@CrownVictoria45 To really understand this scene, you must understand how people ate back then. There were no such tables, in fact, they reclined on the floor, typcially leaning on one arm as they ate with their feet out behind them. The tables, or mats, were very close to the ground if not touching it.
This is exactly why Mary is portrayed to be so astounded by the tall table... it makes no sense, and clearly only a 'rich man' would have such a device.

Clarification: The Torah, along with the rest of the Old Testament, was written in Hebrew. The commonly spoken language in the first century at the time of Jesus was Aramaic, though Hebrew was still used in the synagogues and in liturgical settings among the Jews. However, the New Testament, generally speaking, was entirely written in Greek, though Jesus most likely spoke Aramaic. The Latin Bible came later and was translated out of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. This of course is mere summary. Yay
@comgigi93 actually the Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew and the New Testament was originally written in Greek. Then translated into Latin then English :)
@comgigi93 Why the heck do you think the Bible was written in Latin? The Bible was written in hebrew and greek. That's why the Old Testament is also called "The Hebrew Scriptures" and the New Testament is also known as "The Greek Scriptures". Even the roman soldiers used to speak greek in Asia.
@comgigi93 Actually, the Old testament was written in Hebrew, then translated into Greek after Alexander the Great's conquests hellenized much of the (then) known world. The New Testament was originally written in Greek because that was the language the Gospel would be best brought to people, considering it was the lingua franca of its time. The Bible was later was translated into Latin (called the Vulgate), but it was only known by the clergy and nobility. Common people could not speak/read it.
@comgigi93 that's not true, the bible was written is several different languages, hebrew, greek, some bits in armaic. But the full thing was Not written in latin.
@comgigi93 Err, actually the New Testament was originally written in Greek because it was the Lingua Franca at the time, not Latin. Moreover, the Old Testament that would have been used by the earliest Christians would have been the Septuagint, also written in Greek, for the same reason.
@npaki786 The Koran is in Arabic, the Torah is in Hebrew but the Bible is in 456 languages, and there are about 1300 languages translations in progress...
This film is a MASTER PIECE! and a proof Mel Gibson is the Goya of this century...Esta pelicula es un OBRA MAESTRA! y la prueba de que Mel Gibson es el Goya de nuestros tiempos.
Mel Gibson may not be a perfect guy, but who is perfect?...I mean, if he was able to come up with this beautiful scene...it says something nice about him, doesn't it?
@leopoldvs Not necessarily, not saying he isn't, but the Bible does say how God uses the foolish for His purpose. The Holy Spirit came upon me when I was 14 and used me to witness to others when I wasn't saved, God can use anyone He wants to accomplish His Will.
@ChildOfGod389 Interesting argument but God -as any other artist- indeed needs tools to create a master piece and such tools must be in good shape in order to be used properly. If God is going to use one of us, the chosen one must have something good inside or at least the potential to be good, like what happened with Paul de Tarse. Thank you for sharing though.
@leopoldvs Well that's a nice view, but I do believe that God will use the wicked, because the Bible says that there is no GOOD in us to begin with, unless you have the Holy Spirit within you of course, which is God Himself leading and transforming you. So that comment is untrue, there is none good, not one. Jesus said that. And Saul Himself was a murderer of Jesus' disciples, so was there any good in him? No. He was chosen by God for GOD'S work instead, God will take anyone for His work, but He
@leopoldvs transforms, molds and equips them to be used effectively. "And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments." (Matthew 19:17) ~ I certainly had no good in me when God used me to speak to others, I was into goth at the time and had no spiritual knowledge of God at all, but the Holy Spirit came upon me. So to say I had "good" in me at the time is going against the WOG. He use who He wants.
@ChildOfGod389 You say that the Bible says "There is no good in us" which is sad, because I always thought Jesus gave his life in order to clean us from every guilt inherited before (I'm talking about the 2nd Covenant)
@leopoldvs Well you're gona have to take that up with Daddy, because that's what Jesus said Himself. No one is good because we are all born into sin and we STILL sin. We are only made righteous through faith, grace, and affiliation with Christ. He is like our ticket lol.
@ChildOfGod389 My Theology Professor told me once: "Before Jesus, everyone was born guilty, after Jesus (after his Sacrifice) everyone is born innocent...what people do after with their lifes is up to them (Free Will Principle)"...The point is that Mr. Gibson made a beautiful tribute to Jesus with this film and also touched so many lifes with it. Thank you :)
@Ladiesman1447 Or entirely contradictorial on behalf of his detractors, meaning Hollywood's jewish producers and directors who have started an unfair campaign to destry his image...I love Mel Gibson and I support his career. And as Robert Downey Jr. said: "Let him fu#$% work!"
What unfair campaign? He hates Jews, he's a racist, and you're no better for defending him simply because you like his movies. You're like the people who say "forgive pollock, sure he raped an underage girl, but his movies are great!". It's pathetic.
@Ladiesman1447 Just stop behaving like the Pharisees...What's next? For you to tear apart your vestments?...People like you need a Scapegoat in which you can focus your own frustrations, failures and sins. I say people like you love to see the straw in the neighbour's eye instead of seeing the beam in your own eyes. Stop judging, stop dogging and hunting Gibson down; remember, you guys are not perfect. There is real dangerous people on the streets right now who you should be focusing on.
Amazing, so instead of the racist person needing the scapegoat on which to focus their frustrations, failures and sins, you've actually turned it around on people who don't like racists... Truly amazing how you've twisted that so much.
I think you're using Jesus to excuse his crimes because that's what you want to do in the first place. You like his movies, so you want to like him, but he's a racist, but Jesus says love your enemy, and since you 'want' to do that in the first place, this is very easy for you not a difficult task at all.
If Mel truly feels sorry for what he's done, I will accept that. If God can only forgive people if they repent, why should we be held to a higher standard?
Now you're just being facetious, Mel has a problem with alcohol, rage issues and he's a racist, he clearly needs help so don't attack me for pointing that out because you like his movies, learn to differentiate between the two.
:) I really warm to this scene. He's just chillin, you know, just making a table (which, by the way is beautiful!). It makes Him so real to me, so relatable. I love His expressions and the interaction with His mother. Nawww I love the affection!!! But hey, I love Jesus in general :D :D :D ♥ ♥
Yup :) Now if his mom said stop it Jesus and he didn't stop then that is another story all together. Obey your father and your mother. And that comes with a promise from God, that you will live a long life. :P
@acat543 Ok unless you were alive 2000 years ago than your opinion means less than shit.

Remember Act 4:12 Neither is there Salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be Saved.
Meaning we cannot touch what the Father ordained as the ONLY name of Salvation.
There is no such thing as a translation of what the Father has provided.
Jesus was not and is not the saviors name. The true name of salvation which came from Gabriel to Miriam under the Fathers direction is

If Mel truly feels sorry for what he's done, I will accept that. If God can only forgive people if they repent, why should we be held to a higher standard?

@911TVify
Now you're just being facetious, Mel has a problem with alcohol, rage issues and he's a racist, he clearly needs help so don't attack me for pointing that out because you like his movies, learn to differentiate between the two.

He's the Son of God, but he still gives the table the old "If it bares my weight it works" test. Lol. Nicely done.

@NedOS1013
Yup :) Now if his mom said stop it Jesus and he didn't stop then that is another story all together. Obey your father and your mother. And that comes with a promise from God, that you will live a long life. :P
