who cares if her performance wasnt the best, you must admit the she has a unique voice on her album, she is original, she wrote all her songs, nigga you lay down a 15 song track, obviously if you take the instruments it would sound like shit, any song would,at least she had the creative process to put a new genre together that your little ass brain cant create, stop talking shit, when you should appreciate a good artist,In this generation all we get getting is a bunch of radioplay songsthat are annoying
I think that people like the relief of her walk all over me attitude because it goes against this generation's strong proud attitude, esp for a woman. I'm not sure that it's clever but it's interesting.
I do like her music and I like to look into it, I kinda know what you mean though. But I do like some of her songs that have no strings and epic percussion
One of the songs DIET MOUNTAIN DEW actually have two versions the album version is enhanced and sped up while the original has less beat and more slower
The lyrics on the album aren't necessarily a message. More of a style e.g. 60s wives of gangsters(?), who are oppressed/submissive. And I think it's intentional, which is why I like them.
Her style is doing nothing to much, reduced of all of unnecessary gestures and movements. In her not trying to be amusing, which is much more interesting than fake expressivity, I see beauty. Jooles performance was in visual and in many different ways in ahead of its time.
I love it because it's so sad but intruiging, but at the same time, I think it can get too sad and there needs to be a happy song atleast so I dont get depressed
That was a fantastic review! As a woman, I found you captured her confused, botched portrayal of a "bad girl" perfectly. My first exposure to LDR was with SNL where chuckled with schadenfreude while my ears puked. But then I started listening to her other tracks and was seduced by the Born to Die video- which was great and epic. So now I'm a sorta fan. You're spot on - I wish the music was as perfect as the image.
I still haven't listened to the whole album yet and I'm kinda afraid of doing so, because since the first previews, I felt it was going to be a little disappointing. I listened to about 7 tracks and apart from Video Games, Blue Jeans and Born To Die, the others sounded a little "meh". I did listen to her album as Lizzy Grant and it is actually pretty good (had some folk stuff going on hehe), though it's not a mindblowing thing =P
Do you think it's legal for you to play samples from the track you review in the background while you talk? Maybe fairly quietly, just so we can kind of hear it while you talk? because normally I watch your reviews then immediately go try to find some samples from the album, maybe we could kill two birds with one stone. you could even pause the review to point out interesting parts? idk just an idea.
Spot on. I'm genuinely surprised people latched onto Video Games, I found it to be dull, dreary and monotonous. Everything else I've heard wasn't much chop either; the title track sounds tailor made for the end credits of a summer blockbuster. One seriously overrated album.
i think you are spot on. you gee her credit where due in a non offensive way, and just nailed the flaws. great job dude, i absolutely love your videos.
Wow, you spent at least the first 4 minutes talking about her life, image and record deals. I thought that this was supposed to be an album review, not a review of rumours. Bad show.
Carmen was my favorite track besides Video games and Born to Die. The intro is absolutely beautiful and the story was interesting; I have to agree with most of your points about the album as a whole. It would have been for the best if the album was released a little later with better direction.
I knew you'd give this album a low rating. I'm just not buying into all the harsh reviews on the album. I loved most of the songs, and I thought her style was really creative. Oh well, I don't care if I'm alone in liking her stuff.....GO LANA!
The reason why I don't like this review is because it's pretty much saying that Lana Del Rey is all image and no substance. This album has a HUGE Lolita theme to it(For example: The song Off to the Races directly quotes Lolita by Nabokov) and if you can mix classic literature and modern day music it should be recognized.
If you don't know about Lolita it would suggest reading it because it's really good.
This album is great, i hope this girl will have the success she deserve ...the best songs are national anthem because of the lyrics and million dollar man cause i love that kind of 007 sound
@evhjen I just don't think you listened to the whole review maybe? (bit harsh there @MsUnifa :p). He did acknowledge the hype about Lana in terms of a lot of people hating on her and also towards the end mentioned that the songs ARE in fact catchy. I do agree sometimes he loses creditability when he starts becoming harsh on albums he doesn't like however :') but everyone's got their opinion I guess :p
If you think these string arrangements are epic, you are not mistaken. However, it's been done with trip-hop elements before. Check out Sia's "Breath Me" from 2004. Those string arrangements kill.
I count myself as sonically seduced by Lana Del Rey. I don't care how many co-writers she had, all I know is I love the album and especially those 3 instant classic songs "Video Games", "Blue Jeans", "Born to Die".
why is there so much hype? why do people love her music? id really love to know exactly why because all i can hear is another pop star who sounds very flat and lazy and the lyrics are kinda lame, i find there is nothing particularly special or unique about her
Dude is such a cynical bastard. She has great live performances. The one on SNL was pretty bad, but she is still new and I can imagine how nervous she was knowing that she was going to perform live in front of millions.
"Sonic seduction"! That's the perfect concept for "Born To Die". It's not the best album out there, that's for sure, but it certainly achieves an 8 out of 10. That's high class pop music.
this album was like a 9/10 considering I prefer the demo versions of diet mtn dew and lolita better. And I also think this is what makes us girls demo should have been a bonus track cause the album version is just as good.
Honestly, I like her voice, don't know shit about the albums themes, but the fact is is that I find this album tragically boring. Nothing will change that.
I dunno. Listening to the songs on this album, I'm not convinced that she's at all serious about what she's singing. Kind of reminiscent of the winking, purposefully trashy nature of T. Rex's songs (which are awesome). Does that make any sense to anyone else?
studio version of her songs are overproduced for being catchy, but live this girl demonstrate not being a great singer.it's a pity. great lyrics, great sound, bad vocals
@antimattermind What are you basing it on? SNL? or people talking about her being a bad singer on SNL and you running with the common trend?
I thought she was fine on SNL, certainly not perfect but not the worst on SNL of all time by any means. She's done better elsewhere if you look for it. I think people confusing "I don't like this" and "this is bad" a lot personally.
@antimattermind i'm basing on my opinion, i like lyrics and some songs but i saw many songs live and listening to the album, it lets me down. her voice seems so flat like a basic commercial pop singer, i have great expectation about her, maybe because of this i'm disappointed about her live versions
i agree with this review, mostly because when i have listened to songs off this album i get a feeling that lana doesn't know what her lyrics are about so the songs sound kind of dumb
6/10 at least. you didn't go deeply on off the races or blue jeans and on mountain dew there is no way that it is sounding like rapping at all, ever listen to a singer in the 1940s sing? that's how the tone was back then. i agree carmen is her best though on the album. otherwise it was the hype that killed this album. Hypebeast and alot of blogs were on her like crazy. That's what annoyed people. Hipster this hipster that politics mannn never involved in the art. forget the image, look at music
You should really check out the band First Aid Kit, and make a review of their latest album from 2012. It's a very good pop/folk album with beautiful harmonies from the two girls in the band.
I think this is a pretty fair review (though I think the rating is too low...) I actually really liked the album but I can see how you found it boring. The repetitiveness and "shallowness" didn't bother me that much personally, but I do wish she'd done a few songs with lyrics like she had in Elvis and Pawn Shop Blues, and I agree she could've focused a little more on the Nancy Sinatra vibe.
Ehh, I listened to your review before I listened to the album and I think you were really wrong on this one. The songs are insanely catchy. 4 of my roommates were humming different songs off the album at dinner. 3 is too harsh, you lost some credibility with me on this one. Especially since it seems the trend right now is to hate on Lana.
@evhjen So what ? Just because It's "the trend" to hate Lana he should like her ? Why? Because it's too mainstream to hate her ? It's his opinion man, deal with it.
@evhjen Is it entirely possible that he didn't like the album because it wasn't good? Maybe he wasn't going with the flow... He gave my fifth favourite album of 2011 a 0. I didn't freak out. Neither should you.
@darthkrueger Or he doesn't like it... because he doesn't like it...
Someone not liking something =/= not good
Someone liking something =/= good
Doesn't even matter if something is good. If you enjoy it, that's all that matters. If you don't? Meh, move on to the next album/song and/or artist.
Generally speaking, if people didn't act like them not liking something = not good, then we'd be better off. Then, it's a lot easier to respect their opposing opinion.
@elvickRULES Is it some sort of rule that once a day on the internet I have to see one person freak out over semantics? It's a shitty rule, to be sure.
I can always depend on theneedledrop to completely miss the point of every album he reviews. 'Born To Die' is an ode to youth, a story of the dwindling suburbia of America, and, at it's core, a vision of the death of the American Dream, and the reluctant journey to adulthood each of us inevitably embarks on.
@graytoxxin I've been listening to it none stop for the past month. I got to meet her on the street here in SF. She's an absolute sweetheart and came across as totally genuine. Also got to see her perform at Amoeba, she was amazing.
@DeviantReviews My statement made no claim about the overall quality of the album. I'm merely pointing out that this reviewer has failed to grasp the fundamental purpose of this album. YES, I think the record is brilliant. YES, I love every track on it. But you assumed I did, simply on the premise that I suggested the album had a theme.
@graytoxxin yeahh..but you seemed like you were insulting his credibility for judging the quality of the album when saying "you can always depend on theneedledrop for missing the point of every album he reviews."
@evhjen Catchy does not translate to good. Some artists I absolutely hate have gotten their songs stuck in my head; it doesn't mean I like them. Also, Anthony gave his opinion and was able to back it up, so how does he lose credibility? Because he doesn't agree with you?
I think it's fairly good. 'Radio' and 'Summertime Sadness' are sweet but the rest is really just OK. Still think you were overly harsh but it's horses for courses.
@InuvikPhil Yes. Neither of which she can pull off. Because she's not a singer. She's not an actress. She's not any kind of artist. She's just a girl with a very rich daddy. People are just looking for talent where there is none.
@DivineGrief Of course you do. You're susceptible to advertising techniques because you're not smart enough to see through them. It's okay, someone has to be of average intelligence.
And, also, I feel your interpretation of the album is kind of askew, too. You're seeing it from a male perspective and looking more at these "bad girl" themes when in the grander scheme her music is about honoring love, even after it's lost. It takes a bigger person to say you'll love someone forever, even after the relationship is over, than to get "revenge", which is more cliche (i.e. Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats"). Love is an obsession and she beautifully illustrates that.
I really don't understand what people mean by saying the sound got repetitive. It's the style of music and it's consistent throughout the entire album, just like a pop star's songs rely entirely on repetitive beats and choruses. Her performance on SNL was strange and lacked "charisma" but you can't expect much from an artist that isn't, well, charismatic or lavish. She's an awkward person and it isn't going to change just because she gets on stage. I, personally, think her music is beautiful.
really was not that bad. idk i could accept the fact that this was all a performance, so i think that allowed me to dig it. it wasn't great, but it wasn't a 3 imo
I actually love the album. I understand how people expect her to be a revolutionary, trying to escape the confines of conventional pop music. I think it did for me in a way that the music was different from what I was listening to. I think as someone who took the time to find out more about her, controversy aside, look up her older music, and in general just learned to see how she functioned as a public figure were satisfied with this album.
@snooperdoggy I also think people want to constantly define music, in the same way they expect artists to constantly break those defined boundaries. And when something comes out like Born to Die, people end up wanting more. By the way, what is your opinion of her older work?
I actually really love this album. Carmen and Born to Die are the best songs in the album, but aside from so many critics the album is good. The first album that doesnt make me wanna puke.
the tune is alright, but I agree with this video that some of the lyrics from the album makes me cringe really hard. Lines like "lets go get high" and "play your video game" is out of place, and seems superimposed. It's like she thought that she needs to include a few of that in there to show her "personality", but it doesn't work at all. Also, she can't really sing the songs live, which really skewed my perception of the album because it doesn't really represent her talent.
I knew nothing about Lana Del Rey before I listened to the album in it's entirety - so my opinion isn't skewed by expectations or personal opinions on her as a person/performer/product of the music industry, it's based on her as a recording artist - I LOVED this album. I think her vocals are unique and there's not really anything else like this being released at the moment. I definitely agree that Carmen is the best track. I think people tend to be harsher on female musicians. I don't know why.
Also anthony I've been thinking about this and I think the reason that people were furious wiht Lana Del Rey being manufactured is because part of her thing was that she was this unknown who released a song that a lot of people enjoyed and she made it big.
When it turns out that she just used industry connections to get ahead people who work in a genre based around working your ass off to succeed are going to get understandably pissed.
@lovewithanapparition doesn't it seem harder to convince people though? that takes alot of work too. The Social theory is in order to make it in this world. Is you can't work alone, You always need to know people and connections. Teamwork. Even if it is dirty. Truth is harsh but except it or you will parish. You can do anything right or wrong
Wow. I haven't spoken with my inner-feminist in a while, so thanks for reuniting us :) I really don't understand why girls like me find songs like Lana's "empowering." I still enjoyed her album (I don't know why. Sometimes there isn't a reason) but I definitely see now that her messages are kinda...shit.
She kinda of killed her image when she was on SNL.. it was sad. she sounds better to me when your just listening to the track...Her music video on Vevo is really interesting, and she does fine it that.. But live she falls flat. She may just be the kind of artist whose tracks are better than her performances.. there are artists like that out there and we can love them or hate them. But part of being a musician and a popular one is performance. She's just not that good live in my opinion.
The album has it's moments, but the marketing team or her PR took her in a wrong direction. If Lana hooked up with a hip hop producer she will come through with a steller album. Other than that this album is okay 7/10
i liked the album alot..lolita is my favorite song on it...i like that most of the songs have hip hop beats yet she's singing on it...i think its something fresh...its way more original than singing on dubstep tracks like lady gaga, chris brown, beyonce, rihanna, LMFAO etc etc are doing
as for the actual music.. I didn't think any of the songs were that good except for maybe national anthem.. but there is an awesome clams casino remix of born to die if you haven't heard it :)
for what you said about lana trying to portray a "bad" woman, I completely agree.. her definition of a bad girl is maybe the cliche of it, but in a time where underage drinking, dressing skankily is the norm, her and her message isn't really "bad" at all. Personally I think a girl being bad is a girl free from the norms, and a girl that isn't desperate and tries to seduce her video game playing bf.. rather it would be a girl with men lining up and her proudly pursuing them if she chooses!
I think that Born To Die, Video Games, Carmen, Radio and Million Dollar Man are all very good. But I do feel somewhat sad it wasn't as epic as I expected. I disagree about the track Off To The Races as I quite enjoyed the quirky vocal but found National Anthem very annoying and hard to get through. I would like a instrumental version of Carmen because the music is great, especially the intro strings which later make another appearance. Nice review buddy, its the 1st i have seen of yours.
I kept wondering about whether or not you would review this - thanks for doing so. IMO this album gets pretty boring after National Anthem, and I feel like she should have just released those first 6 songs as an EP. That way, she could have spent more time crafting a better LP for a later release, but I feel like all the hype kind of forced her to put something out sooner. Overall, this was a big disappointment, as I was expecting the songs to be as beautiful as Video Games...oh well.
Yes, she is no Amy Winehouse and thank god. I love Winehouse but she was a "bad girl" to a deadly degree and do we really want another example of that on the radio? Is it not enough for Lana to be a bad girl in a different way? Lana pulls from adolescent experiences and emotions so her story on the track "this is what makes us girls", about before she was sent to a boarding school is her being bad as a teenage girl. It's nostalgic as a young female adult and I appreciate that it isn't extreme
@skeezerzz yeah animal collective did, but that was over two years ago...and in the video he said he did the review after awhile after the album was released, not when everyone was hyped about it....
p.s. I think her voice is hunting and different. We don't see this kind of old school anymore and she is making a modern twist. I am bored and annoyed of the Gag-ga cult following. I'm tired of all this pop crap and auto-tuned. I think her awkwardness is cute. Also she has really crazy stage fright.
I love it. This album is herself in love. Later comes the heart breaking, when you realize men suck. I think today people don't appreciate love anymore. And I feel she is putting up front what today girls are becoming. Like she saying this is what girls are made of...but why...aren't we questioning about it. Why are today girls acting like that! and like she says, it is all about hope when love is lost.
@theneedledrop I think you looked at this the wrong way and looked back at the wrong artist. Times are changing mann you gotta start looking at things different, not by the retroe way.
You can only listen to this album 3 or 4 times before it gets repetitive. I feel like its the same song over and over. Some of the songs even have the same exact sounds throughout them. And tbh it's VERY odd how her old persona completely disappeared. Can you say sold soul?
She's melodically solid but she seems to stagnate in classic-hollywood bad girl obsessed string-tinged pop ballads. The overwhelming theme, ironically, that seems to run through the LP is vulnerability and the post-high school desperation of an attention loving depression case. But I think there's authentic talent here -- there really are some brilliant moments ("Video Games"; "Blue Jeans"). But the album becomes bogged down by length, unchanging tempo and mood, and forced lyrics.
who cares if her performance wasnt the best, you must admit the she has a unique voice on her album, she is original, she wrote all her songs, nigga you lay down a 15 song track, obviously if you take the instruments it would sound like shit, any song would,at least she had the creative process to put a new genre together that your little ass brain cant create, stop talking shit, when you should appreciate a good artist,In this generation all we get getting is a bunch of radioplay songsthat are annoying

i agree with this review, mostly because when i have listened to songs off this album i get a feeling that lana doesn't know what her lyrics are about so the songs sound kind of dumb
jabbalofsky 2 weeks ago
6/10 at least. you didn't go deeply on off the races or blue jeans and on mountain dew there is no way that it is sounding like rapping at all, ever listen to a singer in the 1940s sing? that's how the tone was back then. i agree carmen is her best though on the album. otherwise it was the hype that killed this album. Hypebeast and alot of blogs were on her like crazy. That's what annoyed people. Hipster this hipster that politics mannn never involved in the art. forget the image, look at music

ThulianPink 2 weeks ago
Ehh, I listened to your review before I listened to the album and I think you were really wrong on this one. The songs are insanely catchy. 4 of my roommates were humming different songs off the album at dinner. 3 is too harsh, you lost some credibility with me on this one. Especially since it seems the trend right now is to hate on Lana.

jokersoulja 2 weeks ago
@evhjen Is it entirely possible that he didn't like the album because it wasn't good? Maybe he wasn't going with the flow... He gave my fifth favourite album of 2011 a 0. I didn't freak out. Neither should you.
darthkrueger 2 weeks ago
@darthkrueger Or he doesn't like it... because he doesn't like it...
Someone not liking something =/= not good
Someone liking something =/= good
Doesn't even matter if something is good. If you enjoy it, that's all that matters. If you don't? Meh, move on to the next album/song and/or artist.
Generally speaking, if people didn't act like them not liking something = not good, then we'd be better off. Then, it's a lot easier to respect their opposing opinion.

@DeviantReviews My statement made no claim about the overall quality of the album. I'm merely pointing out that this reviewer has failed to grasp the fundamental purpose of this album. @evhjen Catchy does not translate to good. Some artists I absolutely hate have gotten their songs stuck in my head; it doesn't mean I like them. Also, Anthony gave his opinion and was able to back it up, so how does he lose credibility? Because he doesn't agree with you?

@InuvikPhil Yes. Neither of which she can pull off. Because she's not a singer. She's not an actress. She's not any kind of artist. She's just a girl with a very rich daddy. People are just looking for talent where there is none.

DivineGrief 3 weeks ago
I really don't understand what people mean by saying the sound got repetitive. It's the style of music and it's consistent throughout the entire album, just like a pop star's songs rely entirely on repetitive beats and choruses. Her performance on SNL was strange and lacked "charisma" but you can't expect much from an artist that isn't, well, charismatic or lavish. She's an awkward person and it isn't going to change just because she gets on stage. I, personally, think her music is beautiful.

By the way, what is your opinion of her older work?

the tune is alright, but I agree with this video that some of the lyrics from the album makes me cringe really hard.

RoryMadigan 3 weeks ago 2
This seems exactly right.

She's just not that good live in my opinion.

for what you said about lana trying to portray a "bad" woman, I completely agree.. her definition of a bad girl is maybe the cliche of it, but in a time where underage drinking, dressing skankily is the norm, her and her message isn't really "bad" at all. Personally I think a girl being bad is a girl free from the norms, and a girl that isn't desperate and tries to seduce her video game playing bf.. rather it would be a girl with men lining up and her proudly pursuing them if she chooses!
ricepea16 3 weeks ago in playlist More videos from theneedledrop

Why are today girls acting like that! and like she says, it is all about hope when love is lost.
