  • Not really supposed to do that with a shimano chain...

  • good one Thanks

  • dude thanks ,

  • What is the name hove that tool

  • Thanks for the vid!

  • i work in a bicycleshop... and if you would do like this on your first day, i would not be impressed... sorry, there are much more tips & tricks to show on this subject in less time...

  • @Begbucks Congrats to you for being a "Master Technician" on bicycles. Your parents must be proud.

  • does this work with a bmx half link chain? jw

  • i feel stupider after listening to u

  • not at all what i was wanting

  • fyi all your "stretched" chains I trash pick to ride on half beat cogs & chainrings for 2-3 k more life than thought possible.

    UBI Certified Advanced Master Tech

  • Very helpful and not boring. Thanks :)

  • It helps also to use an S- hook made from a piece of coat hanger about 6" long (just bend the ends enough to hook the chain, with a pair of pliers. )

  • while replacing the chain the pin popped all the way out, and is now next to impossible to get back in, is there anything that I can easily do to solve the problem, or is there a different type of tool I need to be using?

  • @bretonmckenzie You will not be able to get the pin back into the link. If you were installing a new chain and still have some left-over chain links you can use them to replace the link you can't use anymore. The general rule of thumb when using a chain tool is once the chain tool pin is tight up to pin on link you turn the handle 5 and 1/2 times, no more. You should practise this technique on an old chain to get good practise before doing it on the chain to go on your bike.

  • @bretonmckenzie By left-over chain link I mean from the new chain not from an old chain. Do not use old chain links on a new chain.

  • Why is it so easy for you to take out the pin?

Mine gets to a point and it just will not budge out any more.

  • @randomfatguy1 probably because he does that a lot and has a bit more arm work-out :) or, the alignment isn't quite right, try to keep the pin very well centered in the tool if the tool allows for some play. Perhaps his tool is a bit better machined and centers the pin better, or maybe he just kept a better eye on it being well centered.

  • @randomfatguy1 It won't work if the chain is under tension.

  • Bugger I need a chain remover! What happened to the old idea of a split pin style of thing. More money to be spent. Thanks for the guide though spadout.

  • Are you able to use the same technique with a half link bmx chain?

  • So i have the cc-2 chain checker and when i try it, i put at the 0 mark and it barely fits like i have to give it a little push so i can fit in

So do i need to replace the chain?

  • DAMN IT!!! that thing that you were pushing out....well mine fell off and now its hard as fuck to get it back in...FML! how the hell do i get it back in..its not going in at all...someone help!

  • NVM GOT ONE!

  • CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT MAJOR DEPARTMENT STORE SELLS THIS " CHAIN RIVET EXTRACTOR?"

  • Thanks for the demo.

I bought the chain tool from Walmart and new chain from Canadian Tire.

For less than 20 bucks, I changed the old, bent chain and showed my 13 and 15 year olds how the chain and chain tool work together. A lengthy spray with WD40 and the bike was ready to go.

    Well demonstrated and explained.

  • @Iceman20067 Sounds good but, hopefully you are NOT using wd40 to lubricate so much as too clean your with?

  • how many time can u say chain in a sentence

  • i was going to make a stupid comment but they were all taken up.

  • Thank you can u get it from anywhere?

  • thanks man!!! i didn't know how to take the chain out, and i was so close to use the bolt cutters!

  • This guy sounds EXACTLY like one of the hosts on the Stuff You Should Know podcast.

  • "ready to ride"?

what about the chain oil brother!?

  • @thermonuclearwarfare Is usually on new chains already.

  • I have a chain that is 93 feet long! How do I install this???

  • Thank you :-)

  • these chains dont FUCKING come off!! i bought a goddamn kmc chain for my bike and its fucking 5 feet long and i cant remove a link!? NOT EVENS GODS BIKE HAS A 5 FOOT LONG CHAIN!!!

  • nice but how do u take out chain links to make it smaller??????

  • @yummyummfish Use the chain to remove a set(s) (you can't just remove one otherwise they won't connect correctly) as required.

  • @markanite thanks

  • marbles that voice is cutting right thru me you are unlikeable

  • i put my chain on and it was loose, so i took out a link and now it wont fit on

  • Comment removed

  • @ElegantlyWasted04 why should a bike shop be responsible for your lack of knowledge?

  • Comment removed

  • @ElegantlyWasted04 Try forming complete sentences with proper grammar next time so I can actually understand what you're saying please, thank you.

  • When u take the chain off first does it mater what pin you push on to break the chain

  • my pin came out and idk how to put it back in. HELP!!!!

  • @hellraizorxx dude my pin came out too and i cant put it back in hahahaha

  • @hellraizorxx to the bike shop! They have a tool to put it back as chain tool wont do it

  • good job on this video. this was the best one i found on youtube

  • i got a cheap chaintool from tesco and it messed up the chain

  • @darrenjs92 Sorry to hear that. It's probably a combination of a cheap tool and a cheap chain. It's well worth getting the right equipment (search Spadout.com for ct 3 for the classic).

  • @darrenjs92 i got one from Clas Olsen and it just fell apart 1st time.Lucky for me it fell apart at home when i tried to replace the existing one after noticing a split in a link. If that had happened yesterday i would have been f@@ked i was 22 miles from home.Park Tool from now on.

  • @darrenjs92 then thats your problem for cheaping out.

  • @darrenjs92 if its cheap its bad

  • Great video. Thanks. The only thing was the word "out." It kinda threw me off on the pronunciation. (joking)

  • i Installed new Chain on my Norco Sasquatch, but when i try to ride fast, it won't follow, just if like it wasn't 8 speed chain, though it is. all i hear when i try to go fast and a the 7th or 8th speed, is TACK TACK, when it's lower than 7th it does it too! though less intense. Can you help me!? is it Derailleur Maintenance or... ? Cassette is very healthy too ! and chain was Lubed! :( i wanna go ride :(

  • @ItzizAustin Possibly. Do you have a link to the model you are trying to use. It sounds like it's not correctly aligned and is hitting the side of the chain or something. It shouldn't be nearly that difficult.

  • first try and it worked after watching this...before i watched it i was fucking with the damn chain for about two hours.....thanks dude youre the best.

  • haha the end. "now we have a loose chain and were ready to ride" should of worded that better.

  • Thanks a lot your vid helped a ton!

  • any way without all the tools? i doont have them-

  • @iSawZezima Not really. Sorry. They are cheap though and commonly available (like on Spadout.com).

  • @spadoutDOTcom well ok thanx

  • @iSawZezima yeah a hammer nail and bench vise

  • my pin went all the way through, anyway to put it back in???

  • @nodnarb5981 Use the chain tool. Align the pin perfectly and slowly apply pressure.

  • You didn't show how to thread the chain over the gears, etc

  • nice video, one tech question though ... if you put a new chain on and it starts to slip when you ride it hard, is it the cassette? I already ordered a new one, because the bike was riden with single chain for 12 years putting around 2k miles/year on it. what do you think?

  • @seasonedtoker Yes,

The cassette and front rings will wear out as the chain stretches. I would advise you to limit riding on the new chain as much as possible until these parts are replaced.

  • @spadoutDOTcom good thing about front rings is that they were replaced somewhere in between. I checked those and they seem fine to me, I even got a chance to take a peak at a brand new deore chainrings and the looked pretty much alike. chain mostly skips on the rear from 5th to 8th gear, the section where I did most of the wheelies. :)

  • @spadoutDOTcom

Nice video, your voice is very clear and the instructions are clear.

I replaced mine and it's slips more than before. I think my cassette has shaped itself with the old loose chain.

But it's a cheap bike, might buy a new one rather than replace the cassette.

  • @seasonedtoker Also the dirtier the chain the faster it will eat away at the groves in the cassette and the front chain ring. You should keep the chain clean and if it's been 12 years you probably need to replace the front chain rings as well as the cassette.

  • is there any way to remove the chain pin without a removing tool that you used?because i have a spcialized hotrock but it has no chain and it is dificult to get the pin out of another bike chain without that TOOL you have.

info on where to get one, how much $, and if there is any other shortcut way to get the pin out of the link.?

thank for your time its much appreciated spadoutDOTcom

  • @waldonripper Sorry about the delay. You must have the chain tool, and you don't actually take the pin out of the link. You just push it part of the way to fix the chain and then push it back in.

  • Easy enough. Thanks for the help! Straight and to the point :)

  • Thanks for posting the video very helpful

  • Couldn't be better! One question:

Shimano instruction mentioned something about "end pin" and "reinforced connecting pin" that none of them should be removed, otherwise it will damage the chain. Is that correct, or I can pick any link?

  • @konradon Yes, this is a link pin with a circle on it, opposed to two parallel lines. Do not go use the pin with a circle on it, use any other one link away. As well, make sure with Shimano chains to use their connecting rivets because their pins aren't designed to be re-usable.

  • Thanks, this has been so helpful. Just finishing up my first fixer, a Raliegh Technium Supercourse, 7 rear on the freewheel (Malllard). I put my chain together and it was sticking bad, this ad helped.

  • @insanetechdecker Go to Spadout.com and search for "ct3". Thanks!

  • is this only for newer chains

  • @Lg801901 Similar techniques can be used to fix a chain on the trail (presuming it wasn't damaged).

  • you're kiddin' me:O

  • Thanks! Fantastic How Too video. Very good details, closeups, lighting and clear voice. Thanks for having this available on you tube!

  • @hdphoto thanks!

  • thank you for the clarity.

  • Best chain tool explanation on youtube so far.

  • @dinogrower Thank you!

  • fantastic post no nonsense-clear and easy- thanks now i know how to use my breaker!

  • @TheCurls1 NP and thanks for the feedback!

  • its hard as fk doin it with out 1 off thn lol

  • was that loyd grossman?

  • @gingerhippy69 dunno

  • do you know how to make your bike chain tighter ?

  • @MRshakalohawaii either remove links and shorten it or pull your back tier out more

  • If only my links came out that easy :(

  • how much money is the chain tool?

  • Starts at 7.99. Go to Spadout and search for "cc-3". Thanks!

  • nice, this vid gives a good close up of the tool work.

  • to braik the chain use a axe

  • Many thanks, after watching this I successfully changed my chain with no problems. :-)

  • Helow friends i want to know what is the name and make of the tool that is used in the video and from where i can order it please let me know

  • Hi! Go to Spadout and search for CT-3. That's what you want. Thanks!

  • We've made about 50 already (go to our profile for a full list). Are we missing something?

  • thanx

  • some good information in that short little vid. thanks, brutha.

  • cool i didn't kno abou this till i saw this video i think thats why my bike gets locked or maybei have it to lose

  • Hey If I do this will..Well my bike chain wheel is moving but my chain ist moving with the pedals when they go around If i do this will that fi it?

  • This probably means that your chain has fallen off the chainring (next to the pedals). Pull the rear dérailleur toward the chainring (loosening the chain), loop it back on the chainring and turn the pedals. If this doesn't work let me know more details.

  • where can you get that chain tool? and does this tool work with go kart chains too?

  • go to Spadout and search for "ct 3". Regarding go kart. Likely if they are any where near the size of a bike chain but honestly I don't know go karts.

  • go to danscomp, they have a cheap 5 dollar one that works just fine

  • do you know how to put the pin back into the chain if it falls out? i accidentally pushed it out with my chainbreaker and i dont wanna have to buy a new chain :s

  • Excellent tutorial

  • so can i put the chain breaker pin on any link. n pop out any link bc i need to shorten my chain

  • Yep. Takes a little practice but it's not bad.

  • that was good vid

  • I have looked at many "Bike Chain" vids. This one is by far one of the best. It was very well explained with good camera visuals & sound levels - excellent

  • I too wish to thank you for this video! Good job!

  • This video is very very helpful. Thanks for sharing. Finally, I know how to install my new chain.

  • Excellent instructions, thanks for sharing. I've always wondered why there were two slots.

  • Thanks for the video. I havent token a chain out in years and forgot how. Now i know. I dont use a chain tool though, i used and will probably just use a hammer and a pick or a puncher tool..

  • thanks for posting... informative!

  • NP. Glad you liked it.

  • like that guy said exept not just a shadow chain, its called a half link chain

  • You should definitely make a video showing us how to assemble, and disassemble the Shadow V2 Bmx chain. It's a very hard chain to break, and or repair. Nice video though.

  • thank for the help...no offence but u sound rather camp.....

  • lol and np

  • I slso use a Park Tools chain tool. Works very well! Not quite like the one in the video, only has half a handle. It is very sturdy, and I have used it to shorten many chains, and still it works as good as new. I ordered mine from Nashbar.

  • Ya they are very handy. Thanks for the feedback!

  • where can u get this chain tool

  • Go to spadout and search for "Park Tool Ct-3". That's the model discussed in this video.

  • does this work on bmx bikes???

  • Yes it works the same.
