@SDupe44 my feelings exactly. I first saw this video a year or so ago, and my first question pertained to his practice routine. When I hear people sing the praises of Mike Portnoy, I immediately think back to Virgil's demonstration in this video. While I don't like to compare per se, Mike Portnoy has nothing on Virgil Donati. Especially when it comes to soloing. Virgil's technique and power are unlike anything I have seen behind a drum kit. What's more, he seems like a pretty cool cat too.

@AAndrews1968 I love Portnoy and I also don't like to do the comparison thing with musicians. I personally think Virgil is however light years better than Portnoy. That's just fact. This isn't a knock to Portnoy or any other drummer obviously. Virgil is simply not of this world. I love his paradiddle vid where he does a paradiddle with his right foot and hand and a double paradiddle with his left foot and hand at the same time. My head implodes just thinking about it, LoL.

What I like even more is how humble and kind he is. Watching him in the Dream Theater auditions was impressive both musically and personally. He is a true master of his craft, yet possesses a demeanor that only adds to his reputation. Thomas Lang is another drummer that makes my head explode, but in a good way. LOL....

I don't understand why people are comparing this guy to Bobby Jarzombek, and Mike Portnoy. If anything, this guy is most like Thomas Lang, where Thomas actually does syncopated rhythms and double bass grooves compared to double stroking the bass and doing cymbal cross overs for 2 minutes.

Man Virgil is great. Sure this could seem just super fast double pedaling but if you read between the lines he is playing really complicated stuff and blinding tempos. He is clearly not suited for dream theater that would be someone like Thomas Lang(Style more similar to Portnoy's) or Marco Minneman. Also in regard of the high toms, they are called projection toms, they are just decorative purposes, even with that purpose he still uses them incredible well and blending in with his playing.

@TheMakyoura virgil donati, marco minneman and thomas lang have more complicated styles of drumming than mike portnoy. thats why dream theater chose bobby jarzombek as their new drummer because he isnt as complex. mike portnoy is one of my favorites, but his playing style is actually much simpler. he focuses more on the arrangement of the drum parts. virgil, marco, lang, harrison are all guys with much more complex styles.

And, Harrison actually focuses on making simple drum parts, while both Lang and Minnemann play with the music and their drum parts on albums aren't actually that complex (Thomas Lang recorded a lot of pop records, Victoria Beckham, Robby Williams, Sugababes, while Minnemann played with Nina Hagen, some German rock groups and his stuff on other records isn't that complex either)

@ryder187mac i i actually misspoke. i apologize for that. bobby jarzombek is being considered for mike portnoys replacement. DT has not actually released any information yet. i love how gavin harrison makes odd times sound musical and simple. marco is just a monster. his work with illegal aliens and necrophagist was amazing. im actually not a huge fan of thomas lang, but his technique videos are good. virgil is a god amongst mortals, and continues to impress me.

@soundmind529 Agreed with everything, but the big rumour now is that Mike Mangini is the new drummer :) He resigned from Berklee in December (or November, but around that time anyway), has already worked with Labrie so he had the connection in DT, and has said before that he wants to end his career with a band. The man is an absolute monster and I'm actually slightly disappointed, videos from his clinics are so damn entertaining... he can do anything.
