those who create it

  • @outersun Also for the record, I agree that Coltrane is a greater improvisor than Getz, but probably not for the same reasons as you

  • cool

  • it's the fatcat session of my nightmares

  • Comment removed

  • Good playing! Carter was meant to be the next "Great" in jazz some years back. His technique, range, knowledge of the tradition, and multi-instrumental mastery were unmatched. Good to see Redman step out of the soporific confines of MOR jazz and show that he is his father's son.

  • ¡Wow... estupendo ! me sorprende la sonoridad de Carter se aprecia el trabajo de horas de estudio en las famosas notas largas

  • what big band is this?

  • That wasn't a Duel! that was an Execution!!! someone Got Played into the Shed !

  • That was all the way L I V E !!!!!!!

Our generation is still producing great axe men !

  • Great footage !!!

  • Both sound awesome. I've yet to experience Carter (only because I haven't bought any of his stuff), but I'm a huge Redman fan. I think I just became a Carter fan as well.

  • Redman destroyed Carter, no competition. In my opinion, Carter should stick to bari. His tone on bari is unmatched, but you cannot beat Redman when it comes to tenor. Tone alone wins it, not to mention substance.

  • In terms of technical mastery, I'd say that Carter wins. Personally though, I like Redman. His solos sound better as a whole. Carter does have his moments, but his solo feels more segmented. Like he finds a good idea, but he doesn't roll with it, he just drops it and goes for something else. They're both amazing, its really just a judgment call.

  • @Paradox484

LOL ! Carter over Redman in technical mastery??? Sure, if you consider honks, squeaks, squawks, and other sound effects as " technical mastery".

Redman is the superior saxophonist any way you look at it IMO.
