  • Wow she is very good!! Did they actually do this before battle or is it just myth? Good upload:)

  • she did the last step wrong she didnt cross it over or anything plus its not supposed to go that fast

  • So wonderfully light-footed.

  • Excellent dance!

  • Scottish jumpstyle!:D

  • The Scottish did more to "invent" the modern, and free, world than most other nationalities combined. I am thankful to have a Scottish surname. Alba gu brath! Isn'tthe Highland Fling the origin behind American Square Dances?

  • I don't really see why a dance is causing all of this strife. As I understand it, while I was visiting (and no, I'm not a native Scot), it was told to our group that this is a tradition that began back with the Celts and that the men would actually be the ones who would perform this dance before they went into battle.

I posted this because I thought that it was an amazing show of athleticism and a beautiful piece of Scottish culture as it was told to us. If it offends you, then don't watch it.

  • As a native Gael, I find this absurd and offensive as I live my culture. This is not any kind of reasonable representation of the culture of Scotland it is an effeminate pastiche, reminiscent of Brigadoon and Balmorality. If you wish to enlighten search for "Highland dance of the Black Cocks in Blair Atholl, Scotland" on the Tube.

  • @TheArdRigh It's obvious that you need to get some real problems if you are "offended" by something like this! Pathetic!

  • Firstly it is clear that your cut and paste mentality, negates any kind of reasoned argument as you have completely missed the point, do you even live here, or a even a Scot or Scottish? ...that said, can you explain why a small girl is dancing over swords, doing what can only be described as a curious sport ?

  • @TheArdRigh ...I think you should learn more about our culture rather than labelling us as violent barbarians. Our history goes back further than many other countries in the West and as such most Scots are fiercely proud of it. Yes we have many traditions that people from other nations may not understand or appreciate but that doesn't mean you can label our country dances as 'curious sport', every single dance has a meaning behind it, perhaps you should broaden your mind and learn about them.

  • @TheArdRigh Perhaps you would like to do more research before throwing out ignorant comments like that...

"Clansman would cross their swords and dance around them in the same way. In addition to being a test of skill and agility, it was believed that if they could complete the dance without touching the swords, it was a good omen that they would be victorious in the coming battle. However to touch or displace the swords was a bad omen and was indicative of losses or even defeat." Cont.

  • @raksnishi That's great you have a BA in dance! This would definitely be something to add to your repertoire. However, I don't know where you might learn it as it was a demonstration that I saw in Scotland last summer. Possibly if you could travel there you could take some courses. :)

  • I have a bachelors in dance and am SO impressed. Wow for scottish dance. where can i take a class?

  • @raksnishi It depends what country you live in but maybe look it up on google. There's sure to be a local one in your town. Highland dance schools are ALWAYS looking out for new dancers. I do highland dance and its the best decision ive ever made. Join up and you wont regret it! :)

  • That quick time was insanely fast! XD I don't think it would be possible to do it with the spring points to that.

  • Just watching this is giving me an epic calf cramp.

  • I know! I was very impressed and a little scared for her, even though she obviously has done this quite a bit. It does make me wonder how many times she's been nicked by the swords while practicing. Maybe that's why she wears the high socks. :)

  • @mrscronk12404 i used to do that dance since i was like 9 years old and the swords are blunt swords its pretty impssible to cut yourself on them

  • ......awesome.

  • Wow that is amazing! xD i doubt i could rember the entire thing let alone preform it...Awesome display indeed!!
